Director of Godzilla 2: King of the Monsters, Mike Dougherty just shared a photo of a prop of of the infamous Oxygen Destroyer - the iconic weapon created by Dr. Daisuke Serizawa in the 1954 original Toho film - to Twitter. The capsule shown below contained "Micro Oxygen" an element which was discovered to have devastating capabilities when unleashed on living organisms. The result of being exposed to the Oxygen Destroyer rendered nearby living organisms to mere skeletons - which is exactly what happened to the original Gojira.
Sharing the photo to Twitter, Dougherty tagged the photo "Day 41", accounting for the 41st day of Godzilla 2's filming:
Does this insinuate that the Oxygen Destroyer will be devised in Legendary and Warner Brother's Monsterverse? Will it ultimately be used against Godzilla once again? We doubt it.
Since before the 2014 film, rumor had it that one of the contractual agreements made between Legendary and Godzilla rights owners Toho stipulated that Godzilla was not allowed to die in any of the films Legendary and Warner Bros. produce. Introducing the Oxygen Destroyer would introduce a means of killing Godzilla. What's more likely the case for the photo tease is merely to excite fans for the continued production on King of the Monsters and nothing more.
Alternatively, it could also be an insinuation that the Oxygen Destroyer is at some point in the film introduced or discussed - but due to the agreement with Toho - will not be used on Godzilla. Perhaps a Godzilla sympathizer manages to convince the government not to unleash the weapon on him, for fear of eradicating Earth's last line of natural defense against other-worldly threats (ie. Ghidorah).
Regardless of the intentions behind this teaser image, we're excited to see Dougherty continuously posting about the film on his social media channels. We'll be keeping a close eye on any future reveals, so be sure to keep your browsers locked to Godzilla-Movies.com as we move forward!
