New Mike Dougherty interview hints at return of a classic Godzilla villain!

Director Mike Dougherty has been quoted in a new interview with Japanese website Cinema Today potentially teasing the return of a very iconic Godzilla villain.

During the interview, Dougherty touches on a few interesting aspects regarding the Monsters in King of the Monsters - going on to say that they are not just monsters and that each one has an individual opinion of Mankind. Each has a unique history and a unique connection to various ancient Human civilizations. Read on for a few excerpts translated from Japanese:

In past films, Mothra is presented as a guardian god, and was worshiped by little twin fairies and humans, which symbolizes that mankind and monsters can coexist. Understanding the monster, there were once existing civilizations living next to each other, but we may have forgotten it. Through this work, I thought to convey that.

Dougherty also teases that Mothra may convince Godzilla and Rodan to attach Ghidorah, like in the 1964 original:

As such for Micheal Dougherty, the monster is not just a monster. "In the original former Godzilla series, there is a wonderful scene in which Mothra encourages both Godzilla and Rodan to fight King Ghidorah, and the small twin fairies translate that exchange (From 'Ghidorah The Three Headed Monster' 1964). Looking at it, the monsters exhibit individuality and intelligence, each one having different viewpoints and ideas about the human race. Even in my movies, the monsters that just seem to bark actually have emotions, thoughts, and feelings. I wanted to tell as much I could, as I continued to tell the crew that they're not just monsters, but living creatures with character.

Next up, the interview touched on the infamous Oxygen Destroyer... referencing that the Oxygen Destroyer is NOT a mere cameo, but will play an integral part of the film's plot:

During filming of the movie, Micheal Dougherty had shared on Twitter an image of the fictional scientific weapon, The Oxygen Destroyer, which first appeared in the original 1954 Godzilla film 'GOJIRA'. Dougherty, admits that the weapon which became the deciding factor in destroying the original Godzilla by destroying all oxygen within its surroundings, appears within the film, "It appears as an important key item to the story, this is not a cameo", he confirms, "Of course there will also be other weapons created by humanity that will be shown."

Fans have been quick to point out that this might be a hint at the introduction of Destoryah - who in the original Toho films was created from the Oxygen Destroyer. There have been plenty of rumors suggesting Destroyah would be introduced, but this new interview certainly makes it seem like Destroyah will be the end result after the Oxygen Destroyer is used... This also makes us wonder if Godzilla and Kong will team up to take on Destroyah in the next film. what do you think? Sound off in the comments!

Special thanks to Gormaru Island for the translation. You can read the interview for yourself here!

Like I've said before... KK v G will be like a B v S scenario. If Destroyer becomes a player in this monsterverse… then in all likelihood KK will team up with G to fight and kill Destroyer. Of coarse this is only speculation... and there is another villain to challenge Godzilla... Megalon. He would fit right into this monsterverse perfectly given the arc of the whole hollow earth thing... and a battle with him would prove to be a big challenge for Godzilla. There's no jet Jaguar... but Kong would fill those shoes quite nicely in my opinion. Since Megalon was worshipped as a god... in the original film... then it would make sense to put him in this monsterverse.

I'm sure a Hollywood modern day version of him would work... and probably look awesome.

If TOHO... gave the rights to do Megalon… they are not going to spoil it by saying yeah... we did.

My other hunch about a possible villain... would have to be Biollantte. For some reason... these two make sense. Biollante is by far a more terrifying presence on the screen and a modern day take on it would probably look incredible scary... which I'm good with. But my money's on Megalon.

Destroyah is the Doomsday we need Godzilla and Kong to team up and fight. I hope Ghidorah turns good and is around to help or at least escaped to outer space with all three heads. No Titan can match Destroyah in evilness. Destroyah is Godzilla's devil and one monster that could get the Dragon and the monkey to join forces. I am however very concerned for my Reptilian heros in the fact that oxygen destroyer confirmed means they could give Godzilla a weakness and it it best not hurt him or that will be upsetting. Trailer looks like oxygen destroyer will send him back to his lair for a nap where Scientists wake him and empower our Lord with a nuke. I can deal with that.

I'm glad that Dougherty is acknowledging that the Kaiju have personalities. They aren't one dimensional beings. The monsters always have personalities. Godzilla has always had feelings. I'm glad the director included that. I really can't wait for this movie.

You know, everyone else is jumping on the Destoroyah hype train, but I'm not so sure this is the case here.

I think we're being a bit premature with this one. Sure, the idea is nice, but I haven't seen anything that would really cater to the idea yet, just hints and teases that are vague enough to mean almost anything.

Yeah, I hate to say so Chris but this is one of the most deceptively click-baiting things I've seen posted. I would be all for the return of Destroyah, but nothing quoted here explicitly hints at anything more than the device itself being utilized in a meaningful way. Let's not let enthusiasm cloud perceptions until we see something a little more solid.

Initially the Oxygen Destroyer was thought to have been a mere cameo earlier on in production. The fact that Dougherty is bringing attention to it and confirming it will not be a mere cameo device makes us wonder if it will lead to the creation of Destroyah - because we know it won't kill Godzilla in this film, since he'll be coming back for Godzilla vs. Kong.

Not to mention we've heard murmurs that there is some legitimacy to this possibility. But instead of jumping the gun, I'm simply postulating for now.

That's all fair man, but the article title is still misleading since there's nothing factual about the content directly supporting the claim.  Just cautioning against inaccuracy, postulating is fine but reading between the lines and making articles with strong claims that aren't supported by more solid evidence is less so.

Fair argument, I thought "hints at" would suffice for insinuating the information is still unknown, though.

The possibility remains however! I for one am hopeful Toho granted rights to Destroyah for use in GvK. They almost need another big bad player in the next film. Kong just doesn't have the same presence as Ghidorah for being Godzilla's final opponent.

We already have four main monsters (I’m sure other Titans are just cameos for the military or Godzilla to immediately kill), you can’t just shove in another one halfway through the film. I just want the oxygen destroyer, not Destoroyah.

I think we all need to remember that this is part of a bigger universe. Even if Destoryah will appear in the Monsterverse, he doesn't need to appear in KOTM or GvK. Maybe Destroyah is teased for Godzilla 3 or a phase 2 finale movie or any other movie in the Monsterverse.

When Thanos first appeared in the first Avengers movie, he wouldn't be the main villain for another 6 years and 13 movies (including Avengers 2 and Civil war). I think Destroyah might be the Monsterverse equivalent of Thanos.

In other words, I am not worried at all that GvK will become another BvS where there will appear a random villain for the 2 heroes to team up.

Along with Biollante, Destroyah was a memorable original monster from the Heisei era. How it's look will be interpreted in the Monsterverse is going to be interesting. I know there have been fan paintings showing what they think Destroyah could look like, but what do you think a new Destroyah should look?

I have 3 questions.

1:)If the the Titans of Greek mythology took the form of Kaiju like Godzilla or something,What would they look like?

2:)Same question but with Gods from Warhammer Fantasy.

and 3:) What would some of the cultures/mythologies could be connected by Kaiju from Toho? (For those of read Rage across time)
