Godzilla may be the King of the Monsters, but it seems King Kong is king of the Box Office. Official numbers are in and Kong: Skull Island has raked in over $535,205,906 worldwide. Compared to the worldwide take of $529,076,069 Gareth Edwards' 2014 Godzilla accumulated, this puts Kong: Skull Island ahead of Godzilla by a whopping $6,129,837Skull Island also surpassed Godzilla in just 31 days, while Godzilla attained its worldwide gross after a total of 105 days.

Kong: Skull Island had a lot to live up to and it seems as though the film has achieved its goal. Not only do these numbers signify an appreciation for the property, it bodes very well for the cinematic Monsterverse Legendary and Warner Brothers have created.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters (Godzilla 2) begins filming this June in Atlanta and is scheduled to film well into October, 2017, with a release date of March 22nd, 2019.

Godzilla vs. Kong is currently being formulated by a team of writers, with no scheduled production start date announced yet. However the film is slated to hit theaters May 29th, 2020 if all goes well.

Well what'd you expect when Kong has more screen time in the the first 20 minutes than Godzilla had in the entire movie?

Give a big thanks to China everybody X)

Domestically, Godzilla 2014 still has about $50 million more.

However, foreign revenue puts Kong on top.

Remember how Legendary was bought out by Tencent Pictures?

Tada.

@KingKaijuGojira It certainly appears that Legendary learned their lesson. I still have doubts as to whether Kong will beat Godzilla domestically, but this is great news for the Monsterverse!!

To be honest, I loved Godzilla 2014, but I think almost everyone can admit that Skull Island was a FAR better movie.

Oh.. this will not go unchallenged.. Godzilla KOTM.. will have to be bigger.. badder.. more epic than the first. WB KNOWS they cannot afford to have G-KOTM.. fail.. given they want to get these 2 behemoths on the same screen together. I hope they pull out all of the stops with the G sequel.

I heavily believe they will, after all the reason Michael Dougherty was promoted to director is because the script he and Zach Shields wrote was supposedly amazing.

@Kaiju-Man257

If I'm gonna be honest, Godzilla 2014 was a better constructed movie overall. Kong definitely had more action, but that doesn't necessarily mean it was better.

But hey. Film rating doesn't mean squat when talking about box office. Just look at the Bayformers. Hundreds of millions with every release, and they alllllll suck.

I just hope that Michael Dougherty knows to consider the human story as one of the most important aspects to get right for Godzilla 2 to be successful.

With all these impressive numbers, hopefully, they will work out a deal to get Gamera into the mix, this is the perfect opportunity to get the big 3 in it together.

Since the last Gamera movie did not get the funds needed to make it. Being part of this monsterverse, would give him the renewed popular push it will need to get another Gamera movie.
