Maybe this pic and reference on wikipedia I found will help everyone just get a good look and the sheer size that Godzilla is.

Transamerica pyramid on the left, 345 California Center in the middle and 555 California Street on the right.

Also, here is another link in the forum to a discussion on his height with some good info.
1. Gojira 1954
2. Terror of MechaGodzilla
3. Return of Godzilla 1985
4. Godzilla 2000
5. Godzilla Tokyo SOS
I do agree on feeding on nuclear energy. But as we saw with Godzilla vs Destroyah, in some cases this has an ultimate downside effect.
Will his back spikes also light up ??

I was watching the trailer again andI believe that building is the 555 California Street building which stands at 779 ft. tall. It almost appears as if Godzilla's head is approaching a level height of that building. As a member stated it somewhat looked like he was getting back up from recovering froma bombing.
Am I the only one who thinks Wantanabe's character is in a very primitive-looking Hazmat suit? I think he'll play a young (20-25) Serizawa who is aware of everything (Godzilla, MUTO(orginization and monsters in 1954))etc. They'll do some Inception makeup, make him look 80-90 during present day and he watches as this destruction ensues. Or he could be a modern day Serizawa. I remember them saying they had specific filters on the 1954 shots and there were none that were obvious in the trailer.
Hello GMAN2887 - first of all, thank you for this great exchange back and forth. Let me also say I'm happy to have found this site.
If I said the campiness is what originally made these films popular - I mis-typed. That is not what I meant to say. I will try to be a bit more specific without boring you (and others) to death.
I personally think the original Godzilla movies were directed toward a more mature audience - adults - and yes, they were popular but I think Godzilla became more widely popular when he became more (I hate this word but it works) campy - because then he appealed to children and the "save the planet" theme was able to reach a much wider audience not just adults. When I was a kid, I liked the "fun" Godzilla and I understood the message.
It was only after I became older, I could appreciate "Godzilla, King of the Monsters," with Raymond Burr - and this has become my favorite.
Sure the adult fan base was already there - but to continue into future generations they had to find a way to reach a wider age based audience and I think the "campiness" was intentional. Then you had adults as well as children in not just Japan, but around the world who loved Godzilla and the monsters of Monster Island protecting the earth and it's people.
I hope that made more sense. If not, blame it on Nyquil. :)
While I agree that the campiness is far from a bad thing (not the poor dubbing, however, but I never watch these movies dubbed anymore) I don't agree it's what initially drew audiences in. Perhaps it depends on the audience and at what point in time they were introduced to Godzilla.
But I believe the initial response was delight and, in some sense, pride, that drew Japanese audiences to Godzilla. The original film proved many things, one of which was that the Japanese film industry could produce large scale special effects movies. As the 60s came in, Godzilla had spawned a wide array of special effects movies and, more importantly, a style that was unique to Japan. By then the campy charm had definitely set in, but I have a hard time buying it was the original draw.
Hum... I've been thinking about this very question since watching Pacific Rim.
I'm torn. I feel like this would be a match up that one side would have to win - and one side would have to lose. Why? Because both Godzilla and the Jaegers are tough in their own right each with their own strength and of course their own weaknesses but I am sure fans of each movie "creation" would want their side to win (of course). I don't think fans of either side would be happy with a draw which would set up both franchises for trouble and I want to see both continue here in the USA.
I have no doubt the match would make for one spectacular movie though!! I may be for it, if it was clear from the get go this was a team up -- somehow. Both on the same side in the fight to save the world. That would be epic too.
Well, that was as clear as mud......
i like it blue, when i was a little kid, after watching a godzilla movie i would run around screaming: BLUE FIRE!!! his ray being blue also alludes to his nuclear nature.
If you're familiar with the bay area, you can see a nuke going off in the Oakland hills. Zoom in on the paratrooper who's head is next to a bright light. The fourth one from the top who doesn't look like a dot. Also, why is the golden gate bridge in the wrong place? Honestly, if this is the same artist who did the aircraft carrier poster with the carrier's island is one the left instead the right (like every carrier ever made) I think he's retarded. They probably just gave him a few keywords like san francisco, nuclear destruction, paratroopers and then slaped him/her on the ass and told him to go do it.
No amount of food would realistically be enough to sustain a creature of that size, let alone one as active as Godzilla, especially not one that fires an energy beam from its mouth. Fortunately for Godzilla, though, he doesn't need to eat, because his body is a living nuclear reactor, which gives him all the energy he needs (although he does seem to need to feed on nuclear power plants in some incarnations).
ELI JOVES, that is exactly how i feel about, i'm just kinda 50/50 you know
Interesting question. My guess is that he mostly feeds on any form of nuclear energy. Given his physiology, he does have the tools for being a predator as well. Taking that into consideration, he could potentially hunt down on large marine mammals and fish. Not like dolphin or grouper sizes (they are big though). I'm thinking more along the sizes of blue whales, humpbacks, finbacks, whale sharks, basking sharks, and any other bus-sized marine animal. But I feel nuclear energy is more efficient; it lasts longer and has more resources.
I actually don't mind it too much. To me, it actually seems like Edwards is focusing more towards how the original Goji was made; homing in on the symbol of mankind's destruction. Sure, the original '54 movie aimed towards destruction of the Atom bomb drops and Hydrogen bomb tests in the Pacific, but maybe this Godzilla can be used for (I hate to use this for an example) the destruction of the environment. That's most likely not the case for this film, and I bet I'm wrong on that. It's just a thought though.
Knowing Edwards' quality of using symbols in film, especially in MONSTERS, I have no doubt that he'll do an excellent job using Godzilla as metaphor in any cetain type of way.
My point is to look at this movie from more of a symbolic standpoint, rather than an action-adventure one. That might be the problem here; people are hoping for a classic monster-on-monster fighting flick, rather than realizing what the original was supposed to be about.
HOLY CRAP! THE DOCTOR IS BACK!
A beautful, well made trailer. Bravo Mr. Edwards. You made me shed man-tears. I love the HALO drop idea. A megadisaster engulfs a city. Nobody knows whats going on. All our high tech not working. Only way to know is to put boots on the ground. Insert specops from altitude. Watch through their eyes as the situation reveals itself. BAM! Godzilla... I wouldn't blame them if they forgot to pull their chutes.
I agree that Godzilla should be 1000 feet but I don't think so because Gareth already said he didn't want him too big because he didn't want him to be to noticeable but it Godzilla king of the monster! destroying everything in his path.
It took some time to figure it out, but I do like it. The first part could be a bit longer but it does have all the elements that make it recognizable. Can't wait not only to hear it, but feel it in a theater. Oh man... it's gonna be uber awesome!
I honestly don't know how to respond to this. I am both totally for, as well as against the idea. Yes, because I absolutely enjoyed Pacific Rim and a huge Goji fan no doubt about it. Yet, no because I just don't know how the writers would pull off such a plot. They would have to pick sides as to whether to have the Jaegers/humans win, or Godzilla. I guess I just have to see how Gareth Edwards pulls off this movie. See what the writers have done in this movie. If it turns out to be pretty good, I'll reconsider my thoughts on this crossover idea.
I've done (some) of the math and at 1:12 you see a buildingf wich is 700+ feet tall and messing with number & such (just trust me on this) i came up with this graph

Honestly, I wouldn't mind seeing some classing monsters make cameo appearances. But if this is to be a new series setting aside all it's predecessors of the showa, heisei, and millenium periods, a new monster would be a treat.
I think they should do it because of the numerous fans. If this crossover, they better bring Megalon as one of the pacific rim creatures since he represents seatopia.
Well they changed the colour of the atomic breath too blue not white here,s what i mean
http://www.godzilla-movies.com/news/1227
so yea Edwards Atomic breath will be blue
Honestly, in the trailer, Godzilla looks MUCH more massive than I thought he was gonna be. Gareth said that this Godzilla will be the tallest one yet. I figure he would be about 400ft..but he looks much bigger than that. We will not know for sure until later in time. However, I am loving the size! That scene with the paratroopers free-falling and getting a tease at Godzilla was actualy haunting. Which is a great thing!
i wantz to getz a newz monsterz
I like this discussion, but 1000 ft? Take a look at the Twin Towers:

They are 1,328 ft tall, which would mean he would be 85% of the height of the Twin Towers! That would be Titan Size! That would be absoulutely awesome, but I am a bit skeptical about it. I posted comment about something like this in another discussion, that he would be, from the look of the trailer, 750-850 ft tall. It would be cool if he was 1000 ft. I hope you are right about size though. Godzilla + Titan size = More Destruction and awesome!
Well blue and white is traditional atomic breath color. The reason they suggest white because of two reason.
1. The original Gojira was black and white and when godzilla atomic breath was a white mists.
2. Because realistic when you get cold everyone breath condense into white condense vapor. So if Gareth said that he going to make the breath more believable, of course they would come to this conclusions.
I'd on the other hand want the blue and white atomic breath, yet if is realistic atomic breath I want it to be a match fire color. Something along the line like this:

i think that from the footige it looks like kamonga the giant spider id quite like to see him as a main monster that godzilla has to fight but if it was a new monster then id like to see some sort of dragon (not king gidorah) it would only have one head and it would have to have armes and wings
I wouldn't be for a crossover either. For the exact reasons you stated. Also just from a fan perspective I wouldn't care for it. I did see Pacific Rim but it has a tone I would not want Edwards' take on Godzilla to get tangled with. Pacific Rim had great effects but that's about it. With the exception of one or two scenes PR just wasn't my cup of tea. What Edwards and Legendary appear to be doing with Godzilla are much more up my alley. Just my opinion.
This is my own vision of what might be in the next godzilla trailer.

That would be the most likely to be in the next trailer.
The trailer was in a word...Awesome! It did what a trailer is supposed to do. Tease the audience , keep the mystery and create interest. Well it did that in spades. I noticed that the tiny flare falling past Godzilla's head though distant, was falling fast. I think the highest that a chute can open safely depending on the body mass of the person falling once reaching terminal velocity is a min of 1000 ft. These soldiers are still falling past Godzilla and have not deployed thier chutes. If that is the case than Godzilla's height at minimum 1000ft. Anything above that and he is looking eye to eye with the current world's super skyscrapers and that is just fine with me.
I think the troopers were dropped to assess the bomb damage.
I don't think he was nuked. A very large powerfull Bomb short of a Nuke could create a very large crater. I think the dust cloud Godzilla is covered in is from a very powerful Bomb(s) strike. The British used Tall Boy Bombs which were 5 ton giants that were dropped on Battleship Tirpitz . Some landed close and caused extensive damage others hit the ship and essentially destroyed it. That was in WW2. Imagine what they would use short of a Nuke. If they did Nuke Godzilla they would't send in a team so soon afterward. The radiation and the nuclear fall out would render the site inaccessible. If your low on military resources your not going to risk what you have left if the objective is not clear.
Building-Smashing Fun!
personally, i don't thinck its moabs, if there was really a godzilla, the millitary would be pretty desperate and therfore would be more likely to use nukes.
Do it, I dare you, F*cking do it.
