Mike Dougherty has been quoted discussing Godzilla vs. Kong and the future of the Monsterverse cinematic universe with SFX Magazine and thanks to the recent scans which leaked online (you can see them all here), we know where the director of King of the Monsters thinks the series should go, if the Monsterverse is to continue on after Godzilla vs. Kong in 2020.
Dougherty thinks the Monsterverse should actually go back in time and take place in different eras, exploring more Monster origin stories:

Mike Dougherty: I like the idea of going back in time, and telling creature stories from different eras.
Skull Island was set in the 70's, but personally I'd like to do GODZILLA-BC, go back to ancient times and really see the Ray Harryhausen-esque world where primitive humans had to try to survive with these creatures.
Maybe we'd get to see the first time mankind truly encountered Godzilla, and get to see how that relationship was christened.
Legendary have already expressed great interest in continuing the Monsterverse on after Godzilla vs. Kong if King of the Monsters and GvK can perform well enough at the box office. Permitting Toho decides to renegotiate a new deal with Warner Bros and Legendary to continue making Godzilla movies, do you want the Monsterverse to take place in previous eras and play around within the Monsterverse timeline? Or should it continue on, chronologically after Godzilla vs. Kong? Let us know what you think would be best in the comments section!
