No, Michael Dougherty is Not Directing Godzilla 2... Yet, Anyway...

Earlier today Screencrush announced that Godzilla 2 would be directed by its recently announced writer, Michael Dougherty. While the report isn't that far fetched, given he's directed two films for Legendary Pictures, (Trick 'r Treat [2007], Krampus [2015]) we held off on passing it along until some other sources could confirm the report.

As it turns out Screencrush has since updated their original article claiming that Dougherty is merely "in talks" for the director's chair. Helming the project will likely depend on how Legendary reacts to his screenplay.

Additionally, Gomaru Island did some digging and found reliable movie insiders checking into the story. Film reporter Umberto Gonzalez claimed he was given, "hard denials" about the report on Twitter. He continued to assert that Legendary isn't even concerned with picking a director yet:

Until we know more, there are still no directors attached to Godzilla 2 at this time. It is possible Dougherty could direct, given his track record with Legendary--But until they decide what needs to be done with his and Shields' script, the job for director is still up in the air.

Check back for more information on Godzilla 2 as it comes.

Man i hope this lack of directors won't make this movie scrapped.

They're probably waiting to see how Kong Skull Island does before they really commit.

Very unlikely this movie will be scrapped. They just hired 2 new writers plus they will be filming in China in that new mega studio Wanda just built. I always thought that we will hear about a new director when the hype of Kong SI dies down.

No cast, no director, just announcing the script writers and they didn't commit to really big names for that either.

If Kong fails that's a BIG red flag towards future Godzilla movies. Not saying it's incredibly likely this films gets scrapped, but it's not unthinkable. A lot rests on Kong for if this cinematic universe Legendary is trying to create goes through.

Coincidentally leaving them enough time to see how Kong does before they really throw their cards in, or pull out.

I wouldn't worry unless Kong flops.

Like I said it's not extremely likely Godzilla 2 gets scrapped, but it is possible

I wouldn't be worried. I think you'll hear about casting news and plot around 6-9 months from now, director too.

I doubt Kong will make as much as Godzilla did, but I doubt that will hinder the development of Godzilla 2. Godzilla has way more marquee value, especially in the east. Godzilla will always be a profitable property, I don't see Legendary dropping it at all.

Ehhhhhh, idk about Godzilla having more marquee than Kong.

At this time he does, this hasn't been true in the past though.

I don't know about being better even now. At best they're even they're both the premier giant monsters.

That may be true, but Godzilla '14 did well; and there is a lot of hype growing about Kong: SI. I think this universe is in good shape right now.
