It's official, following this weekend's monster success at the box office, Godzilla has earned enough revenue and potential that Legendary Pictures and Warner Brothers are already prepping for a sequel! Yesterday, we announced Godzilla's box office performance at $81.5 million from Thursday screenings to Friday's opening day.

Since Friday, Saturday's gross for the film has increased significantly, by adding an incredible $32.1 million on Saturday domestically, followed by an estimated $22.5 million for today (Sunday). Godzilla is expected to surpass $93.2 million domestically based on current trends. Paired with a foregn gross of $103 millionGodzilla will end his opening weekend at the box office extremely strong, with a projected $196.2 million orldwide gross!

Because of this monstrously successful opening, studios Legendary and Warner Bros. are already developing a sequel! The goal for this film was not to plan for sequels, as Gareth Edwards mentioned many times in interviews, but following such a strong opening, it's clear, people want more of the King of the Monsters.

Both Variety and Deadline reached out to Legendary about the sequel's potential, here are a few excerpts of what was said:

From Variety:

“It’s very validating,” Legendary president and chief creative officer Jon Jashni spoke to Variety of the film’s opening. “You can’t ask for a better situation when you have a group of people, who were perhaps expecting to be let down were impressed,” Jashni added. “It all lines up when that eco-system aligns and starts feeding off itself.”

Though in respect to the Warner-Legendary version’s franchise potential, Jashni said that was always part of the conversation.

“Our initial goal was to re-brand and re-establish the property in a Tiffany way,” Jashni said. “Now, we’re trying to take in all of the results of the weekend.”

From Deadline:

After opening to $103M internationally — the biggest opening of 2014 so far — and grossing $93M domestic stateside this weekend, it should come as no surprise that Legendary Pictures andWarner Bros.‘ are already developing a sequel to the monster hit. It was confirmed to Deadline this morning that a Godzilla sequel is underway. The beast is currently stomping across international markets to take No. 1 spots in most territories.

It's reassuring to know that Godzilla will get a sequel and that it's already in development. It's also reassuring to know that Gareth Edwards was able to change peoples' interpretations of what Godzilla is and bring a serious tone to the franchise, much like the 1954 original had done.

Everything about this Godzilla film is spectacular and we can't wait to see what comes next!

Special thanks to GMan for the heads up on the news. You can track Godzilla's box office performance daily, in this Godzilla forum thread here.

The King has returned and will return again. I hope they bring in other monsters such as Mothra, Anguirus, Rodan, Mechagodzilla, King Ghidorah and/or Gigan. I cannot wait.

@Evan, apologies. Recently, with the huge influx of news, I don't often check the forums first. I always check my emails before anything else. If I get a twitter notification also, I'll often times go straight to posting the news from there. I can't always guarantee I'll see your forum news post before I get a chance to log on and share the news myself on the blog. But thank you for sharing it earlier in the forums and keeping our members updated!

My understanding is, That Ledgendary is going to overlook the Pacific Rim Sequel, In favour of this, Due to Box office turnouts.

(Lets be honest, Pacific Rim bombed at the Box office, America is the key part Movie Makers look at. If it Bombs there, It's going to be sent else where for future development. Due to the lacking of Kaiju And Mecha Fans in america, A sequel may be just held in the Eastern Asian Area.)

I loved this movie and I would welcome Gareth back for a sequel. The atomic breath was freakin' awesome. I loved how his plates starte to glow near the end of his tail and moved up the back.. just pure joy watching that in and of itself.

RR44  that was said for maybe a guy or two in a pre screen, so that comments about godzilla's weight, could be less important right now, tho :)

I want a Pacific Rim sequel!!!

and I'm not sure if I would go back to the theaters to see godzilla ( whom I'm fooling about?, haha-- just to listen and see that **** roar in the screen I'd go to see the movie )

Considering how long it takes to make an American movie I'm not surprised they're going forward with a sequel as soon as the opening weekend results came in. I predict summer 2016. I have no doubt that they'll continue with their own monsters but they'd have more than enough extra ka ching to scoop up the rights to another Toho baddie. Put a new spin on Ghidorah. The space angle won't work so somehow make it connected to Godzilla. I'd love to see a hydra like Ghidorah that regrows two heads in place of one.

QUESTION!!!!

Godzilla was Legendary's last collaboration with Warner Brothers before they partnered with Universal, right?  It says Legendary and Warner's are developing the sequel, but shouldn't that be Legendary and Universal?  Are Legendary and Warner's still working togeher?  If the split does effect the Godzilla sequel, who takes the rights, Warner's or Legendary?

Okay, that was four questions...

@Danzilla93

Good question. It was do***ented that Godzilla was one of the last collaborations Legendary would have with Warner Bros., under the current financial partnership. Perhaps it is misinformation but I do know that Legendary scooped up the rights to Godzilla from Toho when it initially was announced that they would be developing a re-branding of the franchise for American audiences. Waner Bros. was simply a financial partner as Legendary put up 75% of the film's budget while Warner supplied the rest. Warner Bros. split the marketing costs with Legendary to promote the film. If Legendary continues to develop a sequel, my understanding would be that Legendary would once again fit the majority of the bill for the film's budget with Universal putting up the rest. Legendary ultimately has control over this property with the partnerships coming from just financials. Also I thought the Universal deal also included theme park collaborations and the like, a Godzilla 3D ride at Universal Studios would be awesome! I could be wrong in some of what I'm stating but this is what I gather from certain articles I've read.

On note to the sequel being developed...I am super excited for this! I loved the film. This teases and build up to the finale, I thought was very effective. With the sequel, my guess is they would have to go a more action-oriented route with more monster action and definitely more Godzilla. Reason for this being, in the reboot, they took a Jaws-like approach to the creature, showing him in only small bits and glimpses until the finale where literally "all hell breaks loose". As they have already shown their cards with Godzilla, this "teasing" game would not be as effective for a sequel because we have already experienced it and since we now see Godzilla in all his glory, there is no need to continue that style of filmmaking. It's a bit redudant. Hopefully more action ensues in the next one. I personally would love to see them secure the rights to some of the Toho classic foes like Ghidorah, Varan, Baragon, Gigan, Anguirus, Mothra, etc. Since they have established this new franchise on Earth with a "grounded" and "realistic" approach, it would be a little too fantastic to go the alien space invader route as Toho had many times in the original series (although I would love to see that). Also, maybe an angle with a military faction going rogue out to destroy Godzilla? MechaGodzilla? Akira Ifukube's original themes reworked or integrated into the end credits of the sequel? I apologize for the novel I'm composing here...I'm just a die-hard fan with an excitement hangover from this film. Any thoughts?! Go Go GODZILLA!

MemberMothra LarvaeMay-19-2014 6:06 PM

I think it's time Toho co-produced (or gave permission to use their monsters) with Legendary Pictures the next 28 (;) Godzilla films!

Just imagine a Gareth Edwards' reboot of Gigan, Ghidorah, Biollante, Jet Jaguar (hell why not?), Mothra (I guess), Anguirus, Rodan, monsters of Monster Island, all of them! (Gareth did tease with the idea of a "Destroy all Monsters" if he could-he-would kind of thing) okay I'll calm down now, my brother and I had a very in depth discussion about the possibilities thanks to how well Godzilla is doing at the box office.

And for all the people who hated on this film, I'm glad they did. Seperated us true fans from the hype-train enthusiasts who were dissapointed by "Not enough Godzilla" ha!

I remember before this film released the director was discussing how if he coudve bought right to another onster it wouve been king Ghidorah. However, hes veeerrryy expensive. He also said maybe a "destroy all monsters" approach. So who knows.

Man this is exciting. I, personally, want to see more original monsters because M.U.T.O. was AWESOME! Some of the oldies, too. Putting a little Pacific Rim action in there, too, might just cause me to throw the contents of my wallet more readily.

It was a decent flick. Wish it would have heald tighter to the original "Vishnu" trailer. That would have been one awesome movie...

KoldWarKid62

MemberBaragonMay-21-2014 6:48 AMThat's great news. However, I had read an interview with Gareth somewhere where he mentioned if he had the chance to work on a sequel, he would approach it with the same restraint he used in this one! Really? The cat's out of the bag, damn it. Let's see something! If that's the case, I'll be holding off seeing it until I've taken in several reviews.

Cool...just give us some more Godzilla screen time in the sequel. I get the "less is more" appoach of the 1st film, but I really hope, they won't pull this stuff in the sequel.

i heard the confirmation in the radio in sunday may 18! OMG EVEN THOUGH I HAVEN'T SEEN THE MOVIE YET(and i will see it in my b-day May 23,2014) I ALREADY KNOW THIS MOVIE IS GOING TO BE AWESOME!I CANT WAIT FOR THE SEQUEL!

I think having Bryan Cranston in this movie was a big part of its success. I hope they'll have some higher named actors for the sequel to bring back the crowd that aren't neccessarily Godzilla fans. It would also be weird if they had Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olson going back and forth from Avengers sequels and Godzilla sequels playing husband and wife and brother and sister. With that being said I believe the sequel will be even better than the first now that they got the introduction out of the way. I can't wait!

I saw it on Thursday night and loved it. This is the Godzilla I have always wanted to see ever since the '98 version (which would have been great had it been given a different name). I've watched 'Zilla ever since I was a kid. However, what I never understood was the fascination with Mothra. It's the least (and not favorite) of the monsters he's faced. King Ghidrah?  Now that's a monster I'd love to see in a sequel.

MemberMothra LarvaeMay-24-2014 9:18 AM

An idea for Legendary Could be to do a voting poll for people to choose which kaiju will be in previous sequels. But dont dispaly which kaiju are winning to still keep it a secret, and then slowly build up to it with the trailers and then finaly give us a big slap in the face with who it was. Just an idea i had and im also new to the community although i have been with it every step.
