Bagan is finally making an appearance in Japanese theaters later this month in a Mothra vs. Bagan prologue feature as part of a special Godziban event!
Bagan's theatrical debut is a significant one since the Monster was originally going to debut back in the 1990s opposite Mothra in a sequel to Godzilla vs. Biollante, but Toho unfortunately canceled the project after Godzilla vs. Biollante failed to meet box office expectations. Although at the time Toho wanted to resurrect hype for their other iconic Kaiju, Mothra - they had doubts Mothra would grab enough attention and perform well enough at the box office being the title Monster of the film. Godzilla had vastly more appeal and profitability. As a result, Writer / Director Kazuki Omori who would have brought Mothra and Bagan to the big screen was forced to switch gears and instead propose the script for Mothra vs. Godzilla.
After nearly 30 years, Bagan is finally being realized - to the appeasement of many Toho / Kaiju fans!
You can learn more about the unmade, original Mosura vs. Bagan film over on Toho Kingdom, where they provide a breakdown of the film's intended plot synopsis as well as notes about its conception and history.
