MemberAnguirusJan-24-2022 9:11 AMMy personal favorites (in order of oldest to newest):
1954 "ShodaiGoji": The original suit that started it all, without it the other designs wouldn't exist. This Godzilla probably has my favorite designs for his dorsal plates, and it's easy to see why they eventually integrated them into the MonsterVerse design. There are shots in the original 1954 film where this design looks legitimately scary and really gives off the enraged radioactive monster vibe that the film was going for.
1964 "MosuGoji": To me, this is the definitive Showa Godzilla design. It managed to look both fierce and intimidating (without looking too evil) as well as looking a bit more benevolent (without looking too friendly or goofy). It was one of the first Godzilla designs that I saw when I was younger and still remains one of my personal favorites.
1984 "84Goji": My biggest issue with the late Showa Godzilla designs is that they look a little too friendly and goofy (especially in the 70s, where he looked like a plush toy), thankfully the 1984 brought back the more fearsome aspect of Godzilla. In some ways I actually like this design a bit more than the later Heisei design (which is saying a lot because I love the Heisei design). The only nitpick I have with it, is that the eyes are a bit too large and can look a little goofy in some shots, but other than that the design looks amazing. This is easily one of the first designs I think of when I think of classic Godzilla.
1995 "DesuGoji": The Heisei series had a pretty cool design for Godzilla, but his appearance in Godzilla vs Destoroyah managed to make it even cooler, or hotter in this case (bad joke, I know). The glowing patches of orange, the piercing red eyes and the fact that smoke is constantly erupting from him, makes him look super intimidating and badass. They state in the film that Godzilla's meltdown could potentially threaten the entire planet, and this design really gives off that impression.
MonsterVerse "LegendaryGoji": I think the biggest question we all had during the production of Godzilla (2014) was "what will Godzilla look like?", especially considering how the previous American attempt at the character was portrayed. In my personal opinion, the MonsterVerse design was a near perfect reinterpretation of Godzilla's classic design. It feels like they took features from the past Godzilla designs and blended them together into something that was new, yet still instantly recognizable. I remember my first reactions to seeing this design back when it was leaked in early 2014 were "That's Godzilla!" and "They Finally Got It Right!".
