About the Godzilla Minus One sequel - Minus Zero

After his film Godzilla Minus One broke numerous records for Toho and performed very well at the international box office, Takashi Yamazaki was tapped once again to direct the next Godzilla film! His plans are to continue the story from where Minus One left off. The sequel will also feature more monsters - not just Godzilla!

On Godzilla Day 2025 (November 3rd), Toho officially announced the title for the Minus One sequel would be Minus Zero and unveiled the film's official title logo, as well as official website.

Official Plot Synopsis

Godzilla Minus Zero picks up in 1949, two years after the tumultuous events of Godzilla Minus One, and continues the story of the Shikishima family as they face an all-new calamity.

Story Details

Footage shown at CinemaCon 2026 has revealed that in Godzilla Minus Zero, America's nuclear testing prompts Gojira to return, but this time the King of Monsters is much larger and more menacing than before. In the sequel, Godzilla also makes landfall on American soil, attacking New York City. The film takes place in the year 1949 – 2 years after the events of Minus One.

Returning Characters

So far, we know Ryunosuke Kamiki and Minami Hamabe will be reprising their roles. Yuki Yamada is also expected to reprise his role as Shiro Mizushima, along with Hidetaka Yoshioka as Kenji Noda and Munetaka Aoki as Sosaku Tachibana.

Production Updates

November, 2024 it was announced that Takashi Yamazaki would direct another Godzilla movie for Toho.
February, 2025 it was first announced that a sequel to Godzilla Minus One was officially in development - and this time, with a much bigger budget!
April, 2025 Toho announce big plans for future Godzilla films - the Minus One sequel being one (of many) new Godzilla movies in the pipeline at Toho.
June, 2025 it was discovered the Godzilla Minus One sequel would begin filming August 2025.
As of August 30th, 2025 filming has officially begun on the Godzilla Minus One sequel!
November 3rd, 2025 - Godzilla Day - Toho unveil the official title and website for the Minus One sequel - officially calling the picture Godzilla Minus Zero
November 3rd, 2025 - It was revealed Minus Zero would be filming outside of Japan - shooting scenes in New Zealand and Norway. Prior to this, the last Toho Godzilla film to shoot outside of Japan was Godzilla Final Wars.
January 9th, 2026 it was finally announced that Minus Zero would hit theaters in North America on November 6th, 2026 and November 3rd in Japan.

Godzilla's New Design

UPDATE April 2026: Footage from CinemaCon has revealed Godzilla is much larger in Minus Zero, with larger dorsal plates and improved scale armor. He is also rumored to have doubled in size, clocking in at nearly 100 meters tall or larger!

During the film, Godzilla will go through an evolution – the teaser showcased Godzilla pre-evolved approaching New York:

Before the new design had been revealed, a teaser for the new 70th anniversary Godzilla ride attraction (which was also directed and produced by Takashi Yamazaki) featured a revised design of his Minus One Gojira - with altered dorsal plates, slightly changed facial features and a new green atomic ray. This is not necessarily an indicator of what the new Godzilla will look like - but it certainly could be close.
