As of this weekend, Godzilla vs. Kong has reportedly earned a significant $357.8 million! Against the film's reported $200 Million cost figure, the film is already considered a financial success, bringing the Monsterverse franchise profits to a whopping $1.84 Billion so far! What's more impressive is that Godzilla vs. Kong is on track to beat its prequel, Godzilla: King of the Monsters at the global Box Office, despite releasing during a global pandemic where a vast number of theaters are still closed and while also having to share earnings with VOD streaming platforms! (which do not earn studios nearly as much).
For comparison, Godzilla: King of the Monsters which released in 2019 before the pandemic hit, managed to earn $386.6 Million globally. Now, the benefit to Godzilla vs. Kong is that there was little to no competition during its theatrical run, while Godzilla: KOTM did face off against a few competitors. GvK's only real hindrance is that it did release during a time where not many people are going out or are able to attend cinemas all over the world and any cinemas in operation were on reduced capacity, limiting the number of tickets that could be sold during each screening.
It's either quite impressive that Godzilla vs. Kong has done so well despite its odds, or it's sad to think Godzilla: KOTM fared so poorly during a pre-pandemic Box Office run. Regardless, it's great to see that Godzilla vs. Kong has done so well and has gained as much as it has so far for the Monsterverse franchise as a whole!
