OMG. I'm right here in Singapore, the ticket sales are seriously NOT moving fast at all.

From what I see, its screening the next day, and more than 50 cinemas will be screening Godzilla in different formats here tomorrow (Digital, 3D, ATMOS, D-BOX). It seems like a big opening but apparently my check on one of the cinema groups (Golden Village) at this point shows majority of the 21 cinemas have less than 20% of their seats booked, and that's one day before screening! :O

In comparison I recall it was all fully booked out one day before in the case of Transformers. This isn't a good sign at all, and also because Golden Village here (absurdly) just released availability of bookings to the public only TODAY. So its kind of a stupid move on the cinema's side to release tickets this late.

I decided to check on Cathay instead which released tickets as early as last week, and boy it is SHOCKING too. Less than 30% of the seats have been booked as of now.

OMG is this a bad sign? :*(

No its not. my suggestion is to be less concerned about things you cant control and be happy the movie will be out in 1 day.  Its a time for celebration

In my cinema there is one screening tomorrow at the premiere (room 1 with 270 seats and Dolby Atmos soundystem <333) and it is sold out for 6 days. The following days from 16th on there are 2 shows per day (6 and 9 pm) and for the first 3 days both shows have sold more than the half of the tickets.

So it's comparable with The Hobbit (2), where it was similar.

I must say that my cinema made NO advertisement for Godzilla before last weekend. Now it's full of stills, banners and all trailers are shown as ads everywhere (in the cinema and on their website) :D

Oh, I live in middle europe (austria), the hype is not so big here as for example in US or asia.

But I would not bother if I were you. Maybe in singapore more people buy the tickets directly at the cinema before the film starts?

DESTROYAH-X - I wouldn't be overly concerned about the ticket sales. The film will stand up on its own two legs when people begin to hear good feedback form others. In my experience, some areas just need a little positive reinforcement before they decide to take a chance on a film. I've seen it occur with several films in the past, including thr first Jurassic Park it you can believe it! As an aside: you live in Singapore? That's wonderful! I've heard it's exceptionally beautiful and peaceful there! :)

Does it really matter, I mean who cares about the ticket sales? GODZILLA HAS FINALLY RISEN!!!!!!!!! This is the time to rejoice in happiness, for the long-awaited arrival of our king is here!

Life is very simple, but we insist on making it complicated.

I live in Thailand, my IMAX theater had only 2 tickets booked and I'm not bothered by it in the slightest. For one, I get to have more space to myself. For two, I trust very much that people will become aware that the movie is out, and go blast those theaters immediately.

Here is a good rule of thumb to predict box office numbers:

1st weekend's domestic gross multiply times 3.  Add about 5% if the movie gets good reviews, subtract about 10-15% if the movie gets poor reviews.  So, if Godzilla brings in $90 million this weekend, the projected domestic numbers would be around $280 million

Now, triple those numbers for a blockbuster like Godzilla in order to come up with internationally numbers.  And then add 10% if there is a country who has a vested interest in the movie ( for example: England was just as interested in "Titanic" as America).  So, if the movie makes $280 in America that equates to about $560 million internationally, which totals $840 million, worldwide.  And because Japan will probably be curious, and maybe as excited to see the big fella as much as we are, the box office there will probably be high.

Two months ago I predicted that Godzilla's worldwide box office would be $800 million to $1 billion dollars.  I'm sticking with those numbers.  The only thing that will keep Godzilla from reaching those numbers are strong competition from The X-Men sequel, unexpected competition from another movie, bad weather and the studios miscalculating some of their marketing strategies.

So fear not, Godzilla-rites.  The movie will make enough money to warrant a sequel in about 5 years.

@Mikeynamez:  Yeah that's something we have no control over, but I really do hope Godzilla gets that huge amount of attention from moviegoers and the raving review it deserves from the general audiences here.

@Chelgri: I do hope so, but then again word of mouth spreads really fast and if the first wave of audiences adore the movie, then it will most certainly attract most of the non-fans to catch the movie. Cos I do come across non-fans who simply have no interest in catching the movie because they felt it would end off like Godzilla 98, where Zilla goes on a rampage and eventually gets slayed by the humans.

@Something Real: Haha yeah I'm right in Singapore, its a sleek urban environment but nothing much when it comes to natural beauty. And I guess you are right. I actually think there are people out there (still reeling from the effects of Zill's 98 bad story experience) who tend to be cautious when it comes to wanting to catch Godzilla 2014, and I am referring the the non-fans? They probably thought its just going to end up the same way except that the effects are now more advanced and story's a bit more sophisticated but the humans are gonna end up gaining a victory over Godzilla. My guess is most of them are probably waiting to hear what the first wave of audiences would like to comment about Godzilla before they decide to jump on the wagon. And I am sure the first group of people who are going to catch it would give fantastic comments about Godzilla because they would most likely be fans of the King haha.

@AggressivKaiju: Yes indeed the King is here, but it needs to bring in the masses to in order to be the undisputed King of Monsters not just cinematically but also commercially when pitted against other monster flicks. That's why it matters :)

@Weaver: It's good that you get to enjoy more space in your IMax theatre, but on the day of screening if you see yourself owning all that space, then that's worrying for Godzilla. :P

@RatedRex: You sound really upbeat about Godzilla's takings, and I do hope you are right about the earnings. For me though, I'm toning it down to something more down-to-earth say, $530 - $570 million worldwide ? Guess this would be sufficient to warrant a sequel. Something like how Batman was resurrected by Chris Nolan's direction and won praise and then went on to score bigger hits and takings with its sequels?

DESTROYAH-X - Indeed. I'm willing to make a wager that a great many tickest will start to sell once people realize that the film is worth seeing. :)

One thing to take note of is simply that most people dont reserve tickets. This film is the only movie I've reserved tickets for because of this lifelong obsession. People will be there, trust me, waiting in line to purchase a ticket. I know most people will say that reviews don't matter but that's a big lie. The Tomatoreader LARGELY decides people's interest in a film. If something gets a low score on Rotten Tomatoes I feel millions , no matter how much they anticipated the film will trust the verdict and save their money. The high score on that site alone will guarantee butts in seats.
