DjdndnejwnwnGodzilla ForumMore Toho Kaiju In The MonsterVerse?

SasquaDash

Thats my point, American audiences don’t care about Toho kaiju. They didn’t detract from the audiences they just didn’t contribute at all. If they had had some allure, then it might have stood some chance against those films

"Its underperformance had nothing to do with it having the other Toho kaiju in it."

It certainly didn't foster a reason for the GA to see it either though--which would largely be the intent for spending money on them in the first place.

King of the Monsters was also released around the same time as Avengers: Endgame, which made over 2.7 billion, and the Aladdin remake, which made over 1 billion. Both of these films over shadowed Godzilla, which was one of the reasons why it underperformed. Its underperformance had nothing to do with it having the other Toho kaiju in it.

as much as id love to see the other Toho monsters in the Monsterverse i dont think there needed per se at least most of them  we have Methuselah for Anguirus,  Scylla for Kumonga, Tiamat for Manda, and im sure some of the other Titans fill similar slots for the other Toho monsters only Toho monsters i can see coming over new would be Biolante and Destroyah   Gigan possibly slim but possible.    Now when dealing with an existing property with a Huge fanbase   the mistake many studios make is  ignoring the existing fans and worrying about the non fans.  well see nothing can kill a Movie/show faster than Pissing off the existing fan base. you have to have some kind of balance.  I think KOTM "failure" wasnt because of Rodan, Mothra, Ghidorah. not drawing in people I think KOTM not doing well was a fluke. there was no rhyme of reason for it. personally i liked it  i wish Rodan and Mothra had had a bit for screen time and had done more and i think the lack of there appearance in GvsK had more to do with the complaints that KOTM had to many monsters.  theres really only 2 formulas for a Godzilla movie Godzilla vs humans or Godzilla vs other monsters both are "retreads" even if you say Godzilla vs aliens hes still fighting monsters so..  not much they can do New with Godzilla

SasquaDash,
Depends on what the deal entails. We have previously been told that two Godzilla movies can not be in production at the same time. (Sans animated films.) Which makes it all the more interesting that Legendary's next Godzilla project is a television series instead of a film.

I highly doubt Toho would have agreed to anything that halts plans they currently have in motion. So if the same deal and the same loophole applies to both studios... well...

My overall question is what does the MonsterVerse continuing mean for Toho's future projects? It seems somewhat unlikely that Toho will make any live action movies during this time, so I'm wondering if they have plans to continue the Reiwa series after Singular Point. I assume they'll still produce Godzilla media during this, but I'm curious as to what that could potentially be.

A "World of Godzilla" would still be part of the Reiwa series--So I don't really understand what's being said here.

That said, the World of Godzilla thing has been mentioned once in passing and never heard of again. That was around three years ago and it was never an official announcement. I'm sure (and hopeful) Toho has something up their sleeves, but there's no guarantee of what it is.

HinikunaGoji,
Agreed. Several box office analysts point out that while Rodan, Mothra and King Ghidorah meant a lot to fans, they were indistinguishable from the 2014 enemy monsters to the general audience. It was simply sold as another "Godzilla fights other monsters" movie which feels like (and is) a retread.

I just don't see it as a gamble worth taking. After all, if Toho's most popular names in their repertoire didn't draw a crowd why would more obscure monsters like, say, Gigan?

It's much safer to go the Hanna Barbara/Marvel route and have Godzilla fight original creations.

I can’t really see Toho kaiju becoming titans, even in movies, not only because they each are attached a cost, but as in previous times we see they don’t really attract crowds. So it would be easier to make up new ones then spend money on monsters that typically wouldn’t affect the box office.

Yeah, the cost of using other Toho monsters would probably be greater, if not maybe a little less than what they paid to use Rodan, Mothra and King Ghidorah, so they may not have them due to financial reasons but they might, idk have a small cameo or mention of some of them. But as for my chose to see what Toho monster in the show, I’d go with Baragon, Gigan and Megalon

Maybe not for the show, but it's possible that they could be used in the future. It seems unlikely that Legendary would renegotiate their contract with Toho and purchase the right to use Godzilla, to only use him in this one show. It's likely that we'll probably have some more movies and comics with Godzilla, so it's possible that some other Toho kaiju could show up in them.

HinikunaGoji,
Exactly. That financial gamble didn't pan out for King of the Monsters and, if rumors are true, led to Rodan being cut from GvK.

The TV show is already going to have an uphill battle of putting out similar visuals from episode to episode while trying to keep the costs down. Licensed monsters would just make that a lot tougher.

That said, I don't necessarily see it as an impossibility, just a supremely unlikely one. Best case scenario is it's mostly original monsters and much, much fewer Toho kaiju.

The only films currently categorized in this era are Shin Godzilla and the GODZILLA anime trilogy.

I’m not sure it’s likely, each IP is worth money so..

I’m not sure they’d spend that much money just for fans

Yeah, it feels likely.  Biollante, Anguirus, Varan, Gigan, Destroyah, Zilla, Jet Jaguar and Shin Goji should all show up.

I'd say the main (4th) form, but that seems a little too obvious, so I'm gonna go with the 2nd "Kamata-Kun" form because he looks like a googly-eyed armless frilled shark/moray eel/rubber chicken hybrid and is just too weird and goofy not to be loved.

If they eventually did a alternate dimension/multiverse plot point with Shin Godzilla (or possibly other Toho incarnations) showing up and meeting the MonsterVerse Godzilla, I would be all for it!

As in the "Shin" content, but you had a good point by the merch sales.

That would be interesting. Using the series to bridge the gaps between films could help with world building, it would also give them plenty of ideas to work with.

I agree actually. They’ve been far more interested in they’re more recent projects, but I find it hard they want to phase Shin out entirely, he’s been very profitable for them, ie: rides, merchandise, etc.

If involved in this MV series, I’d kinda want to see shin show up at a point. but I don’t know

sonictiger

Im confused by what you mean by “ditch reiwa” that would imply they just stop making things post 2016 which is when the reiwa era is.

The 5 years between KOTM and GVK could use some more background.  Here's my 3-season idea:

Season 1: Takes place between Godzilla (2014) and Godzilla: King of The Monsters.  Godzilla along with more original Titans show up, and I would like to see characters like Biollante and Gigan appear in that season.  Most of the human characters are all new, but potential cameos could include Ishiro Seriwaza (Ken Wantanabe) and Emma Russell (Vera Farmiga).

Season 2: Takes place between KOTM and Godzilla Vs. Kong.  Entirely new human cast lineup, with possible cameos from Mark Russell (Kyle Chandler), The Chen Sisters (Zhang Ziyi), and Houston Brooks (Joe Morton).  It should bring back some of the KOTM Titans that had smaller screentime, and Rodan.  I'd also like to see some other Toho characters, like Anguirus and Varan.

Season 3: Takes place post-GVK.  Focuses on the characters established in the previous two seasons with the possible supporting role of Madison Russell (Millie Bobby Brown).  I think it should bring Mothra back along with all-new Titans to pal around with Godzilla.  That's all.

Ok, how was that?

I think so, but they'll probably ditch the Reiwa and move forward with the "World of Godzilla" initiative.

Honestly I’d like it to focus between GvK and KOTM or pre GvK in general

I think they'll have just Godzilla and some new monsters for the first season (since that will be post-G14), and then go into a world post-GVK in future seasons.

Awesome! I want to see Godzilla (obviously), Scylla, Behemoth, Rodan, Mothra, Kong, Na Kika, and so many more. I'm just so happy the Monsterverse continues. Maybe we'll get classic enemies like Gigan, Megalon, or SpaceGodzilla?
