We can get a size range idea by looking at the skyscrapers in San Francisco (the place that's to be 'visited' by Godzilla).
The smallest skyscraper is 400', the tallest is 853'. According to Edwards, Godzilla is to be big enough to be spotted, but not to big so that he/she can hide.
So our Godzilla is bigger than 400' and smaller than 853', compare that to the tallest Japanese Godzilla/Gojira at 328'!

There is no way to know how tall the Mutos have been exactly. The Muto in the first leaked teaser was slightly wider than a large two story house (to the best of my recollection), but still would only have been about two hundred feet in length, give or take a few meters.
The Muto at the airport in the second teaser (which was never leaked) was never described in detail so we don't know how big it's going to be.
So far Godzilla's height has been the subject of continued debate and speculation abounds, but no facts exist yet save for it's going to be the "biggest Godzilla ever."
Another fact is that Gareth never mentioned the comics, so there's no way to know if the 150 meter Godzilla from the older comics is even being considered. If it is, then Godzilla will be over 492 feet tall. If not, then he'll likely be shorter than that.
All we know for sure is his height is over 100 meters, but that could mean 101 meters or 10,000 meters. We don't know yet.
Until there is some solid proof of his height in relation to a structure or specific building that we all know and can measure, his height remains unknown.

I've been trying to figure this out for myself as well. Godzilla could easily be 500' or bigger to (according to those that had scene the 2013 SDCC trailer) dwarf the 'massive' Muto.
Until we see something to be a size comparison next to Godzilla (as an official image or trailer) I don't think we will know its true size.

Error #1: The tank could easily have been oversized to allow readers to actually tell what they were.
Error #2: From the first panel alone, the look and style of the plane tells us its NOT a small personal plane but one of the very large passenger planes like the 747.
I will admit that the building and the various panels do show an inconsistent size for Godzilla, other than that its more massive that the Muto.
Remember, all who had seen this trailer for real reported the Muto was more massive than a human. 23' tall would be theropod dino sized, which is big but not "MASSIVE". They also reported the Muto was dwarfed by Godzilla.

^I highly doubt the movie will be that in depth. I also think it doesn't matter because Godzilla's a fictional character that can never exist no matter which way you rationalize it.
ReplyKyeroGodzilla 2014 ForumKaijuGroupie84 has done it again :)! Another Godzilla Trailer Comic!Nov 8, 2013
The problems with your size theory are quite profound my friend.
Problem Number One: The size of the Muto
If you looked more closely at the picture and compared the Muto to the size of the tanks nearby firing at Godzilla in the second to last image, most good sized tanks are only about 10' tall. The Muto is about two to three times the size of the tanks, making it only about 25' - 35' tall at best.
You're off by a minimum factor of ten in your estimate of its height.
Problem Numer Two: The airplane.
The airplane in the picture cannot be confirmed as a 747 by any standard given how small it is, especially when it is compared (again) to the tanks nearby. Either this artist has no idea of the concept of proper scale, or they meant for the Muto to be tiny.
Problem Number Three: The airport building.
It's only four stories tall when you look at it in the last image, and the Muto doesn't even reach the top of it. A four story building is about 40' tall, giving further discredit to your estimate of its height.
Problem Number Four: Godzilla himself.
Again, this artist is good but he doesn't look like he has a solid grasp of scale yet.
If that building is in fact four stories tall and 40', Godzilla is only about three to four times the size of it. Godzilla would then therefore only be about 120' - 160' tall according to this little comic strip. We all know perfectly well that this Godzilla is going to be "the tallest Godzilla ever" according to Gareth Edwards, so this comic is unreliable for size estimations.
Again, you need to examine with a critical eye and remember that this is NOT OFFICIAL! It says so in the description given by the author that it's not official, yet you seem to think that it makes perfect sense to base an estimate of Godzilla's size off of it… Why? I don't want to call you stupid, but there's really no better word for it.
It's a nice piece of artwork, but as an unofficial sketch intended for entertainment only this is not something you can base estimations or theories of the actual movie on.
Think.
It's not illegal yet.

Personally,a Godzilla that actually needs to breath is kind of ridiculous. A creature that size would never be able to get enough air in his system to power his lungs, regardless of whether or not it was through gills or the nasal cavities, which is why I always refer people to this article which clears things up:
angelfire.com/ego/g_saga/kaijubiologyarticle.html
Also, considering the size of the creatures we've seen so far,I think it's safe to assume that one variant will have a swarm-based mentality and have the numbers to back it up,whilst the other will probably rival Godzilla in terms of nuclear-reconstructed mass.

@SpartanWarrior
Do you even know how tall those are? Those heights are so tall it's stupid. 800 feet would make Godzilla well over 200 meters tall and 40,000,000 feet is over 12 million meters tall. The final layer of the Earth's atmosphere is only 580,000 meters from the ground. So you can understand better, that means if Godzilla was 40,000,000 feet tall, over half of his body would be in outer space.
@Kyero
I don't have an issue with the gills one way or another, but the fact and speculation about them needs to be switched. We have a head shot that looks like Godzilla has gills. Fans have therefore speculated that he will indeed have gills. But there has been no official comment, documentation or press release from Legendary, the cast or crew to conclude that theory as fact. So until then Godzilla having gills is only speculation.

Might I say you did SUPERB with this comic! I give it an A++ :)
I can imagine it would be tricky to capture Godzilla\'s size from that scene, so some size scaling is to be expected.... but yes it does give that \"I am about to NUKE you\" feeling ;)
Still, based on this io9 article of that trailer ( http://io9.com/we-saw-a-glimpse-of-godzilla-you-wont-believe-the-siz-851082801 ), your size depiction of just the Muto feels close.
To dwarf a Muto that big, it would need to be pretty darn big (I can see the Final Wars Gojira being frightened about facing our Godzilla in a new American-vs-Japanese Godzilla fight ;) )

Replykaijugroupie84Godzilla ForumHedorah V.S. Destroyah. Who would win?Nov 7, 2013
Well, I would think that Destoroyah would win in that fight only for the fact that he has more damaging attributes compared to Hedorah. One of them being the plasma horn which could slice through Hedorah as it did to Godzilla and the Micro-Oxygen spray would be very damaging. I mean sure Hedorah has the capability of flying, vaporous gases and an eye laser, but I think the Destoroyah would give him a run for his money.

Overall I agree with your Facts vs Speculations, it\'s good to have someone make sure to \"get the facts straight\".
My theories on the monsters I try to base on as much fact as possible. To that end...
1: The fan-made images of the Muto (for example) could be used as a source material to give one an idea for the monster... as long as the creator of said image had seen or talked to those that had actually seen the Muto in the 2013 SDCC trailer.
Fact: The Licencse Expo leaked 2014 Godzilla head and neck is the official look (for those areas).
Fact: Gojira, like you pointed out, has always been amphibious in nature. Trying to put gills on a suit (and making it believable) would have been to difficult to do back in 1954.
Fact: Since reptiles never had a need for gills, even in the dino times when they ruled the seas they never had gills.
Fact: Amphibions do not have gills. One member species look like segmented worms, but these aren't scales either.
Fact: Fish-type life has those gills seen on the Licensing Expo Godzilla head and neck.

As it has been for so many people along the way, you're seeing something that's not there or something that you want to see. This creature is clearly insectoid in nature given the "skin" texture and the number of legs it possesses. There is no webbing that I can see in this picture, and I have a copy of the trailer itself which I've watched numerous times. Even watching it in HD, I saw (and see) no webbing in these feet.
This creature is clearly not a monitor lizard of any kind. Even mutated, a monitor lizard would not possess 6+ limbs. Using the excuse "radiation can do whatever you want it to" does not work because radiation's effects on creatures is surprisingly limited.

It doesn't matter what the story is or was, because you'd never get Marvel Studios to make an agreement with Legendary/Warner Brothers/Toho to make such a dumb idea.
Not to mention it would be inconsistent with the tone and feel of the new movie. It'd be like crossing over Agents of SHIELD with Law & Order. Wouldn't happen for hundreds of reasons.

As I remember hearing from the 1977-1979 comics with this crossover, the groups (not to mention the city) were spared because an ordinary human boy was able to convince Gojira to stop the attack. Not sure how or why this worked though (never read the comics).

Yes now go watch godzilla movies, toho's godzilla also loses most fights till humans intervene or he has extra help.
Most showa movies has a friend to 2v1 or more an opponent. Humans mess up controls to help godzilla better fight the monsters, ect.
There are very few Toho godzilla movies till the millennium series that he gets absolutely no help from any1 and still wins.
So under that logic they're exactly the same.
And anguirus, the monster that ran headfirst into Gigan's saw, would figure that out on his own? Yeah......
ReplyFordBrodyLover99Godzilla ForumToho vs TriStar TournamentNov 7, 2013
I did watch the show. It had the general idea, but still ended up sucking. Zilla Jr is weak, he needs help from the humans 99% of the time to defeat his oponents.
He is also kinda suicidal. He dashes into the monster and gets knocked down. He then returns close to the end of the episode to take down the monster AFTER the humans have weakened the enemy. Thats how most of them are, but there are exceptions.
Anguirus, while always being a punching bag, but im pretty sure he could take down the thorny devil. As far as i remember, his weak spot was his bottom. Im more than sure anguirus could turn the guy down and smash his clubbed tail into the bitch.
