Already facing stiff competition from summer 2018, which pit the King of the Monsters against the Bumblebee "Transformers" spin-off in the same weekend, Warner Bros has decided to delay Gareth Edwards' sequel to March 22, 2019.
This is undoubtedly disappointing news for fans who already have to wait an unusual amount of time for the sequel. Assuming no further bumps happen on the way, (such as the possibility of Skull Island flopping) this at least gives Edwards and his team ample time to perfect Godzilla 2.

Meanwhile, Warner Bros. has marked May 29, 2020 for Godzilla vs. Kong. 2020 has always been the target year; now Warner has set the epic match-up for early summer. In what will hopefully make up for the 5 year wait, fans will be getting two Godzilla movies within two years. The wait for his return after Godzilla 2 is a great deal shorter.
In the meantime, Godzilla: Resurgence will be released in Japan, July 29 this summer with New World Cinemas hopefully succeeding with a limited release in America some time after. Kong: Skull Island will be released March 10, 2017.
