Recently we reported on Japan's oldest film publication, Kinema Junpo, honoring Hideaki Anno and Shin Godzilla at their awards ceremony. Today, Shin Godzilla is honored by the Japanese Academy Awards (or "Prize") after receiving a whopping 11 nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director(s).
Shin Godzilla's full list of nominations is below:
Best Picture
Best Director(s) – Hideaki Anno & Shinji Higuchi
Best Actor in a Leading Role – Hiroki Hasegawa
Best Supporting Actress – Satomi Ishihara
Best Supporting Actress – Mikako Ichikawa
Best Original Score – Shirou Sagisu
Best Cinematography – Kousuke Yamada
Best Lighting Direction – Takayuki Kawabe
Best Art Direction – Yuji Hayashida & Eri Sakushima
Best Sound – Jun Nakamura & Haru Yamada
Best Editing – Hideaki Anno & Atsuki Sato
It's interesting to note that although Anno won the award for best screenwriter from Kinema Junpo, he was not nominated for that category by the Japanese Academy Awards. Instead he has opportunities to share awards with Shinji Higuchi and Atsuki Sato.
Also of interest is Shin Godzilla landing two names in the Supporting Actress category. While Mikako Ichikawa has been praised by both fans and critics for her portrayal as the stoic, laptop zoned Hiromi Ogashira, Satomi Ishihara's nomination for Kayoko Patterson has left some scratching their heads. However, Hiroki Hasegawa nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role is undoubtedly well earned.
Shin Godzilla has clearly made a positive impact on audiences and critics in Japan. Fans should be ecstatic that it will be considered for Best Picture and Director(s) for the Japanese Academy Awards. Congratulations to Hideaki Anno, Shinji Higuchi and their hard working cast and crew for the incredible cache of nominations and their unprecedented success.
The Japanese Academy Awards will take place March 3rd in Tokyo, Japan.
