Earlier today Screencrush announced that Godzilla 2 would be directed by its recently announced writer, Michael Dougherty. While the report isn't that far fetched, given he's directed two films for Legendary Pictures, (Trick 'r Treat [2007], Krampus [2015]) we held off on passing it along until some other sources could confirm the report.
As it turns out Screencrush has since updated their original article claiming that Dougherty is merely "in talks" for the director's chair. Helming the project will likely depend on how Legendary reacts to his screenplay.
Additionally, Gomaru Island did some digging and found reliable movie insiders checking into the story. Film reporter Umberto Gonzalez claimed he was given, "hard denials" about the report on Twitter. He continued to assert that Legendary isn't even concerned with picking a director yet:
Until we know more, there are still no directors attached to Godzilla 2 at this time. It is possible Dougherty could direct, given his track record with Legendary--But until they decide what needs to be done with his and Shields' script, the job for director is still up in the air.
Check back for more information on Godzilla 2 as it comes.
