Do not doubt Kong: Mike Dougherty says Godzilla vs. Kong (2020) will be an underdog battle!

Don't think King Kong stands a chance against Godzilla in next year's King of the Monsters sequel, Godzilla vs. Kong? Think again.

Director of Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Mike Dougherty provided writing services for the Godzilla vs. Kong script and in a new interview with Bloody-Disgusting, he discusses the nature of Godzilla and Kong's fight. Mike alludes to the film being more of an underdog battle - giving Kong more credit than many of us have up until this point:

We’re looking at an almost David vs. Goliath situation. Because everyone, the moment you say Godzilla’s going to fight Kong, your first reaction is Kong doesn’t stand a chance. Godzilla’s got his radioactive breath, et cetera, et cetera. But then if you really take the time to look at Kong as a character, it’s like, okay, in Skull Island he was an adolescent, so he was still growing. So who knows how big he is since the 1970s when they first met him?

Dougherty goes on to explain the nature of Kong and Godzilla's rivalry:

You know, it’s like watching Rocky go up against Ivan Drago. It seems like it’s unfair but clearly, this means the underdog might have a few surprises.

Storywise, the hope is that their motivations for fighting each other are sound, and not contrived. But when you have two extremely hyper-aggressive masculine territorial animals who both believe that they’re the rightful rulers of an entire species, chances are they’re going to do more than have afternoon tea.

Rumor has it Godzilla and Kong won't be the only Monsters thrown into the ring, but Dougherty was reluctant to elaborate on that.

You can read the full interview over on Bloody-Disgusting!

It sounds like Kong will have some definite surprises up his sleeves when he goes toe to toe with Godzilla. Will his agility and ability to use tools be enough to take down the King of Monsters? After seeing what Godzilla was capable of in King of the Monsters, can Kong match Godzilla's ferocity and resilience? Let us know what you think below!

So basically they're going to be doing lots of asspulls to make Kong able to do anything to Godzilla. Underdog or not, what can Kong do to Godzilla? Godzilla fell from the Stratosphere, tanked the Oxygen Destroyer,  fought an amped Ghidorah, and his own clashes with Ghidorah cause Shockwaves. Speed, thumbs, and slightly higher than normal intelligence isn't enough to give Kong a win against Godzilla after what we've just witnessed. Godzilla will be holding back. Nuff said.

The whole premise has one major problem, it's gonna piss off Godzilla and Kong fans if eiher wins. Kong fans will be angry if Godzilla wins. And of course, Godzilla fans will not be thrilled if the Big G loses to Kong.

Godzilla is probably older than Kong, since he's a reptile with a Dinosaurian-esque posture (still more vertical) and dates from the Permian. Gorillas only evolved in the Cenozoic, so Godzilla must have MUCH more experience than Kong, especially since Kong was an adolescent still in Skull Island. Godzilla wins, if not from his abilities, from his experience.

Wait a minute, I thought the director of the film said in an earlier interview (and mentioned in an earlier post on scified) that Godzilla and Kong would be evenly matched? Why an underdog fight? I want to see them on equal footing.

I don't want Kong to win just because he's the "underdog" of the battle.

Kong will win and absolutely destroy this universe worse than kotm did. What a bomb. No one cares about Godzilla.

Bullshit! I love Godzilla with all my heart and soul! They Fucked over Ghidorah, they Fucked over Khaleesi and two Dragons, and they Fucked over Lizzie with that donkey Kong George. Fucking Hollywood dicks Killed our Lord Draco and every other Reptile hero we had from the Beast from 20000 fathom to fucking over Rodan with Mothra. I have no doubt they are going to Fuck us dead here with the Kong dong but the truth is King Kong ain't got shit on Godzilla! They hold all the cards, have all the money and will kill who ever they want. Kong is my greatest fear no doubt because Hollwood has his back and Doughboy don't give a fuck, we are on fucking Kongs turf and he is the good guy. Fuck! Kick his ass Godzilla! I'll make a fan film to ensure your victory my Dragon Lord!

CAUTION: KING OF THE MONSTERS SPOILERS

Dougherty stated in a previous interview that he was hoping to bring destroyah back into the ring and we know that at the end of King of The Monsters that a certain someone has the head of Ghidorah. Because Ghidorah can regenerate body parts, and this means we might get to see Mecha-King Ghidorah. If either of the two previously mentioned kaiju return, it would make Godzilla vs Kong, a Batman v Superman type movie where both Godzilla and Kong would team up to fight the greater foe at the end of the movie, which wouldn’t be surprising and would make both Godzilla and Kong fans happy.

He also said there will be a clear winner though, so there is going to still be some stir in the communities, even though they probably won't die.

Honestly I don't see how they can make Kong win AND have a satisfactory ending. I'm a Godzilla fan, but c'mon, it be unfair even to Kong fans if they just make him strong as fuck with no explanation or make him win just because.

I'm rooting for them fighting together against revived Guidorah, as that would make more sense (Kong only won in 62 because Godzilla was a villain at the time, seems weird to see 'good guys' fight)

OK, I'm new here so forgive me if this theory has been discussed before but, there has been a disturbing lack of "King" preceding Kong's name in the Monsterverse films and KotM put clear emphasis on how important a "King" figure is for the Titans. I think it's pretty obvious that Kong is going to earn his "King" in GVK.

I do like the idea of a Batman V Superman style "battle turned team up" against a greater evil and I think there are going to be some other key players we're not going to know about until closer to the time, but the confirmation that there's going to be a clear victor means some people are going to get pissed off no matter what they do.

My concern, is the size , to me Kong would have to be bigger , stronger , faster and quicker than Godzilla to stand a chance. Unless he has developed a resistance to extreme heat through the years.

Jeez Kong won't be able to defeat Godzilla Kong is shit compared to Godzilla. Godzilla is 999999999999999999999999.9999% of my life and if Kong Wins my life would be ruined unless there was a sequel to that and Godzilla made a comeback but still if Kong Wins well the Monsterverse would actually be over cause Godzilla and his friends and enemies are the real thing that's keeping the Monsterverse thriving is Godzilla and those fan made things like Godzilla and Mothra or King Ghidorah and Biollante. But Kong sucks shit compared to Godzilla the real king and Kong is the only thing that can lose to almost everything shit Zilla could beat him. He's one of things that goes in the shit pile with hedorah and ebirah and gabbera. They all suck like shit. Godzilla is my soul my life is dedicated to him the real king.

The only way Kong wins is because it is an underdog story, and godzilla is probably going to be nerfed in this movie. I hope niether die though, you can have a winner without them killing each other.

By 2020 roughly 50 years will have passed since we last saw Kong. Even in the 70's when he was an adolescent we've seen his intelligence, quick thinking skills (realizing he had a makeshift flail when he was taking on Ramarak), speed and agility, and of course his tremendous strength on full display. Now, give that skillset we saw in K:SI 50 years to grow and mature!

Look, I've seen much more Godzilla movies than Kong movies, I prefer the Big G over ANYONE in the DaiKaiju/Tokusatsu space, but if nothing else you have to at least relent that Kong is a Match for Godzilla. Just a match! You don't have to think he'll win out but if you're writing him off completely then I feel like blind loyalty and nostalgia is clouding your judgement my friends.
