Exclusive: First Look Inside 'Godzilla: The Art of Destruction'

Thanks to our friends at Insight Editions, we have an exclusive first look inside the upcoming 'Godzilla: The Art of Destruction' book which was announced earlier this year. The book features a ton of artwork used for the new movie. Below are four scans from the book, courtesy of Insight Editionsclick each one to view in a new window.

LEFT Dr. Brody monitors the crisis at the Janjira facility. BELOW The Janjira nuclear power plant control room was a daunting design challenge—everything from switches and gauges to signage and paperwork had to be created and accurately reflect a period Japanese nuclear facility. This piece of concept art set the look of the facility.

OPPOSITE LEFT AND ABOVE Concept art depicting the Q-Zone. “The great thing about haze and fog is that you can create beautiful, dark foreground silhouettes,” says Edwards. “It really gives a sense of scale and scope.” OPPOSITE BOTTOM RIGHT Q-Zone set dressing showing a weathered radiation warning sign.

RIGHT Concept art imagines the surreal effect of the giant monsters, such as this nuclear submarine dropped in the mountains. “I love this shot,” says Edwards. We struggled with trying to find a position for the submarine that didn’t feel too silly, but you could still read it from a distance. This is a shot that’s never in the film, they don’t actually approach it from the boat, but again, things get drawn just to give it flavor.”

That submarine shot is indeed amazing. It makes you wonder how it got there.

I'm glad I saw this before I started a discussion on it!  This is awesome!!!!!!!!  Four good images to choose, too!  Nothing too spoilery, although now we know Joe and Ford arive in the Q-Zone by boat to get into their abandoned home!  I was wondering how they were going to pull that off!

Thanks for the images, Chris!

I LOVE concept art! I love it because it not only allows you to compare the original ideas to the finished product, but also because concept art is practically an art style unto itself. I seriously cannot wait for this to come out!

This was awesome! I hope the production art is actually going to be in the film (especially the subamarine). The only thing that gives me a slight worry is when the D.P. said the film was very dark (as in lighting) and very smokey. I'm fine with having some Cloverfield-ish type hiding of the monsters in the beginning but I hope this isn't the case for the whole film.

The submarine shot looks awesome. Although it does look kind of out-of-scale. In case anyone missed it, the article said that shot won't be in the movie, although that submarine scene is still there, albeit shot differently.
