MemberMothra LarvaeJan-20-2014 12:39 PMSo I was rewatching RedLetterMedia's Half in the Bag review of Pacific Rim, and they mentioned that one of the possible reasons for why the movie wasn't doing so well (at the time the review was made) was due to "big dumb fatigue". That is, the masses were becoming worn down by movies like the Transformers films, Battleship, etc, and that perhaps they didn't want to see Pacific Rim because they thought it would be more of the same.
And this got me thinking. The majority of the public appears to be getting sick of the "dark and gritty" trend that has been going on in the film industry lately as well. Will this affect the amount of money Godzilla will make once it comes out, especially since most of the public think Godzilla was always lighthearted and childish?

MemberMothra LarvaeJan-20-2014 12:49 PMi really dont know. i really enjoy the dark and gritty movies of today. i dont really count transformers as that gritty. theres a lot dumb humor involved those movies so i wouldnt classify them as "gritty"

MemberMothra LarvaeJan-20-2014 12:55 PMTransformers was not gritty. And neither was Pacific Rim. Those were fun "kid" movies with great effects. Gozilla has had many fun and silly moments in his franchise, except, that's not what he's about. He was started out as the visual representation of death and destruction. The metaphor of the atomic bomb. Just watch the original movie. That was their initial view on Godzilla. It only changed once things such as Gamera came out(Which aimed for children) that made TOHO deside to make Godzilla child-friendly because it ment more money. He bacame an icon in the process because those kids grew up and showed their kids etc. He gained generations. This new Godzilla movie is aiming towards his starting character. A frightening behemoth. A walking hurrican. No man, woman, child, building, nor monster is safe in his path. So the dark tone will only help. It will also interest people because everyone will notice this movie is taking itself SERIOUSLY.

MemberMothra LarvaeJan-20-2014 12:56 PMreally you either have dark and grity or big and dumb when it comes to movies, most movies like the hobbit, hungar games and harry potter have and element of dark and gritty.

MemberMothra LarvaeJan-20-2014 12:58 PMalso the guy never said transformers was dark and gritty he said it is a 'big dumb' movie.

MemberMothra LarvaeJan-20-2014 1:00 PMYeah, seriously. Transformers darkest moment lasted maybe a minute at the most. And that was in the third movie when they're trying to get back into the city after (spoiler) the autobots are "destroyed". Then right as you don't think it could possibly get any darker/grittier.. duhduhduhduuuh, the autobots arrive in time to save everyone from imminent doom. and everything becomes horrible attempts at comedic one liners and explosions.
I'm not tired of the dark and gritty stuff, i just don't think they should be making certain things dark and gritty. Everyone knows that Godzilla would be best served as a dark movie, much like the original. Everyone also knows that a dark and gritty Mickey Mouse is probably thhe most stupid thing imaginable next to making the Teletubbies into a psychological thriller.

MemberMothra LarvaeJan-20-2014 1:04 PM@GODZILLAFAN1995, I know, I was just trying to state that this Godzilla movie will not be filmed like Pacific Rim or like Transformers or anything of that matter. It's going in a different direction. I think people see that. Of course there's a chance it can flop. Then again many people dislike Godzilla 98 and it was still a hit. Godzilla is a worldwide Icon. He's been around for 60 years. I think finacially, it'll do alright. Lets just hope it does excellent.

MemberMothra LarvaeJan-20-2014 1:10 PMI didn't make myself clear: I was talking about the "big dumb fatigue" with movies like Transformers and Battleship. I wasn't saying that they were dark and gritty, I was simply using them as a point of comparison.

MemberMothra LarvaeJan-20-2014 1:54 PMI apologize. I haven't slept in a few days. Probably read it wrong.

MemberMothra LarvaeJan-20-2014 6:07 PMWorking at a theater, I can absolutely confirm the Fatigue is true. I would promote Pacific Rim at the box office and people would say "No thanks, we already saw transformers". It's not just with the dark and gritty films, movies always tend to negate eachother- you either see one or the other. One of the best examples would be "Whitehouse Down" and "Olympus has fallen" you either saw one or the other, really. Because you don't want to go over the same plot and action all over again.

MemberMothra LarvaeJan-20-2014 10:06 PMThe only thing I did not like about Pacific Rim, was the noise level, 60-70% of the time. could not hear what the actors were saying, many ways, atleast for Me, this is why Transformers not one of My top Movie francise, there has to be a cooling down factor just before an intense moment, dont feel the audience needs to be bludgeoned over the head for 2 hours with ear-splitting noise and special effects.
