Godzilla vs. Kong Gets a New Release Date

Godzilla vs. Kong Gets a New Release Date

It looks like Godzilla vs. Kong will be arriving a little earlier--But not by a lot. Variety reports that the fourth entry in Legendary's Monsterverse has shifted its date from May 29th, 2020, to May 22nd, 2020.

The Memorial Day weekend opening is no stranger to the franchise. In 1998 Tri-Star launched (misfired?) the first Hollywood attempt at Godzilla from the same weekend.

The assumption could be made that the new date is a sign of confidence from Legendary. What do you think? Is the new release date a smart move by Legendary? Will more people potentially see the film on a long weekend? Sound off in the comments.

I guess that Memorial Day is a busy, fun time for a lot of people. They may want to unwind and relax by doing other things, but I'm happy with the release date. Since it comes out a week earlier than Memorial Day, people will have already known about the movie and may want to see it again for the holiday. Just my opinion though. Other than that, I'm perfectly fine with the release date, as long as they don't push it back.

It's a little difficult to feel one way or the other about the opening date for movie scheduled to open in 2020. But perhaps there's some logic to hoping for repeat business during Memorial Day weekend, especially that Monday. However, right now, with only 686 days to go, I'm more concerned about Godzilla 2: King of the Monsters.

@Jamaal, Agreed. I'll get excited about GvK after G:KOTM is out. Still, I'm excited in general that kaiju films, in particular Godzilla, are making a comeback.

that's just fine and all.. but there needs to be more info on the second movie. It seems like there is more focus on the third. Hopefully they will surprise us with the G sequel.. and it will be so awesome.. that people will beat a path to the theaters to see the third one.. with Kong. Kaiju films today.. should dominate the big screen.. because of all the years that have past and all the ways that improvements can be made in making a giant monster flick even better than in days of old. in my opinion.
