Due to the massive success of Shin Godzilla's limited North American run, Funimation announced Toho's popular reboot will be given an extension!
On Saturday, October 22nd, 200+ theaters across North America will have a matinee showing of Shin Godzilla. Additionally, select theaters will continue screening the film for the next two weeks--Through Thursday, October 27th. You can check Funimation's official Shin Godzilla Website to see if you live in one of the lucky cities. If a theater near you is not listed, keep checking back for updates.
Funimation CEO Gen Fukunaga spoke on the film's extension,
“We’re thrilled with the tremendous response to Shin Godzilla from the press, audiences and our theatrical partners. Fans have been asking and we’re pleased to confirm that the movie will extend its run with this Saturday’s matinee as well as more than a week of daily screening.”
Having grossed well over $1.5 million in a week, Shin Godzilla was only given one showing per day. Depending on the date, Toho's latest was only showing on 490 to 26 screens across the US and still managed to break the top 10 during its first three days. It maintained the highest average of ticket sales per screen during this time and easily mopped the floor with limited indie releases.
Shin Godzilla's success, in both Japan and abroad, has prompted more interest in the franchise with three Godzilla projects currently in the works. (The animated, Godzilla [2017], Godzilla 2 [2019], Godzilla vs. Kong [2020])
