Gareth Edwards to Direct Godzilla 2 and Godzilla 3!

Godzilla-Movies.com
By ChrisGodzillaPublished: May 22, 2014

Everyone has heard the big news that Godzilla director, Gareth Edwards has been hired on to direct the first Star Wars spin-off film, but what some may have overlooked is that the same article which announced the big news, also confirmed that Legendary has got Gareth Edwards locked in to direct not one Godzilla sequel but twoGodzilla 2 and Godzilla 3 (working titles) will both be directed by Edwards, following themonstrous success of the first one this past weekend.

Here's the excerpt from THR's article which mention the two sequels:

"WME-repped Edwards is attached to direct Godzilla 2 and 3, but while story ideas exist, the Godzilla 2 project is still in early development and does not even have a script."

Currently, Godzilla has made $112.8 Million domestically, with a world total of $216.2+ Million. Godzilla is a smash hit, the ultimate summer blockbuster and has put Gareth on the map as a highly bankable director in Hollywood.

We at Scified and Godzilla-Movies.com wish Gareth all the best and a huge congrats!

Be sure to keep it locked here for any and all updates on Godzilla 2 and Godzilla 3!

The article actually says he's only attached to direct. I hope he does end up doing the sequels though.

In other words, the teasing continues. It will be some time given his commitment to Star Wars

for a sequel to materialize. The time frame they are giving, reminds me of the time frame that kept shifting in the last 5 years.

I will say it again. Its a mistake for this guy to be doing Godzilla, his heart is in a different place.

Either your committed or your not and there are directors apparently who would have been. Some of course are too old, but, the commitment and heart are in the right place.

A sequel that can take any number of years, is not really a sequel in my view. The momentum will be lost and it becomes something else.

I'm disappointed it will take so long for the next Godzilla film. It's great news for Edwards and I'm sure he'll do great, but I was hoping for a Godzilla sequel sooner than later. It's probably for the best though. Hopefully he'll refine his skill with Star Wars and make a far greater Godzilla afterward because of it.

I thought Warner Bros had the rights to Godzilla?

Plus, the article says that Gareth Edwards is attached to Godzilla 2 and 3, not signed.

We won't get another Godzilla movie until, at least, 2017... it will probably be 2018, but maybe not until 2019.  By that time who knows who the director will be.

The studios will have a dilema: now that we have seen Godzilla in all its CGI glory, the general public may have quenched their curiosity.  The afterglow of Godzilla 2014 will probably take a hit, as the naysayers voice their opinion a little louder, while the supporters back off a little.  So, do the studios allocate the necessary funds that the movie needs or will they be conservative knowing that the sequel will probably not do as well (unless it is really a great movie).

ratedrex ›,

Yeah, I thought Warner was in control as well and would continue working with Legendary on this project. Its up to Warner Bros I believe.  I would say, its anyone's guess what the year the sequel would come. Its unusual it seems for a director to start work on another film right in the midst of a potential sequel. JJ Abrams did but he jumped ship for Star Trek, although, he will continue on as producer.

I always thought that the sequel would be in jeapordy as it stood, but time will tell.

I have to agree with TALISMAN besides that with GE being a young director/producer i dont think he wants one movie defining his whole big hollywood career.

Not if he uses the same style for 2 thay need to kick it up a notch for the next one and go all out for the third act but with 3 maybe 4 years between the two im hoping DELTORO or PETER JACKSON they owe deltoro foe scrapping PACIFIC RIM and jackson should be done with the hobbits's and one of them will get a crack at the king :D

I hope Star Wars will be an easy movie for him to direct. I would really like to see a sequel to godzilla. What I'd really like to see some of the classic monsters like the earth defenders; anguirus, rodan, mothra, baragon and a good king ghidorah. As for varan, king caesar, gorosaurus, manda I'd like to see them but wouldn't mind if they're not. As far as villains hedorah is confirmed but gigan, evil king ghidorahs, megalon and giant animals they are a must

I wonder If Legendary would do some kind of voting poll to choose what kaiju could be in the sequels, but dont show the one thats winnin most so you can slowly reveal who won in the trailers, it might be easier or harder to reveal but i hope they give it a shot.

The first sequel will be in theaters within 24 months. I can promise you that. They won't be so cautious this time around, and they'll pick up where they off, knowing now that they were doing things right all along. A script and schedule will likely be ready to go in 6 months.

What I would like to see in the sequal-

The world militaries try to hunt and kill him because they fear him. More monsters awaken after hearing the Muto's calls, after all Godzilla awoke to them. Maybe a hive mother of sorts, I really like the Muto's design. The world decides that Godzilla is a valueable asset and uses him to defeat the monsters. I want more background on these creatures, though, and more G!

Third movie. Another godzilla =)

I was hoping that they have the final movie where Godzilla turns into Super Godzilla fighting Bagan. Never seen Super Godzilla in real Epic Fight.
