According to Godzilla: Awakening, he is a reptilian creature from the Permian period. Therefore, he is, at the very least, 250 million years old.
That bad, huh.
Ultrazero,
More mass bannings from people on various forums. Multiple death threats not just to Sony and Toho, but among fans. Y'know. The usual, civilized thing.
I think the hysteria fever pitched around Godzilla 2000.
Huge-Ben- How bad did those years get?
^
To be honest, that insanity seems to be getting worse and worse each year. Although, it's not as bad as 1998-2001. Those were the horrible years.
It's hard for me to break down my favorites by era if I'm considering Godzilla and non-Godzilla kaiju films. So I guess I'd have to make two separate lists: one for Godzilla films, and one for non-Godzilla films.
Godzilla Series
Showa:
3. Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla
2. Invasion of Astro-Monster
1. Mothra vs. Godzilla
Heisei:
3. Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah
2. Godzilla vs. Biollante
1. Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II
Millennium:
3. Godzilla 2000: Millennium
2. Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla
1. GMK
Other
Showa:
3. Latitude Zero
2. War of the Gargantuas
1. Mothra
Heisei:
3. Gamera the Brave
2. Gamera 2: Attack of Legion
1. Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris
Even with two lists, it was hard to narrow my favorite films by era to just three. There are so many great non-Godzilla kaiju films in Toho's Showa library, and every single Heisei Gamera film ranks up with my all-time favorites. I suppose I should at least give an honorable mention to Rebirth of Mothra, which would be my favorite Heisei kaiju film outside of the Gamera or Godzilla series.
Showa:
3. Terror Of Mechagodzilla
2. Godzilla VS Mechagodzilla
1. Godzilla 1954
Heisei (The best era):
3. Godzilla VS Mothra: Battle for Earth
2. Godzilla VS Space Godzilla
1. Godzilla VS King Ghidorah
Millennium:
3. Godzilla 2000
2. Godzilla: Final Wars
1. GMK
I'd say it's pretty likely they fight at some point. While Mothra may be "good" she's fought Godzilla to some extent in 5 different movies( I think may be forgetting 1) I think they may fight at some point in the movie. Godzilla is a protector of earth in this universe, but Mothra could be a protector of people and those 2 don't always mix.
If they do fight I would hope for something similar to Tokyo SOS, or the original Mothra vs Godzilla.
Huge-Ben makes a good point. Although some of you guys think the venom in the fanbase is bad today, I don't think it ever got as ridiculous during 1998-2001--For good reason, yes, but the drama over the Tri-Star movie bled in to the Millennium era. 1998 made every fan skeptical and I still remember the online flame wars about Godzilla 2000 also being a GINO. Yes, people went that insane.
In any case I didn't mean to post that to offend or light the fire of an impassioned debate. Perhaps I'm somewhat sadistic, but I'm almost glad that comment exists purely for the sake of comedy.
Guys, it will be the same thing with Godzilla king of the monsters 2019. There is no end to this kind of stuff. I can't take people seriously when they criticize a Godzilla film like Shin Godzilla but get offended when that same criticism is there for 2014 or other Godzilla films.
If people don't like one film, it is fine. However, criticism is there. Whether it be the cold hearted truth to the film, or some rubbish that makes no sense. The ones that are rubbish like that are there for people to laugh at to be honest.
Personally, I like 2014, but it's not in my top 10. Both 2014 and Shin Godzilla have their flaws, in fact, all Godzilla films have flaws. We all may prefer one over the other, and that's fine. But there's no sense to send death threats, acting like a certain film should be destroyed, or even post things like "Toho fanboys should be cut up and feed them to their families." The most important thing to remember about Godzilla is this. "Godzilla is a registered trademark of Toho company Ltd."
Like kingkaijugojira said, these same idiots are going to end up buying it anyway once it releases because, any self respecting Godzilla will own it as a part of their collection.
I own the 3 disc set, and enjoy it. I own the 2014 film and enjoy it. I don't see anything changing for the next millennium. The fan base will always be divided. No matter how silly the debate and argument is. No matter what type the film itself is. We are all going to have our nitpicks with each film.
Some go on that it's "constructive criticism" when bashing one film like Shin Godzilla. With comments I've seen over the years with each film, it seems that the "constructive criticism" becomes more and more like hate speeches. And when that same "constructive criticism" is exercised on 2014 or other films, people in general get offended by it because chances are, they know it's the truth, and the truth hurts.
^What he said basically.
Mothra and Godzilla wouldn't fight. I think they'd have a mutual respect for each other. I think what will happen in 2019 is that Godzilla will fight Rodan, and then Ghidorah's appearance will cause them to team up and fight him alongside Mothra.
^
Mine was 200,000,000. Although it's a much significantly higher number, I can't help but wonder why not the budget be raised since its featuring Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah, with the inclusion of buildings being destroyed, King Ghidorah's gravity beams, their flights, fighting styles, roads, military weapons, jets, ships, and etc. Those three monsters will definitely require some time to take and invest for them to look good and the rest of the movie itself.
VincentSiddons- 170,000000. I don't know why, but that's the number that pops into my mind.
What do you guys think the budget for this movie is going to be? When do you guys think the trailer ( any kind) is going to be released? Thanks!
^True. But it seemed like a pretty quick deal. Universal put up no fight against it and was reportedly unhappy with the project from the get-go.
^I don't know what their deal is, but I'm sure they're getting their share. They still own the character.
"On the other hand we all may need to be quick about getting the Funimation releases. Apparently every copy of Shin Godzilla on DVD/Blu-ray is going to be destroyed:"
The post you shared along with this says a lot more about the poster than it does about Shin Godzilla.
If people don't care, or even dislike, intensely, a Godzilla film, fine. Don't watch it, don't buy it, point out what you believe to be its faults are. But the comments you shared are indicative of deep, serious mental and emotional issues. I've seen them. For 25 years I worked for the Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Prisons as a chaplain. I've seen and been exposed to serious pathological behavior. Unfortunately, you see some of this on some boards and forums. People, this is a hobby, a pastime of sorts. I can only conclude that the rage expressed by the quoted 'fan' is in response to the spectacular critical and commercial success of Toho's 29th Godzilla film. I remember reading on another board, where someone said that the second trailer for Shin Godzilla, released around July 18th, looked worse that their two year old's vomit. When people talk like this, it is becomes increasingly difficult to take them seriously. Why not, instead, critically, and with lucid and cogent arguments, point out the trailer's weaknesses? Talk about the VFX, the musical cue, or the lack of dialogue. But worse looking than baby vomit? Really? There are entries in the Series that I'm not exactly enamored with, but I've never called for the boycott of their Blu-ray or DVD releases, let alone advocating the cutting up of their fans.
Godzilla fandom, or any fandom, for that matter, is not a zero-sum game. This 'fan' of Godzilla 2014 need not destroy and disparage everything about Shin Godzilla in order to 'build up' the film he likes.
I love both films. I don't see enjoying them both as an 'either/or' proposition.
These are amazing times.
I don't think Godzilla seems very likely to die either thematically or due to studio politics. Kong only seems more likely due to his track record, but then again I have to wonder how many movies Universal is allowing Legendary to use the character for. Clearly they worked out Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla vs. Kong, but beyond that? I wonder if Universal is kicking themselves for not keeping Skull Island so they could get a cut of it.
Well, this would probably change the course of the film. Now we have bounty hunters in Godzilla just like we had a tracker in Kong
^Some people are just idiots getting upset over nothing. They probably are angry by Godzilla's radical new changes in ability that was displayed in Shin Gojira (new forms, the more powerful atomic breath, etc.). They likely don't understand the metaphors to nuclear disaster in the film. They also may be upset that Shin Godzilla got more screen time than G14. They may only be fans of G14 who haven't watched many other Godzilla films. Don't let those idiots get to you anybody. We're all entitled to our own opinions, but those guys are just trolls looking for a fight. Just ignore them. If you like Shin Gojira, great. If not, ok then. Just don't complain about it to everyone and try to make everyone who does like Shin Gojira seem like a bunch of jerks. We are all Godzilla fans and believe me, there are worse was to portray the King.
^could not have said it better.
Both Shin and G'14 are good films in different ways. I have no idea why parts of the fandom are letting these films split them apart.
Godzilla 2014 Himself,
No release date. But like I implied, things are currently in the works over at Funimation.
On the other hand we all may need to be quick about getting the Funimation releases. Apparently every copy of Shin Godzilla on DVD/Blu-ray is going to be destroyed:

^Oh man - that's actually really amazing. I love it!
^No no, you can post it here.
With all these impressive numbers, hopefully, they will work out a deal to get Gamera into the mix, this is the perfect opportunity to get the big 3 in it together.
Since the last Gamera movie did not get the funds needed to make it. Being part of this monsterverse, would give him the renewed popular push it will need to get another Gamera movie.
Bounty hunters is interesting indeed!
But who will they hunt? And what's the bounty prize? If it's Godzilla, they got another thing coming to them! If it's another M.U.T.O., they got another thing coming to them! But if it's a human V.I.P.? Could be an interesting struggle.
This is really interesting. I heavily agree with the bounty hunters going after the shobijin thing as that's what happened in G vs Mothra. It would be dope if a huge battle between militaries is going on then Ghidorah comes out of nowhere and wrecks them.
^
Fair enough. Although Eiji Tsuburaya is the master of monsters in the special effects department, I have to say you'll find out how good the effects are until you watch those films.
^
You really need to watch the heisei Gamera trilogy of the 90's. I honestly put them above many of the Godzilla films. The tokusatsu effects in all 3 films are gorgeous. Especially in Gamera 3 the revenge of Iris. I honestly don't think there will ever be a better tokusatsu effects film.
Ah Gman, there is no quit in either of us is there? ;)
"I know for fact that there is no mention in the script that Godzilla switched from a frozen state to his recharging mode in the script either."
I think you mean you know for "a" fact but that's not why I'm here. Until I see evidence to suggest that, I might take your word for it. Now, if you've talked with Yoko Higuchi who worked on the film then there is no argument there.
"You can't call foul on one thing because of a point you made and then come back and violate your own argument with a new assumption. That's cherry picking."
Again, until you provide evidence to convince me, we don't really know that. So I'm assuming he couldn't have been going to his recharging stage while being frozen? Sounds a bit like cherry picking but, more on that later.
"So Godzilla moved and no one noticed?"
You've already said I made my points and case with the shots I've been referring to. That case is closed.
"Godzilla was considered such a massive threat the UN took control of the situation--But now he's not being monitored?"
I didn't say that. Also, that's cherry picking on your end. The UN was halted by France so that Japan could use the coagulate. Did you forget that?
"Had Godzilla moved at all the countdown would have resumed --This is explained in detail to Yaguchi by the end of the film. The coagulate is not a solution, so when Godzilla likely returns, as will the threat of nuclear detonation. The numbers would have started ticking had he moved."
All of this is correct. And again, I have to bring up the tail tips differences in each shot. Its frozen and not moving. The tail tip at the end, although is NOT moving, is not frozen. The shots themselves prove that. We also don't know if the countdown has restarted or not, but due to the fact it takes "movement" to evolve, you can only consider the fact that maybe he was trying to evolve after being frozen.
"Are we going to talk in circles about these as well?"
If you want to. ;)
^Because you and Huge-Ben are still kind of debating it. I'm not sure what to think.
Going a little outside the Godzilla series here:
1) Eiji Tsuburaya - 'Nuff said.
2) Teruyoshi Nakano - The man deserves credit for how resourceful he was in the 1970s. The SFX directors of the series from 1989-2004 would've been at a complete loss as to how to make it work on those budgets. The MechaGodzilla movies are great examples of this. And explosions. Lots of explosions.
3) Shinji Higuchi - I need to note here that although I enjoy his work in Shin Godzilla, I still find his work in the Gamera trilogy more interesting. Specifically Gamera 3. I'm largely putting him here for those movies.
4) Kiyotaka Taguchi - This is probably the most resourceful man working in tokusatsu today. He really knows how to frame shots correctly in this genre--Always putting something in the foreground. Ultraman X and Ultraman Orb are great examples of this. And his work in Love & Peace is nothing short of incredible.
5) Sadamasa Arikawa - The man filled Tsuburaya's shoes beautifully in Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster and Son of Godzilla. His shots were framed more meticulously than his mentor's and he really pushed the sense of scale with these monsters--Hard to do considering his main two films took place on islands.
Still Saturday in my country but happy Easter xD
YukisSpecial,
I'm glad Mr. Field has such positive memories of him and that Kawakita was passionate. There's no disputing that his work made an impact during the early 1990s as the Heisei series was quite popular at the box office. Even today the designs from that era resonate the most for Japanese fans. But that doesn't necessarily mean Kawakita was a brilliant special effects director.
The late Guy Tucker also met the man and noted the Kawakita became disappointed after the mediocre box office returns for Gun-hed and Godzilla vs. Biollante. (He may have learned to love the Godzilla series, but he was certainly more interested in mecha at the time.) According to Tucker this led to an escalation in drinking--Though he's the only one to write about it. Though it's beleivable considering the downturn in quality.
Drinking or not, the fact of the matter is in 1964 Eiji Tsuburaya had a mere fraction of the budget and time Kawakita had in 1991 - Yet Tsuburaya was still able to create a King Ghidorah where every wing, tail and head was flapping and flailing wildly. Meanwhile, Kawakita phoned in a stiff prop for shots during the aerial dogfight - It was incapable of moving any of its heads or tails.
He was given an even bigger budget for Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla. Yet almost every outer space scene Tsuburaya did in the 1950s and 1960s looks better than the SpaceGodzilla/MOGUERA battle. Even merely looking as good as Tsuburaya's sequences would have been a failure. It was 1994 after all. There were other techniques to try, more time to do it and more money to spend on it. It's pretty inexcusable considering these were some of Japan's most expensive movies in the early 1990s.
Now is that a dig at Kawakita's passion? Not at all. I'm glad he was passionate about it. Tezuka is passionate about Godzilla as well--But said passion doesn't always equate great filmmaking. Kawakita created a successful style, but there were more interesting and genre pushing visuals happening over at Tsuburaya Productions and Daiei during his tenure.
