Godzilla vs. Kong was on course to release in Japanese cinemas by May 14th, 2021 - but as a new report from Eiga suggests, that will no longer be happening. According to the news article, Godzilla vs. Kong's release date for Japan has been indefinitely delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Four of the most populated areas in Japan (Osaka, Kyoto, Hyogo, and Tokyo) have all entered a state of emergency due to the virus outbreak.
The state of emergency went into effect on April 25th and is slated to extend to May 11th. Despite the state of emergency supposedly ending 3 days before the date Godzilla vs. Kong was set to premiere, the film is still being benched until a later time.
Godzilla vs. Kong has faced some unfavorable odds thanks to Covid-19, but despite nearly half of North America's theater chains having closed, the film has still managed to surpass $400 million in box office revenue. The release in Japan was expected to bring in an additional $50 million. As we learn more we'll be sure to keep you updated! We wish the best for all of our friends and fans in Japan and hope they come out of this state of emergency safe and well!
