According to trustworthy entertainment news outlets Deadline and Variety, Godzilla's rematch with King Kong may be in our future.
There's been a lot of rumblings from quotes taken out-of-context that Godzilla might cross over with Pacific Rim, but much of that seems to be fan spurred hype with cherry picked articles from over a year ago.
Deadline reported today that Legendary will bridge Kong from Universal to Warner Brothers in a film that would take place after Gareth Edwards' Godzilla 2, to be released June 8th, 2018. Could this be the plan for Godzilla 3? And how is this working exactly? The report mentions that Producer Thomas Tull is bringing Kong: Skull Island to Warner Brothers in order to unite future monster projects. The question is how and why?
It's unlikely that Universal would simply hand the project over to Warner Brothers, so we have to assume that if this is happening they're getting something fairly significant out of it. And what of Toho? Supposedly deals are being quickly worked out with Godzilla's owner right now. It's unlikely they will turn down the project since they've been eyeing this money-making rematch for years. Deadline reports Kong's character rights are in public domain.
For now, Kong: Skull Island is set for a March 10th, 2017 release under Universal. Legendary Pictures has declined to commit on the information.
Crossing movie universes is a big thing in Hollywood, but with so many studios attached to Godzilla and Kong how likely is all of this? Has a deal really been met with Universal, Legendary, Warner Brothers and even Toho to make this happen? And if so are you excited for what could very well be the match of the century? If it's true, eat your heart out Batman v. Superman.
Godzilla and King Kong last met in 1962's salaryman satire, King Kong vs. Godzilla, directed by the legendary Ishiro Honda.
