Monarch VFX Supervisor contemplates bringing Ebirah to the Monsterverse in season 3!

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters has just concluded its second season, introducing both new and familiar Titans to the series. While Co'cai (Titan X) was the main focus of this season, the show's finale teased the return of a fan favorite – Rodan! The show did a great job of balancing classic Kaiju with unique new additions to the Monsterverse. With season 2 ending on such a profoundly exciting cliffhanger, the inevitable questions arise – what other new monsters will feature in Legacy of Monsters Season 3?

VFX Supervisor for Monarch, Sean Konrad recently sat down with Den of Geek to discuss this very question. Sean, who also worked on Gareth Edwards' Godzilla (2014), mentioned that while there's plenty of popular Godzilla monsters to choose from, it's the more challenging designs which offer the most appeal – Ebirah being the one he chose to name specifically!

With the reveal of Rodan at the conclusion of the finale, it’s clear that Monarch isn’t done bringing some of its biggest monsters to the small screen.

“I always question whether or not I should answer those kinds of things,” Konrad laughs when asked if there’s a particular creature or kaiju he’d be most excited to bring into this universe. “It’s just so tricky because you’re like… just by saying something, does that suddenly lead the audience to [assume that’s happening]? But I worked on Godzilla 2014, and bringing Godzilla into the world in this way was really exciting. There’s always a million other creatures from the canon that I think are really interesting. I love all my children equally… But I always wonder about how you could update, like, Ebirah, which a lot of people hate as a design. I’m always curious about the ones that would be really hard to do.”

This is by no means any indication that Ebirah will be joining the Monsterverse, but it does offer some insight to the creative minds behind the show and where their focus is at moving forward. Thst being said, Ebirah would actually fit perfectly in the Monsterverse and could could easily be given a greater backstory than the brief one Toho gave it.

Who is Ebirah?

Ebirah is a giant crustacean Kaiju introduced by Toho, resembling an enormous lobster with a hardened red exoskeleton, massive claws, and a formidable presence in the ocean. First appearing in Ebirah, Horror of the Deep (1966), the creature is known for its strength, durability, and ability to thrive in both deep-sea and coastal environments. Ebirah primarily relies on its powerful pincers for combat, using them to crush opponents and hurl debris, making it a dangerous adversary even for larger monsters like Godzilla.
