UPDATE: Skreeonk.com and Kaijucast's Facebook Page seems to have confirmed our suspicions. The poster is elaborate fan art that dates back to March. Although this information isn't too surprising, it's unfortunate since the poster is pretty striking. It may be presumptuous to say at this point, but it seemed right in line with what little marketing material we've seen thusfar.
Big thanks to Skreeonk.com for its eagle eye vigilance with this kind of stuff and confirming whether or not the poster was legitimate.
Original Article:
A (supposedly) new Godzilla poster for the 2016 Toho film, directed by Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi, has made its way to North American fans-- At least it seems new. And it looks real. Below is the image in question.
Skreeonk.com and master artist Bob Eggleton revealed the poster to fans recently. The artist of the upcoming Godzilla in Hell comic said of the image, “From the looks of this poster it seems 'back to basics' in recalling the 1954 film.” Mr. Eggleton was tipped to the poster by original Godzilla suit actor Haruo Nakajima after posting it himself. Nakajima sharing the poster adds credence to its legitimacy. Yet the image is actually much older than we realize.
Apparently Japanese fans have been tweeting this image since March 31st, the day the 2016 film's directors were announced. With all the publicity surrounding the announcement why did this poster go so unnoticed? We've seen Godzilla's new footprint and the slapped together icon, but the promotion above is arguably far more impressionable. Why hasn't Toho been flaunting it?
Another red flag is that the poster's website (godzilla2016.jp) goes nowhere and, at the moment, does not seem to be registered. Of course there's plenty of time for that to change. Yet since we can't find a single Toho source, we're hesitant to label it as real.
Whether it's fake or not the image is making waves in the fandom and adding hype for the new film. We'll learn more about it as it comes.
So what do you think? Real? Or fake? Sound off!
Thanks to High Flyers Tag Team for the tip.
