MemberMothra LarvaeJan-28-2014 4:40 PMSo before I say this I just want to say this is a theory, if it turns out to be true, please don't be mad at me.
Every since I saw the Teaser, one question has been in the back of my mind... Why the HALO jump? Now I get that this is a situation that we've never been in before and the military is getting desperate and whatnot... but there has to be more to it. What would be their purpose? They are unlikely to be evacuating civilians since there are so few of them. If it was the case that there's a high value target being evacuated, why would you need multiple soldiers when none of them could fight such a big threat no matter their numbers?
Here's my theory. At this point of the movie, the military is running out of options. Godzilla has taken out the Navy, he's shooting down any fighter jets and helicopters he see's with his atomic breath, and tanks and standard missiles have been wiped out/shown ineffective.
Perhaps the military wants to strike him with something he won't actually "see" coming? What if the paratroopers are dropping in, so that Godzilla doesn't shoot down their plane, ad so the troopers are able to get close to him this way right in the middle of the destruction, and are being tasked with placing some sort of GPS triangulation devices on Godzilla? Using these devices, the military could strike him with an AC-130 from above the clouds so as to not reveal the planes location, same for accurate carpet bombing, or even a missile salvo from ICBM's or something of that sort?
This is the only thing I've come up with... since everytime someone I know watches the trailer they always say to me "What are those little people going to do against that big thing?" this is the only answer I could come up with. What do you think?

MemberMothra LarvaeJan-28-2014 4:44 PMI think they just want to infiltrate in the city and rescue the civilians.

MemberMothra LarvaeJan-28-2014 5:23 PMI think they might be trying to rendesvou with someone trapped "inside" the zone that has information they need.

MemberMothra LarvaeJan-28-2014 5:58 PMGood thought. I was thinking more of an extraction of something, not someone. Like possibly some research, or a weapon that was in the city before Godzilla went stomping on it. They need to get it out before its all crushed and whatnot. The multiple people would be for protection. Maybe rioting on the streets, or smaller MUTO's running around (I hope not the latter, I don't like small monsters in Kaiju movies). There are a lot of possibilities. It didn't strike me as odd at all. I actually don't get the big deal over it.

MemberMothra LarvaeJan-28-2014 6:34 PMIn a situation this crazy I doubt there would be riotting. This isn't Manhatten where it's a massive island and plenty of places to hid therefore a person is able to become complacent of the threat enough to go robbing places... This is SF, a city with a much smaller downtown area and where a creature like Godzilla would be much more visible, hence the threat more in mind. Other mutos did cross my mind so not a bad idea. Serizawa is a possibility too, although since part of the movie takes place in 1954 I feel like he would be around in only that part.
I still like my idea the best since it would allow the military to attempt any last ditch effort before dropping a nuke on SF. (in the extended lore of Pacific Rim, for example, they tried everything before having to drop THREE Tactical Nuclear bombs on the first Kaiju before it finally went down. obviously, different monster, but in the government's mind could be similar)

I agree. I think it's possible they are going to laser godzilla. Or... And this just popped into my head now. Maybe we were going to try an nuke Godzilla, but something went wrong. Now the bomb has to be manually armed. Send more people because it is less of a chance for failure. Also, if they don't know it's exact location...
As for Sweizawa, I don't think he will only be in the 54' era, but I don't know (perhaps he is the son.grandson of the original). Has it ever been confirmed if this new movie is going to assume that the orriginal happend (Godzilla:Returns, Millennium sytle), or is it completely fresh. I mean, it could still be a reboot of the series, just with a later jump-off point.

MemberMothra LarvaeJan-28-2014 7:16 PMbu if you notice , while they're falling they're leaving a trail of blood mist

Linkman89
MemberMothra LarvaeJan-28-2014 7:32 PMI believe the trail is just part of the normal jump in this situation.
@Petedjo6- we do know part of the film was shot with cameras from the 50's era for a scene that takes place in the 50's. Hence the assumption about at least acknowledging the original film.

MemberMothra LarvaeJan-28-2014 9:22 PMMeaning there isn't any significance to the trail of smoke they're leaving behind them other than marking their positions/making sure they don't jump fall into each other when they deploy chutes. I believe it's pretty standard HALO jump procedure, nothing special in relation to Godzilla. That was my point.

MemberMothra LarvaeJan-28-2014 11:07 PMBecause it's fun jk lol. that is a good theory, I would of never thought of that.

Deadite Kaiju
MemberMothra LarvaeJan-28-2014 11:11 PMThat is a good theory but I still think they are evacuating civillians or searching for someone important like Serizawa who might be trapped in the city.

doggiezilla
MemberMothra LarvaeJan-28-2014 11:40 PMAlso a good theory. To me evacuating is the least that will happen.

MemberMothra LarvaeJan-29-2014 3:48 AMWhat if the M.U.T.O organization are evil and are controlling the mutos or maybe they are terrorists,so they have to take them down but its the only way in the city?

MemberMothra LarvaeJan-29-2014 1:53 PMI think there might be a much more simple explanation to this, actually.
Going in with military vehicles would attract Godzilla's attention straight away. Godzilla walks with a forward lean and a slightly downard gaze. Anything on the ground in front of him or within his peripherals would be fair game for him and would raise the chances of him engaging and causing more destruction than he alwready has. It also risks his atomic breath being let loose, which is more of a danger and a risk than the military would likely with to take if they saw it before hand.
If the scene in the trailer is their first major encounter with Godzilla, then that theory won't play into the decision.
However, Godzilla seldom looks up unless there's a good reason such as another monster flying about above him or some kind of strange and very loud object like a meteor about to drop on his head. A HALO jump would be the perfect way to get the soldiers into the disaster zone without Godzilla noticing their arrival (though the trailer wouldn't make that very clear since one of them is falling right next to his head).
It's not a bad plan to get them in unnoticed if they manage to avoid his gaze. Their descent under such circumstances as Godzilla wandering through a firey city with a storm above his head would mean he's not likely to hear the flares attached to their feet. They drop in from above and land either behind him or far enough off to the side of his peripherals and Godzilla wouldn't be too keen to give them the time of day.
Just a thought as to why it would be used. Practically speaking a HALO jump is a bit random for a first encounter, so I don't think this is the military's first encounter. They likely encountered him before but never had the time or preparation to deal with the situation. Likely a freak occurrence of some kind or at least a completely unexpected encounter where they were utterly decimated in short order.

MemberMothra LarvaeJan-31-2014 10:39 AMMy question is: if they're HALO-jumping in to rescue/retrieve anybody or anything, why are they jumping right on top of Godzilla? Unless I'm missing something, wouldn't it be better to jump into the city AWAY from him?
