Gareth Edwards: How soon Production for Godzilla Sequel begins Depends on China

In an interview with Netease Entertainment of China two days ago, ( http://www.hinews.cn/news/system/2014/06/15/016735262.shtml ) - It's in Chinese.

Gareth Edwards' response for the sequel to Godzilla is this:

Netease: "So after Godzilla 2014, what plans do you have, e.g. any interest in other monster movies?"

Gareth: "I guess it would have to be the sequel to Godzilla. We'll see about that, depending on the response from audiences in China. If the reception is great, we will commence production immediately for the next movie."

Meanwhile elsewhere in China official media outlets gave the movie review a 7.0 - 7.4 score rating. CNS China reports that in top Chinese forums, viewers found the most satisfying aspects of the movie to be in the last 30 minutes. Scenes that astounded them were the appearance of the MUTOs, the final fight between Godzilla and the MUTOs and Godzilla's fire breath. The massive size of Godzilla was also a sight to behold. While the final fight was an inspiration, users also went online to criticize the movie for keeping Godzilla elusive throughout 2/3s of the show, which kills the excitement.

One member of the audience who was interviewed remarked: " I went to the cinema to catch Godzilla fighting monsters. Who cares whether the leading actor had trauma from his childhood, or if his wife is nurse or doctor and their kid is 5 years old, or even if he rescues a japanese kid on the monorail? I waited nearly 2 hours just to see Godzilla battle the MUTOs, and just when it happens, the scene cuts to the guy trying to diffuse the bomb (and we are still not done with him yet!). What were the producers thinking? "

As of now Godzilla 2014 has grossed $439 million from the US Box-office and overseas markets. It needs to earn at least $110 million to match up to Pacific Rim in China and to breach the $550 million mark. Comparatively, Godzilla 1998 made $379 million worldwide, and when adjusted for inflation translates to $643 million today.

Just to update you guys on the reviews for Godzilla 2014 in China. The first wave of audiences have given their early verdict. In 2 days Godzilla has dropped from a rating of 7.4 to 6.7 as of now on China's Douban.com - one of the country's most popular movie sites.

Almost close to 29,000 users have given their rating so far, along with over 16,000 comments on the site. Of the people who rated Godzilla, 10.8% felt the movie was excellent, 31.7% thought it was good, 44.3% of them felt it was average, while 10.4% said it was not good, and a remaining 2.8% said it was mediocre, resulting in the current score of 6.7.

Oddly, of the comments/reviews that were positive, they mostly contained the keyword 'Ultraman', with many saying that Godzilla is the new incarnation of Ultraman - Savior of Mankind. The association with Ultraman is also mixed with sacarsm and humor saying its time for Ultraman to retire. While comments that were negative blasted the movie mainly for the poor storyline and the minute amount of time the audience actually gets a decent view of Godzilla.

After the movie's screening, China News Network posted an article yesterday in Chinese stating: The New Godzilla - Watch it or not, you'll regret it both ways. '

To sum up the article, the reviewer basically attacks the storyline, saying its illogical and weak, and immeasurable to Pacific Rim. Instead of turning out to be a classic monster-flick, Godzilla transforms into an Ultraman of sorts, destroys the MUTOs, and roars before leaving for the sea, as if telling humanity there's no need for thanks, it's his pleasure. In the end, Godzilla's image as King of the Monsters has been tarnished.

Meanwhile today, China's XinHua News Network posted a rather insulting article with the header: ' Godzilla takes over from Ultraman. King of Monsters becomes the new companion of the wretched humans. '

It's in Chinese: http://news.xinhuanet.com/ent/2014-06/17/c_126629496.htm

To translate it, it bascially says many members of the audience now think Ultraman is about to lose his job as savior of Mankind because it now comes in the form of Godzilla. And Godzilla now proclaims 'I represent Justice!' It adds that if you are watching the movie expecting a big bad lizard to wreak havoc, you will be disappointed because Godzilla has just become Mankind's largest and most reliable sidekick. Some female members of the audience when interviewed said " This Godzilla is simply a hit and makes for the best Pet of the year! When you are happy, you can bring it out for a ride in the sea, and when you are in danger, it braves fire and water to save you. And when its time to rest, reporters can take glamor shots at your pet before it waves goodbye to them. Simply like a Boss! "

And lastly, another entertainment news outlet interviewed Gareth E yesterday, asking him why is Godzilla so 'friendly' towards humans? The article also contains negative remarks about the film.  http://ent.qq.com/a/20140615/027418.htm

Just he is a Force of nature who protects the earth, And doesnt care about the humans whatsoever. Remember guys, This is just the first movie of the new age. The sequel is gonna be much better.

Good grief.

lol destroyahx you're being an ass here. i was making an actual valid argument and then you call me naive/troll. and when people call you a hater, you tell them to chill. please explain who should be the one who needs to "chill", and who is the actual troll.

of course gareth didn't make it JUST for godzilla fans, but he definitely put godzilla fans as his priority to please. look, he's trying to satisfy godzilla fans, and then still trying to hit what mainstream audience wants. isn't that what a director should be about? seriously i can't believe you're actually argueing whether he's doing it for the money or not- ANY GODZILLA fan would understand once they have watched the movie. I, for one, has watched it 3 times on imax- thats how crazy I am about godzilla.

its freaking pointless talking to someone who doesn't try to take in whatever you just say, and instantly put a label on it as naivety. also, the only reason why you cannot remember one iconic scene from the movie is because there are WAY too many. that's the problem i guess, usually the grand scale works alot better when you have a snooze fest for 80% of the movie. gareth has tried to pull grand scenes off in too many parts of the movie, but his art direction is still impeccable. the only criticism i have for godzilla is for ATJ's performance (and even to a worse degree, beth olsen).

Moderator(s) you may want to take note:

Have reported the above comments by @SelimBradley (Suspected clone account of somebody in this forum) with that name-calling and two posts this person made are trolling comments that bear no relevance to the topic except to irritate. Of all places/threads to post comments, it's funny for someone with only 1 post history to make two postings here, and he starts calling people an ass. :)

@SelimBradley:

If what you are saying is not trolling,  then please show me where you got the source that says Gareth Edwards himself stating he directed/produced this movie solely to please his Fans nor does he care how much money this movie makes? And also please tell me where is the source when you say Gareth Edwards is in this not for the money/fame or some other holy reason, when he is merely funded by Legendary and given the nod by the studios and he doesn't run his own movie studio if you realise?

Appreciate if you don't lump what you think and put words into another person's mouth and state that it's Gareth's own words. Thanks.

@GorillaGodzilla - Yes, have read your comments. But I guess we can't stop the Chinese from thinking that way, though to be honest I kinda dislike them associating Godzilla with Ultraman and I dun even know why they put Godzilla and Ultraman in the league. In fact even before the Chinese from China said that, I have already seen Malaysians and Hong Kong Chinese too associating Godzilla with Ultraman.

I think the worst comment I've heard now is them calling Godzilla the Pet of the Year.

This the problem guys. Its a perecption problem.

Godzilla has become this gentle beast who is similar to Ultra Man.

I mean, of all things.

Look back to Godzilla 2000 for a moment. What does Godzilla do after victory?

Does he take a nap? Does he gently go back to the ocean while people cheer?

NO! He goes on a rampage. That is Godzilla. Even the "hero" Godzilla could go on a rampage.

By not having him take the military on directly, you loose much of that feeling about him.

Okay, he didn't take on the military, does he have to also lie down and nap in the dirt?

Did he really need Ford to save him ontop of all of that as well?

How does that set up for the sequels?

Who will save Godzilla in the future battles with stronger monsters? Will he lie down in the dirt again?

Will he again dive beneath aircraft carriers and have a military escort?

Things like that go a long way and it went and made Godzilla much less then what he could have been.

Talisman- Let me educate your, "Smash brain brain." Godzilla in the old movies, Wait for it Fell down and took NAPS TO HEAL HIMSELF TO. Go watch the old movies and see your SMASH AND BASHIN LIZARD. He naps heals himself and gets back up and fights. Except in this one he falls over because of getting smashed on the back by a building, In the old ones he got pooped on by hedorah. Also at the end after he did one of the most epic things ever the ATOMIC KISS he was so burnt out after swimming to hawaii then san fransico and nevada he fell down rested for a few hours gets back up walks away like a boss and goes away, Just like in Godzilla vs the smog monster. The napping is his regeneration factor Not falling in the dirt you dumby. Read this And understand it your idiotic perifrian.

Guys, Chinese audience perception aside, there's another piece of update on the US Box-Office. Godzilla is down one spot this week in the US at #7. The past Friday to Sunday, 13th to 15th June combined sales is at $3.2 million, which is an average of about $1 million.

For the beginning of this week Monday 16/6, Godzilla brought in $385,000. For a day-to-day comparison, what Godzilla makes per day, X-men is still making at least 2-3 times as much. I also noted that Godzilla initially opened to over 3,900 cinema screens across US, similar to X-Men but now it is down to 2,088.

Let me provide a simple calculation below by comparing Godzilla to X-men and Neighbours which each debuted 1 week apart:

X-Men Days of Future Past: (25 day debut)

(Initial) 4001 screens (To date) 3042 - Reduction of 959 screens = Average loss of 38 screens per day.

Godzilla: (32 day debut)

(Initial) 3952 screens (To date) 2088 - Reduction of 1864 screens = Average loss of 58 screens per day.

Neighbours: (39 day debut)

(Initial) 3311 (To date) 1896 - Reduction of 1415 screens = Average loss of 36 screens per day.

This is perception and its the first movie. You want to establish Godzilla as awesome,

as "The King of the Monsters" not "King of the sleepers"

IN the old movies, Godzilla upon victory doesn't usually stumble fall down and take a nap

in the dirt. Godzilla 2000, he went on a rampage. Godzilla vs Gigan he went to the ocean and swam away. In that he had blood pouring out of his head.

In Raids Again, he had a very lengthy battle and still had the will to keep on fighting.

Saving Godzilla should have been in the 3rd movie.

What happens now? Godzilla only faces monsters weaker than the Mutos?

Or are you advocating he is to be saved in each movie?

Moroever, how did the Godzilla species ever survive? Two Mutos had Godzilla at their mercy. Seeing the number of eggs, it seems to me that they would vastly outnumber the Godzilla species and Godzilla couldn't really handle two of them.

So now instead of "The King of the Monsters" we have a monster that when facing strong opponents must rely on human help.

Either that or the sequels must use weaker creatures. Which kinda sucks imho.

Its also apparent that he will need his nap time right after battles so we can throw out his rampage after victory as in Godzilla 2000.

Godzilla 2014 needed Ford to save him

Godzilla 2014 needed Ford to distract the Muto for the behind the back attack

Godzilla 2014 had to lie in the dirt right after.

Sorry man, that just doesn't sit well with me. That is not how you establish something as being "The King of the monsters" or "Natures revenge"

I didn't wait all these years to start glorifying that type of Godzilla.

Sure Godzilla needed human help under certain situations with monsters of incredible power like Ghidorah, but not in all the flims and certainly NOT IN THE FIRST FILM.

save that type of stuff for the sequels as the monsters become stronger.

Dood did i not jsut say he falls over to use his healing factor! And like i said this Godzilla DOESNT GIVE A FREAKING DAMN ABOUT HUMANS. Thats why he doesnt destroy them. When he falls over he regenerates not a nap. Look up some godzilla history and stop basing it off of Godzilla 2000 Which wasnt that good, It was a Smash and Bash film.

Good grief.

Destroyah-x- Thanks for all the useful info. I think you're trying to give a helpful perspective and some people are just thumbing their noses at what seems pretty clear. I'm not arguing with anyone anyomre. It's starting to get a little absurd I think and I don't feel like getting sucked into it any more than I already have been. The core of your argument is correct. The numbers tell an important story. If you should happen to keep us updated on the box office, I will be reading with interest.

Godzilla also isn't a sequel. X-Men has 7 films under their belt. Yes, Godzilla has... 28? 29? But those really don't count. Not in the majority of the world. That hurts it a bit.

But you're right on most every other account. The movie was recieved luke warmly. A poor script that jumped around with only stereo typical characters as opposed to real character arcs or development. The teases of what we really came to see certainly didn't help. Still, even after the '98 debacle, we can't seem to make a Godzilla movie.

It wasnt meant to be a SMASH AND BASH FILM HOW MANY DANG TIMES MUST I SAY THAT. You all just wanted a film with know story and just godzilla fighting. Every seen Godzilla was in was perfect AND THIS IS JUST 1 FILM WAIT FOR THE SEQUELS. Consider this is like the intro of a new video game doesnt show to much But wait until you get in that game WOO.

Ok here goes. On behalf of all the members who have responded to this thread, this is my message and last reminder to you @GorillaGodzilla:

1. Yes, we already get it. You think Godzilla 2014 is great, you understand where Gareth Edwards is coming from and how he directs the movie. Good for you but this is your perception, and you need to understand that not everyone has that same perception nor should they follow what you think. That's why there's a term called an 'Opinion' and that's why we have a place called a 'Forum' isn't it? Nobody is stopping you from thinking what you want, but it appears your responses to the members here are starting to get aggressive and personal here, so you need to Cool it. By the way using a lot of Caps in your words is not going to make your argument any better or convincing. Thank you.

2. You think Godzilla 2014 deserves to be one of the best movies and you are trying to convince others through your arguments in this thread. Good for you, but not everyone is convinced. No, not even the millions out there who watched Godzilla. The fact remains, I have provided the statistics and Box-office numbers so far. There is simply no denying that Godzilla is indeed under-performing ever since it launched with an explosive start. If audiences are indeed thinking along the same line as you, why are the sales numbers not telling the story? Has it occured to you that the audiences are not convinced with Gareth Edward's direction? If Godzilla 2014 is not convincing them enough, its not your fault, it's lies with Gareth's inability to convince them well enough, and audiences just do not agree well enough to recommend the movie to those around them. While Godzilla has crossed the $450 million mark to date, X-Men and Spider-Man individually are already hitting $700 million. Worst thing is Godzilla opened bigger than both the latter in the first week. We won't deny the box-office numbers to tell the story, there's also no denying that the average reduction of screens per day on Godzilla is happening faster than usual. So why are cinema screens shutting out the movie faster than usual if Godzilla is bringing in money for them, unless its not because patrons are giving the movie a miss?

3. And lastly, relax man. The fact that people like us here responding in this thread or this forum altogether is not for nothing. We are fans of Godzilla, and who doesn't want the movie to make a Billion dollars? We are just unhappy that Gareth Edwards squandered the opportunity given to him to make Godzilla a true-epic, when the last time we saw Godzilla on the big-screen was 16 years ago. We didn't wait 16 years just to settle for a film that had the right qualities and cast but wrong direction, only to end up making less than $600 million dollars. The long-wait alone is already a strong reason for people to catch Godzilla, which is why Godzilla is Crushing the box-office in the first week because there was so much, so much hype. But the after the first-wave of audiences? Not crushing anymore. Disastrous. What happened? Come on, the King of Monsters losing out to a small man in a spidey-costume and some X-mutants? That's an insult.

Very well said. I think it is high time for some fans to realize that there are a number of

Godzilla fans who were not happy with this, and are not just 'haters'.

I do believe the numbers are telling. The movie had the most interest,

it had the greatest 'wave' to ride for success and it fell apart. That responsibility sits squarely on the director's shoulders.

The numbers don't lie. It is true that a lot of movies experienced a drop off this year,

but Godzilla had the largest and movies like X-men have already passed it at the box office despite having less on the opening.

I honestly believe that Legendary knew they had a dud, and marketed in a certain way, to get as many people into the theater as possible.

Just to add one more point.

The trailers for this movie -Teased the Mutos

The trailers showed -Godzilla

The movie itself-teased Godzilla

The movie itself-showed the Mutos

Your left scratching your head. Godzilla was already shown in the trailer! Its obvious that this was a marketing ploy to get in as many people as they could.

Who builds tension in a movie by hiding the creature you already shown in your trailers??

DestroyahX and Talisman- I get both your points and i respect all your opinions, I may have started getting a little harsh. But it was because you guys were saying things like, "Oh he didnt fight the millitary enough" and, "Godzilla is not epic." When if you would understand what i was trying to say was the new Godzilla isnt perfect! But its a amazing start to the era of godzilla. You should stop being negative about the box office because dont you want to see a better sequel?? Dont you? Gareth edwards whole direction with this film was to, On quote For the millionth time lol, "Not make a smash and bash film!" Just understand this film take it in it wasnt perfect but it really was perfect wasnt it? in its own way it was perfect. And destroyahx This godzilla was EPIC i dont get your points about that. Also for every person who says there wasnt any destruction caused by Godzilla Go watch the bridge scene and look at what he did, "Smash and bash instincts attacking." So guys let me reiterate my point, Godzilla 2014 was a incredible film but it was incredible as a INTRO not the actual thing. Im sure when that sequel comes, "Praying for 2016" Its gonna be incredible and you guys should be putting good energy into that.

GORILLAGODZILLA77897,

I wouldn't want a sequel with Gareth Edward's directing though. I would like to see a sequel, but someone else directing the movie. I think his vision of Godzilla is just not with the times. Its not that it has to be Pacific Rim, but, things these days have to be "awesome"

Like I mentioned, they teased the Mutos in the trailers. All the focus was on Godzilla in terms of monster focus in the trailers. The movie it was Godzilla who was teased and the main monsters were the Mutos. They already showed Godzilla in the trailers but then tease him in the movie? I didn't like that. It was deceptive.

A newer up to date Vision of Godzilla by a director who has the "balls" and is not afraid of showing Godzilla. A director who actually believes in Godzilla as a character that will not become boring. That doesn't mean he has to show Godzilla all the time, but people are there to see Godzilla do what he does.

Just to add, a sequel with Edwards will be very difficult and I don't think it will succeed.

To many people are now aware of his style and the marketing that was behind his vision of Godzilla. People tend to have long memories. There won't be that initial box office push the next time and the movie probably would flop all together.

What is Edward's plan? More monsters I heard.

Okay, well that means less time for Godzilla yet again. The movie surely won't be called "Godzilla"

Can anyone see that the first movie in a trilogy (potential) has to really focus on the main character?

The next movies will be introducing other monsters, other things, less time for Godzilla.

Since Edwards introduced Godzilla as being rather weak, can Edwards really introduce monsters stronger than the Mutos?

He can't. He put himself into the corner with the first film. To be consistent, Godzilla would need help YET AGAIN, he would be limited in his atomic breath, and would need to sleep and fall down right after.

He can't ignore that. He did that in the very first movie.

Personally with him directing I can't see the sequels will be successful.

@GorillaGodzilla - If you think its epic, well that's nice :) Unfortunately saying the film is totally epic will not matter to the studios. Legendary studios looks at the sales numbers to determine success because ultimately, people make big-budget movies for money. - That's the reality and that's what keeps them going, and that's what keeps the sequel coming too. Let's face it, movie-making is a very competitive and risky business. Having a small pool of fans say its epic is not going to keep Legendary studios afloat nor get it nearer to its ambitions of becoming a full-fledged independent production company - its the mass audiences that keep them afloat. Let's look at China, the first wave of audiences who went online to rate Godzilla after watching the show, only less than 12% of the 28,000 users who rated the show thought the movie was excellent. Likewise, people like you who think Godzilla is epic will probably form less than 15% of the world's audiences who felt that way about the show. But you know what? Over 80% of audiences who watched X-Men Days of Future Past actually felt the show was excellent and look at the box-office numbers. Nearly $700 million dollars. They must have been recommending X-Men a lot more than Godzilla to their friends and family isn't it? And you telling me to stop reporting negativity in Godzilla's box-office numbers is like being in a state of denial. I can choose not to publish the sales numbers here, but thats not gonna change anything. I can assure you Legendary studios is keeping a much closer tab than us on the sales, and if China turns out the same way like the rest of the world, I wouldn't be surprised they end up changing the director for the sequel and that's something you cannot change.

@Talisman - Thanks for commenting and seeing the bigger picture here. I believe not only do sales numbers tell us how well audiences perceive Godzilla as a whole, it also serves as the best indication to Legendary Studios whether they are in the right or wrong direction. If they know that formula isn't working, they gotta either change it, or improve much better. I'm very sure Legendary wasn't expecting Godzilla to make around $550-600 million when they quickly announced a sequel for the movie at the start. They did so because Godzilla opened to such huge numbers at the start that projections got wild, so I guess the drop that followed must be pretty shocking too for them.

And lastly, I think you folks need not respond to GorillaGodzilla any further, because he is in love with the movie and we aren't gonna go on squibbling for that. (Saves your energy typing out your responses to him as well) I am more interested in paying attention to the 2nd to 3rd week of China's sales numbers because they will determine the course of the sequel. :)

@GMan123 - Instead of playing the question game on @Talisman to justify Gareth Edwards, I can tell you the answer right away. It's Anyone. Yes, Anyone out there. There are 7 Billion people on this planet to choose from.  Let's face it, Legendary Studios did not pick Gareth only because he was the best person for the job. They took a risk and a leap of faith with Gareth because of what he did with 'Monsters' and they felt they had a vision, and it was also budgeting, budgeting and nothing but budgeting in mind that Legendary had when letting him take on the project. Besides he's not as expensive as other epic directors to engage. So in the end its still down to the economies of scale here. Gareth Edwards is not a professor in Godzilla-nomics nor is he the best expert in Toho Kingdom by the way. What makes you think he is the right and only person capable of delivering? Right now the sales fall after its explosive debut is undeniable, the box-office numbers are clear enough to conclude that. If I'm running a movie studio and numbers aren't matching what I projected to make, do you think I would still stick to the same director?

And since when was I justifying Edwards? Where did I say that? I honestly want to know who else people see as plausible directors for the future. I'm not an expert with whose good at what, so I usually look at what other people say first.

@GMan123 , @TalisMan

And one more thing I would like to add here. When it comes to making movies, studios take a huge risk when it comes to producing a sequel, because there is a high probability most of the time that sequels fail to match what the original film made or even flop altogether. UNLESS you happen to be in the same league as The Transformers, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter or Star Wars or even Avatar, any thought of a sequel carries that huge burden of a risk. How then do studios determine if a sequel should be justified? - They look at audience perception, reception and box-office numbers.

When we look at Godzilla's key market China, of the 32,000 people to date that went online to rate the movie, an alarming less than 11% of audiences actually thought the movie was excellent, while a majority of nearly half of them thought the movie was just average and being average is not going to cut it out here. Audiences can certainly forgive, but they will surely not forget. When you slap the sequel with the next Director as the same old Gareth Edwards, they would already know what to expect. - Average. So what are the chances that mainstream audiences will go back to watch the sequel? Say 10 - 15%? What are the chances that they might give it a miss? Probably half. A lot of faith from mainstream audiences has already been lost with the original, you can't expect them to believe in the vision of the sequel again. To make matters worse, they felt cheated by the movie's marketing. I think that's the greatest sin made by Legendary for this movie and they need to correct that.

And let's say Godzilla ends up making $550 - $600 million here. Would Legendary Studios feel safe to invest much more than the $160 million which they did on Gareth Edwards in the first round, knowing there is a big chance audiences who have watched the original would give the sequel a miss? Audiences already know what to expect from Gareth who produced a Godzilla monster below their expectations, so how else awesome can the monsters get here with the same treatment applied? Audiences do not forget and if I'm watching the account books over at Legendary, I wouldn't want to carry that risk of making a sequel that ends up making me less than $600 million again while spending much more than $160 million this time adding more monsters and special effects.

Talisman- Godzilla is weak...... He is weak....How many damn times have said he isnt weak in this film... Im done with you talisman go watch your old godzilla movie i dont think legendary studios gives a damn about your opinions and probably neither do care about my opinions either. Destroyahx- your saying that people shouldnt listen to me because im giving the facts, When your obsessed with the box office. I dont mean to start a fight or anything but this is a, "Hater Post" You guys didnt care for the movie so you want to rag on it, And i understand your whole, "Everyone has there own opinion" and i respect that but you completly went against yourself when you said for people not to respond to me. If you didnt care for the movie and wanted, "More smashing less teasing" Then dont watch the movie or care about it. And you completly disregarded when i said dont be negative about it if you want to see a sequel. And there is gonna be a sequel who cares if Gareth directs it, I thought he did a very good job with a rather Cheesy storyline. But dont all of you just want to see a Godzilla movie after 10 years? Its been 10 years since a Godzilla movie, And your ragging on this one and comparing it to 98 WHICH WAS SCUM, "Sorry if i offend anyone by that" Godzilla 2014 was actually a Godzilla film. And talisman he doesnt fall in the dirt he is regenerating like he does in most Godzilla films. Go revamp your Godzilla history and come back here. also its dropping in amercia because you cant get tickets anymore, Its out of theatres! Saying that, "We arent gonna go squibbling for that." This post would pretty much be dead right now if i wasnt still talking to you guys. I have told you all enough facts i dont care about any of your opinions neither does Legendary or warner bros. When the sequel comes out and its really good look at these posts i have made and think about why.

Good grief.

And destroyah Xmen is more popular then Godzilla thats why there is more money in the office. Just like with every superhero movie. Also your not counting inflation Xmen only made 200 million in the us, Not that much more then Godzilla which made 191 million in the us. And xmen hasnt made 700 million yet. Your not even good at the box office.

Good grief.

@Gman123 , @Talisman

Earlier I was talking to you about how audience perception and reception is key to shaping the development or possibility of sequels for movies. As I earlier touched on the reception of the audiences in China (Godzilla's key market) whom almost half of respondants on one of China's most popular movie sites, rated and felt the movie was average, let us look at X-men for example. I'm sure you must be curious how Chinese audiences are perceiving X-Men Days of Future Past.

Of the 108,226 movie-goers who rated X-Men to date, 38.2% felt the movie was excellent, the majority of 45.6% thought the movie was good, while 14.7% thought it was average, followed by a very minute 1.1% who thought it was not good, and a almost unnoticeable 0.3% rated it as mediocre.

Therefore, audience perception is important because it determines how well people would go on to recommend the movie to others around them.

As a general whole, I believe Edwards should be given a chance to helm the sequal to Godzilla. Certainly he's seen the feedback generated by his first steps into full-scale film production and is interested in doing better for his audiences. Not only that, but the movie industry needs new blood to keep it fresh and interesting - to provide new perspectives! Perhaps Gareth was, hmm, overwhelemed by the sheer vastness of what he'd taken on and subsequently had a few false-starts within his film. We all flounder a little when we're first learning to swim. Even so, I dearly hope that Edwards will take to heart the buzz (both bad and good) Godzilla has created and produce a sequal that will bring us G-Fans together in its praise - not polarize us and touch-off arguments. That being said, next time, he's going to be treading water in the deep end of the pool! To that end, I say we should give Edwards a second chance to show us what he's got - sink or swim. Perhaps this is a flower that takes just a bit longer than usual to bloom - at which point it completely captivates everyone looking upon it! I'm keeping my fingers crossed! :)

I just want to chime in quickly. We’re talking about sequels and it’s looking like there will be at least one more, which is great. I’m hoping they can improve on the shortcomings of this film. I also happen to be amongst the group of G-Fans here who did not love the movie. There were some good things, and I liked it but ultimately found it disappointing and a missed opportunity.

Just one little reality check though. With the talk of sequels, I harken back to before Godzilla was released. In interviews with Thomas Tull and Edwards, when asked about a sequel(s), both held off on speculating, not wanting to jinx anything and also to gauge how this one was received. Edwards himself was on record as stating that it would be great to do more and he would love to be a part of them, but if not, this movie was a standalone movie, and wraps up as such.

So, he approached this as if it could be the one and only, one and done. Here’s my movie, here’s what could be my one shot at this. That being the case I myself would be pretty pissed and depressed having this as a “one and done” American Godzilla movie. If I’m the filmmaker looking at it like that, wouldn’t I want it to be a ballsy, awesome one time movie?

Opinions are opinions, but the numbers don’t lie. People all over were excited to see this movie. It opened huge everywhere, but then petered out, because it didn’t have that sustainability and good word of mouth. Hell, I’m a huge Godzilla fan but I couldn’t give it a resounding recommendation to others!

Think about it. We’re all hoping they can improve things the next go-round, but imagine if this was it. Truly a missed opportunity.

THEGMAN123,

Russo Brothers?

Honestly, I would go with Del Toro and get him a really good script. He is got "balls"

he is not conservative. Sure, Pacific Rim was a bit overdone, but, he loves Godzilla, and is a huge fan, I think we would finally see justice done to Godzilla.

Edwards is to wrapped into his own vision to listen to honest and good criticism. He is really set on what he wants.

I agree with Destroyah. Why do we have to assume it has to be Edwards? He made a dud. Sure the film did really well, but, only initially.

With Del Toro, you would have somone who is not afraid to show Godzilla.

hey everyone, you want to point fingers at someone you point them to yoshimatso banno as he was the assistant director to this film remember?

I thought the movie was great it is in my top 10 favorites, still not the best no godzilla film to date can compare to the original 1954 film. :)

Yoshimatso Banno is the co-producer of Godzilla 2014 and not a director in this movie. He only helped obtain permission for the use of Godzilla from Toho Co. Ltd which was developed into the Godzilla 2014 movie today with the financial backing of Legendary Studios. He is currently planning for his sequel to Godzilla Vs the Smog Monster.

For what it's worth, I loved Pacific Rim. I liked the characters; I got them. And then, of course, in between the human stuff, it had giant robots fighting giant monsters. You actually got to see them fight. Several times! I did not feel short-changed at the end of it. It's a fun movie, plain and simple. Blown away at how much money it didn't make.
