Apple TV has greatly expanded the monsterverse so far with it's prequel series 'Monarch'. This show has managed to create an amazing backstory to the Titan organization known as Monarch, and how it has affected the Monsterverse behind the scenes. A second season is already being scheduled for February 27th.
In the meantime, Apple TV has greenlit yet another spinoff prequel, this time following Colonal Lee Shaw in 1984. Wyatt Russell will be reprising his role in this new series. Apple TV has released a synopsis which is as follows:
Starring and executive produced by Russell, the spinoff series will follow the story of Colonel Lee Shaw, an American operative who, in 1984, went on a secret mission behind enemy lines in an attempt to stop the Soviets from unleashing a horrific new Titan big enough to destroy the U.S. and turn the tide of the Cold War:
This seems extremely exciting, as we are now getting into exploring more of the backstory of Shaw's work with Monarch which has only been shown in flashbacks in the main show thus far. It remains to be seen what this new Titan is, although I personally hope it will be an original Titan like the Ion Dragon in the main Monarch show.
This show marks a renewed confidence in expanding the monsterverse brand. Maybe it will even lead to new spinoff shows in the future if this is successful. Interestingly, it has been announced by Apple that Joby Harold is slated to be the showrunner.
From Apple TV : " Emmy Award-nominated screenwriter and producer Joby Harold has been tapped to showrun. Under a newly announced overall deal with Legendary, Harold will also oversee Legendary’s entire Monsterverse franchise for Apple TV, featuring both new and fan-favorite Titans."
Now whether this means we could get a Godzilla cameo again in this new spinoff, it's hard to say. What do you think of this new spinoff news? Are you excited?
