Godzilla 3 To Be the Rematch with King Kong?

Godzilla 3 To Be the Rematch with King Kong?

According to trustworthy entertainment news outlets Deadline and Variety, Godzilla's rematch with King Kong may be in our future.

There's been a lot of rumblings from quotes taken out-of-context that Godzilla might cross over with Pacific Rim, but much of that seems to be fan spurred hype with cherry picked articles from over a year ago.

Deadline reported today that Legendary will bridge Kong from Universal to Warner Brothers in a film that would take place after Gareth Edwards' Godzilla 2, to be released June 8th, 2018. Could this be the plan for Godzilla 3? And how is this working exactly? The report mentions that Producer Thomas Tull is bringing Kong: Skull Island to Warner Brothers in order to unite future monster projects. The question is how and why?

It's unlikely that Universal would simply hand the project over to Warner Brothers, so we have to assume that if this is happening they're getting something fairly significant out of it. And what of Toho? Supposedly deals are being quickly worked out with Godzilla's owner right now. It's unlikely they will turn down the project since they've been eyeing this money-making rematch for years. Deadline reports Kong's character rights are in public domain.

For now, Kong: Skull Island is set for a March 10th, 2017 release under Universal. Legendary Pictures has declined to commit on the information.

Crossing movie universes is a big thing in Hollywood, but with so many studios attached to Godzilla and Kong how likely is all of this? Has a deal really been met with Universal, Legendary, Warner Brothers and even Toho to make this happen? And if so are you excited for what could very well be the match of the century? If it's true, eat your heart out Batman v. Superman.

Godzilla and King Kong last met in 1962's salaryman satire, King Kong vs. Godzilla, directed by the legendary Ishiro Honda.

High Flyers,
Universal never got Godzilla. The deal Toho has in place is with Warner Brothers and Legendary. Godzilla 2 was always going back to Warner Bros. For Universal to be involved means things would have to be renegociated with Toho.

But now that Warner Bros. is getting Skull Island, things have changed. Whether or not Universal is still involved has yet to be determined, but they likely are. As of right now we can only speculate on the inner-workings of why/how this is happening.

True but legendary was still involved with universal and I'm sure ideas were thrown around in the back, I'm not sure if gareth would give this news yet is the question, itake just amazing how close these two are to each other

We could wale up tomorrow and Gareth or someone could officially announce it although unlikely it could easily happen, this could be a great or bad idea but how big these two are, it's gonna make its money and may even pull a Jurassic World and shock everyone! It could break massive records possibly even Jurassic World, I don't see it beating out films like Titanic and Avatar though

Legendary is still involved with Universal, but Universal has no say over the Godzilla property.
Gareth likely has no control over this deal what-so-ever and this cross over no longer concerns solely the Godzilla realm. Jordan Vogt-Roberts, who is directing Skull Island, could just as likely direct. This is Thomas Tull's move. He or someone who represents Legendary will likely make the announcement-- If what's reported is true.

So now warner brothers has the rights to something that could change film history, I'm sure there's been ideas in the back, yes a lot of paperwork is included but im sure these companies would know what to do

Universal worked with Toho for the original King Kong Vs Godzilla then legendary and Warner brothers obviously has the current rights to Godzilla and King Ghidorah and    other big respected names, they have the time to make a deal, it just isn't set in stone yet they have, I feel we might have to wait till Skull Island for the confirmation because if we walked into the theater with a 300 foot gorilla instead of a 25 foot one and possibly even Godzilla on cave drawings, because using Godzilla could explain skull island easily

Ya'll beat me to it, GMAN! XD This is seriously awesome news, and with all the big news sites reporting it, this hardly seems like a fan rumor or wishfull thinking.  I can't wait to see what happens next.

Here's another article from the Hollywood Reporter.

My poor article, it's now an object of ridicule by G-Man.

Gorilla,
Not ridicule, but of use for comparison and contrast. Looking ahead, if this information proves to be untrue it will serve the same purpose as a piece of information to both learn from and keep in the records as a "flavor of the moment." And to be fair, while there's no confirmed plans for a Pacific Rim crossover, no one has denied it either. We've yet to reach the post-Pacific Rim 2 era of the fandom.

Danzilla,
While I have no doubt that the idea is being tossed around, until there is an official announcement this is something that could still fall through. Best to air readers on the side of caution.
I do, however, like how Legendary declined to comment.

It's about time we got a rematch! This a classic that everyone, Godzilla/Kong/monster movie fan or not, will want to see. If they can work it out, it can happen.

I think we'll have to wait till Skull Island and Godzilla 2 hit theaters. With this many companies involved with both characters, there would probably have to be big projections for them to all be able to come to an agreement, if those 2 films knock it out box office wise then this becomes MUCH more likely

Would a rematch even make sense between these two monster. I would love to see it, but when you think about it King Kong is only 25' tall when standing on his hind legs. Godzilla is 350' tall in the new film, so how would you match size. Have Kong fight a baby Godzilla. I am just saying it worked in the 60's but I don't see that working now. Have Kong fight Mecha Kong but not Godzilla, it would be an onslaught.
