I'm more interested in what Toho will do these days than I am the MonsterVerse, so I can live with it ending at GvK. However, if more do get made, I hope there's a massive change in the agreement so both studios can go about their productions in their desired time frame.

Judging by the fact they're getting all the big monsters done I think points to an end of the monsterverse after Godzilla vs Kong. I think we'll have to see how they deal with the monsters in 2019, but if say all of them die except Godzilla in that movie to me that's a big tell that they don't plan to go on.

After these 4 movies they'll have used Godzilla, Kong, Ghidorah, Mothra, and Rodan basically the biggest and most marketable giant monsters possible. I don't see them wanting any other toho monsters especially with the big price tag that probably comes with them even if they continue the monsterverse besides maybe MechaG and a baby.

well even if they cant use Godzilla after 2020 in the monsterverse, then perhaps they can try to make a rodan or mothra film. They only need the rights to those 2 monsters. Hell, maybe even a Gamera movie! I would like to see that in the monsterverse. I know im stretching. But why start a movie universe if your only going to have 4 major films?

I imagine Legendary is well aware of how difficult it could be to extend its rights to Godzilla, so it is either planning ahead to renew them already or has already accepted the fact it is going to lose them after 2020. I'm leaning towards the latter, and if that is the case I expect Godzilla vs. Kong is being planned as a capstone and grand finale to the MonsterVerse. Legendary isn't going to use Godzilla vs. Kong primarily as a building block for future films and plan far ahead if there's a good chance they won't have access to Godzilla after 2020.

Personally, I'm hoping that negotiations will have been made by the time Godzilla VS. Kong comes out so that the Monsterverse as it is can continue unhindered.

Maybe allow animation to be the major Japanese avenue of Godzilla films as a sort of compromise. Failing that, perhaps Legendary themselves could "cheat the system" so to speak, by doing animation themselves. More specifically, licensing out to animation companies to produce photorealistic all-CGI films. Thus, not "technically" live-action but looking just as good if not better.

It'd also allow future films to not have the CGI stand out from the live-action filmed scenes if it's all photorealistic CGI. Think like the work that modern Blur Studios does for videogames, but for film instead.

It's not a matter of Toho and Legendary not wanting to get in each others' way, it's the fact that their contract specifically prohibits the studios from each having a live-action Godzilla film in production at the same time. I'm sure Toho wasn't too upset with that arrangement at the time, considering they hadn't produced a new Godzilla film since 2004, which had itself been a box office failure, but now I think things have changed. Shin Godzilla was a huge success, and Toho may believe they could see more profit by producing their own live-action films regularly than they would by distributing Legendary's films. Shinji Higuchi even said that if they knew Legendary's Godzilla sequel would be delayed into 2019, they still would be working on Shin Godzilla. The fact we are seeing the production of the anime trilogy right now is likely Toho exercising a loophole in the contract so they could capitalize on the sudden resurgence in Godzilla's marketability.

If Legendary were to try and extend their ability to use Godzilla, Toho would either put up a much higher asking price or require the stipulation regarding subsequent production of films to be removed. No such stipulation existed during Toho's contract with TriStar as far as I've gathered, though TriStar ended up not producing any more films anyway. I think Toho wants to resume producing their own live-action Godzilla films, and will be willing to cease earning revenue from Legendary's films to do so. Time will tell how this plays out, but as it stands I don't think the arrangement will continue the way it is now.

I hope the franchise continues in The Monsterverse. But I agree with the fact that Lengendary can make monsters cheaper in their own production. So if there is more, they probably wont add more Toho monsters. Maybe Mechagodzilla, or classic monsters from the showa series. I doubt any "newer" monsters from the Heisei or Millennium series will make an appearance like Spacegodzilla, Biollante or Orga.

I can see your points, box office won’t be good enough to save the monsterverse. But the contract with toho can always be extended. You have to remember that toho earns money from these movies too.

I feel like these first 4 movies are kinda a test for the monsterverse. if people want to see more of the monsterverse. Kinda like they did with marvel until the avengers. Until that point the movies where tests for the MCU. I think they are trying to do the same.

If toho and legendary agree with each other that the monsterverse is earning enough money and get reasonable reviews or better, They can always extend their contract for a few more movies.

and before anyone is gonna say that they said that toho can’t produce any live action Godzilla movies before 2020, that can also be easily explained. The first monsterverse movie was Godzilla in 2014, then toho made shin Godzilla in 2016. You see how they don’t want to get in each other’s way. if they would make a shin Godzilla 2, there movie might overshadow king of the monsters and the other way around. When 2020 is over, toho can make shin Godzilla 2 and in 2023 legendary can make Godzilla 3 if they want to.

I always felt Toho and Legendary could potentially work it out where they take turns putting out movies, but that would severely restrict the release window for both studios. It would be like rushing to the finish line for both Hollywood and Japanese produced films.

^ That's what a lot of people seem to overlook. They assume that box office success alone will determine if the MonsterVerse extends past Godzilla vs. Kong. While box office revenue is important for the future of these films, like G-Man said the contract between Toho and Legendary, which also prevents Toho from producing their own live-action Godzilla films, ends in 2020. Everything beyond that is still uncertain. I don't think Toho has any intention of letting their ability to make more films be restricted after that point, so if Legendary did deem it necessary to renegotiate the rights, that stipulation would probably have to be removed. Regardless I think it will be tough for Legendary to extend their rights and Toho will be asking a lot, so it's a question of whether or not Legendary thinks it's worth it.

The point is, there are a lot of factors beyond just box office revenue that could determine whether or not Legendary will be able to use Godzilla after 2020. Legendary would also need to acquire the rights to all the other classic Toho kaiju beyond Godzilla and the big three, which would all likely come at a hefty price with their own set of stipulations. Legendary might not see it worthwhile to purchase the rights to all of these monsters, most of which general audiences are completely unaware of, when they could just as easily create their own.

"I am pretty sure Godzilla vs Kong will do great at the box office, because it’s freaking Godzilla vs freaking King Kong."

It's not just the box office though. The agreement between Legendary and Toho ends in 2020, according to Shinji Higuchi. Whether or not that merely means the particular slate of movies or if Legendary completely loses the rights, is unclear. However, it's likely Legendary will have to renegotiate the rights with Toho if they want to make more--And I know Toho wants to make their own for a change, so we'll see.

Per usual, whenever this question is asked of me I have a difficult time answering due to my distaste for making lists these days. I've narrowed down my top three, but even then I'm not 100% certain what order I'd put them in. So I'll just list them by release:

Monster Zero
Terror of MechaGodzilla
Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack

And following closely behind is probably the 1954 original.

I can definitely see your points with the monsterverse not continuing. I just really hope it does. I am pretty sure Godzilla vs Kong will do great at the box office, because it’s freaking Godzilla vs freaking King Kong. If they just promote it good. I hope that we will at least get a Kong 2 and Godzilla 3.

ebirah is a really popular candidate amongst fans for Kong 2 and I wanted to save gorosaures for Kong 3. The other candidate I had for kong 2 was biolante, but she is way to popular of a Godzilla monster to feature in a Kong movie.

varan was kinda a space filler for phase 3 and I couldn’t think of a other movie that would have made sense in that spot, so I can definitely agree on that.

for the rest it’s great to see you like the rest. I might change it up a little in the future and give it another shot.

if you have any other ideas or changes you would make to this list I would love to hear it.

As much as I would love to see Monsterverse expand and grow. I don't think we will see a Monsterverse after 2020.

I could go into a thousand reasons why it wont last, but that's not the discussion here. However to get this topic going here is what I would like to see in this fictional line up.

If Rodan and Mothra become solo movies, I would like to see them based in the past. Like thousand years past when they would have reigned. Since G:KOTM gives a back story of these monsters already, it would be great to show something in the past already, like something we didn't know from KOTM. Like Rodan ravaging a island tribe or something like that.

Kong Returns - Im not sure Kong fighting Ebirah would sell tickets. I like that you implied it tho. I get it, that was the original story to Ebirah, Horror of the Deep. Not sure if Kong would still be vital after 2020. Even though its far fetched, the only direction that would keep Kong new and fresh would to have Kong fight aliens! That might spark some interest. I know it seems ridiculous.

Godzilla 3 I can see keeping it all alive. It depends on how GVK goes.

Monster Island could be great, I would love to see anything in that.

King Kong - like I said. Aliens.

Varan, not sure how to stir this pot.

All the rest I would pay tickets to in your Phase 3.

SuperZillaRealmsGodzilla ForumWhat Made You a Godzilla Fan?

The main thing that brought me into this series was the movie Terror Of Mechagodzilla, it was the first Godzilla film I have ever saw and I watched it a lot when I young. Along with Terror Of Mechagodzilla I watched Godzilla 2000, Mothra Vs Godzilla, and Godzilla (1998), but sadly the disc got scratched and I haven't ben able to watch it for 11 years. But as luck would have it, when I was finding more Godzilla films I found a copy at my local cinema store and when I watched it again, it brought back the memories as a child and I had the same feeling when I first watched it as a child. It is still my number 1 favourite movie and I have been a Godzilla fan since

damn, its pretty damn clear that the Xillians from Planet X are the HIT! The Mysterians are really cool as well, Moguera is a fun robotic monster.

But I cant tell who is more advanced in terms of technology or planet conquest.

The Mysterians had us on the run but I think far away from taking over planet earth.

The Xillians(1965) came pretty close. They had the 3 strongest monsters on their side. If they hadn't t revealed how they were controlling the monsters I feel like they could have come closer to taking over the earth. BUT we still would have figured out their one vulnerability. All things that give off certain sounds. But in terms of technology they are way more advanced then lets say the Mysterians. They can control animals and can travel near light speed.

The Kilaaks are the closest in the Showa series to take over the earth completely. They possess both the ability to travel through space and can control monsters and human beings! they are close to immortal! can project images like holograms,  can emit energy barriers to protect them from bullets and other contact. they were destroying cities by the hour. Following the same pattern as the Xillians, they controlled the Monsters off of Monster Land(pretty easy since earth bunched them all up together for them), then sent them out to destroy cities without warning.

The Nebulans, boy they wanted to try so bad but could barely get one city fully destroyed. They had very limited resources and needed a human to make all space technology for them. Even tho the Chairman possessed advanced mathematical equations around planetary orbits, they still lacked any ability besides taking on human form to take over any planet. The only thing that gave them anything was Gigan and Ghidorah. That even seems like they were a gift. Gigan might not even be their own creation but the species that inhabited the planet Nebula creation. They just kind of took Gigan over. They have to be the weakest race in my mind in terms of alien tech and conquest. I mean, a comic book artist out smarted them! Nothing against comic book artists but just saying. There wasn't any scientist or secret agent involved in this caper.

The Seatopians, well.... they made an underground sun! Somehow made Megalon their puppet. But cant make robots....??? Not sure what to rank these guys. Giant insect god, but robots are out of the realm of there understanding that they wanted to steal Jet Jaguar. They seem advanced, but seem to be stuck in their own ideology of what technology best suits their societies needs and wants. Made an underground sun but no shirts or armor to cover up with. So go ahead and place them where you want.

The Black Hole aliens have a lot under their belt! Interstellar travel, advanced weaponry and robotics to create the single greatest robot monster in Toho history. They can shape shift into humans and back into apes(it seems to be only under stress, this might be the way they take over other planets. Taking on the form of the species and slowly destroy the civilization). They cant control other monsters though, they needed Dr. Mafune's machine for Titanosaurus. I feel like they never needed this technology because they figured that they can just build a better machine and kill whatever gets in their way.

Yog, well.... not advanced but maybe well evolved. He is a conscience space amoeba. He could take over the world if the space ship landed in a city populated with enough humans he could take over with. But one thing that makes Yog special is that he can make his own monsters out of anything around him. Even though he had slim pickin's for making monsters around that island, I would hate to see what he can do if he landed on Monster Land and take over Godzilla or others there.

Orga is something to think about. He can travel through space, live possibly forever, can produce great energy to decimate cities. Somehow absorb information through the internet almost putting mankind back to the stone age in just a few hours. Can scan lifeforms, take their cells and adapt to the atmosphere. then mutate into a giant monster while still controlling the spaceship. He could be a something more advanced than the other aliens. But that clearly is up for debate.

The 2004 Xillians basically took over Earth. They are the only aliens that actually did what they set out to do. The controlling monsters with the "Mutant Gene", teleportation, shape shifting, super strong and fast. They are basically the old Xillians, but with more fun gadgets and abilities. Even though I don't think there are the most advanced, you have to hand it to them on planetary conquest. Not sure where to put Monster X at with them? Did they make him or take him over? We know they can remodel Gigan, so Im pretty sure they made him. So that is also out there for debate.

What do you guys think?

The King of the MonstersGodzilla ForumFAVORITE TOHO ALIEN RACE

My favorite Toho alien race currently would probably have to be the Mysterians. Not only are they Toho's first alien race, but they're also one of the most iconic and memorable. There's a great deal of development behind them, and they're incredibly unique among Toho's alien races. The audience is actually made to sympathize with them to an extent and there is a clear implication that humanity could be in the same situation if nuclear weapons continue being made. Plus they just look plain cool. Their color really makes them stand out from the other alien races.

From the Godzilla films alone, I'd say my favorite alien races are the original 1965 Xiliens and the Black Hole Planet 3 Aliens.

I think I'm going to have to go with the, "People from Planet X" in their original 1965 debut. Damned if they aren't the most iconic adversaries in the Godzilla franchise. And Yoshio Tsuchiya's portrayal of the Controller has all but solidified him as the series' greatest villain.

But based on the awesome designs and colors alone, it's a close race with the Mysterians. Lets face it, Honda, Sekizawa and Tsuburaya wouldn't have merged Toho's space sci-fi with kaiju fare if it weren't for the debut of those aliens. And I'm still of the mind that they inspired the super sentai costumes.

riggzamortis86Godzilla ForumFAVORITE TOHO ALIEN RACE

I think the Xillians from Planet X set a golden standard for Japanese Sci-Fi alien flicks. Although I think they where kind of sadistic. The whole beginning of the movie you think that they are there to help mankind with the "Cure To All Diseases" along with taking Godzilla and Rodan off our hands. But the whole time they were doing whatever they wanted. They didn't need the earths permission to operate and take Godzilla and Rodan. They could have done it anyway without anyone knowing.

Instead they plant operatives down to earth and one of them to seduce Glenn, then they play off that they need help from Ghidorah, then drag them all the way back to planet x, make the monsters fight anyway(even tho they could have controlled them the whole time). then send them back all the way in a brand new space ship. Then mock earth and threaten our existence with the tape supposedly holding the Super Drug that was supposed to help mankind(why didn't the astronauts ask how to make the wonder drug while on planet x is beyond me. what if we had questions?). Then destroy the space ship they made for the earth anyway! Then after the warning of response to their demands, they attacked 2 hours early than they warned us about!

They are probably the most evil out of the Toho aliens. Or the most clueless. They also told earth how they were controlling the monsters with super sonic waves. Pretty clumsy if you ask me. They had it all in the bag up to that slip up. But I get the message behind Honda's tragic alien story. They do not love, mankind can not be controlled by machines that whole drama. But all in all The Xillians stand out in my mind to be the best aliens in Godzilla fandom. They are a stand alone favorite for many.
