English resources on the Godzilla series tend to be few and far between--Accurate English resources are even harder to come by. Although this isn't the first time a book on Godzilla's (1954) director has been published, it may be the most definitive. Film historians Ed Godziszewski and Steve Ryfle return to give us an in-depth look at the late, great Ishiro Honda.
Both historians have collaborated before on Classic Media's excellent commentary tracks for Godzilla '54, Godzilla Raids Again (1955), Mothra vs. Godzilla (1964), Media Blaster's Destroy All Monsters (1968) and they wrote the documentary Bringing Godzilla Down to Size: The Art of Japanese Special Effects (2008). Godziszewski himself has been handling the publication Japanese Giants for years and Ryfle is known for his book, Japan's Favorite Mon-Star: The Unauthorized Biography of "The Big G". Mr. Godziszewski was also kind enough to give us an exclusive, detailed interview on Godzilla vs. Biollante. (You can read it in full here.)
Roughly since 2011 these two have been working, writing and researching, with help from Ishiro Honda's family, to deliver what undoubtedly will be the most comprehensive English resource on Honda's life and career. According to the book's Facebook page, Ishiro Honda: A Life in Film, from Godzilla to Kurosawa will be published October 3rd, 2017.
The massive undertaking by these two authors is sure to pay off after seven-to-eight years of hard work. This will be a must own resource for both Godzilla fans, kaiju fans and film fanatics interested in Honda's career as a whole. Get ready for Ishiro Honda: A Life in Film, from Godzilla to Kurosawa!
