Legendary's Monsterverse TV series takes place between Godzilla 2014 and Godzilla 2: King of the Monsters!

Legendary and Toho have agreed to produce a new live action Monsterverse TV series in partnership with Apple TV Plus. The show will expand the Monsterverse lore and introduce new characters and new Titans to the cinematic universe. Following our previous announcement last week about the upcoming series, an official plot synopsis was spotted over on SciFi Japan, which provides some significant details about when this series will take place within the Monsterverse chronology.

According to the current, official plot synopsis:

Following the thunderous battle between Godzilla and the Titans that leveled San Francisco and the shocking new reality that monsters are real, the series explores one family's journey to uncover its buried secrets and a legacy linking them to the secret organization known as Monarch.

This also insituates that we will likely not be seeing any other iconic Toho monsters reimagined for the series. Given that it was only in the sequel, King of the Monsters that other Toho monsters made their debut into the Monsterverse. This series sounds like an opportunity to explore new Titans unique to the Monsterverse itself without the reliance on established Toho characters.

This also insituates that the Hollow Earth and its Monsters will not be explored since its discovery was only made apparent in Godzilla vs. Kong.

That being said however, it is possible Kong may be involved, given that Kong: Skull Island takes place prior to Godzilla (2014).

As we learn more about the Monsterverse TV series plot we'll be sure to keep you updated!

As I've said before, it could be possible that this show takes an anthology format and fills in the gaps between G14 and KOTM, KOTM and GVK, and post-GVK.  I think it could be the best way to handle this show, and to make sure it's not too short or too long.

That would be cool, but we’ve just had confirmation it’s between G14’ and GVK

It would be cool, and they would have plenty of material to work with, but I'm fine with it just taking place between G14 and KOTM.

I hope they return to the cryptic, tenebrous tone of Godzilla (2014).

Same. I re-watched 2014 Yesterday, and I really love how suspenseful some of the scenes are. The movie has a really ominous tone to it and a feeling of impending doom, which was somewhat replicated in King of the Monsters, but was kind of missing from Godzilla vs Kong. The scene where the Male MUTO hatches and scene where the Female MUTO attacks the train are really suspenseful and legitimately scary. Even Godzilla himself feels like a mysterious force of nature, where you're not really sure if he's a hero protecting the world, or just an animal stalking his prey.

I loved the framing in G14’ it was always from the perspective of people, it was amazing. They did that a little in KOTM, but not really in GVK.

I love how parts of the fight were shot from the perspective of looking out windows, as if you were actually there witnessing the fight. I also really liked that they showed the people trapped in the city, it reminded you that it wasn't just some fun action scene and that people were actually caught in the middle of the battle, which made it feel a lot scarier.

SasquaDash,

Shooting the monsters from a human perspective really elevates the scale of these creatures, and the feeling of godlike monsters looming over you is just breathtaking. One of the major problems of Pacific Rim: Uprising was that the camera was too...unrestrained, making the jaegers feel like toys at times. Godzilla vs. Kong was similar in that aspect, but the fluency of action and the weight in movement prevented the "toy" feel.

HinikunaGoji,

Agreed.

G14 is very underrated, but this show could avenge it, especially if muto prime is in it.

I hope they lean more into mysticysm with the series, like singular point did. Rather than just rely on scifi logic
