Okay, whatever floats your goat. Or is it boat? I not sure.
(GASP!)I didn't know that!
We already know that there are scenes being shot in Hong Kong, so that's pretty much confirmed.
G. H. (Gman) It didn't bother me as much as other movies I've seen. For instance, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. I rolled my eyes every time they did stuff like "US President Questions Whether Dinosaurs Ever Existed In The First Place", or how one of the characters literally says "What a nasty woman", super on the nose stuff like that.
"I just don't think King of the Monsters crafted a very consistent story around it's choice of theme."
Eh, agree to sorta disagree.
Monster_Zero 2112 That's not politics. That's just the folly of man at play.
The politics I mean was the government trying to kill the Titans and taking the situation into their own hands, and then making it worse by killing Godzilla before he could finish Ghidorah off.
JurassicKaiju14,
The environmental themes are very politically charged. I think almost every movie these days has some sort of socio-political issue(s) to tackle, I just don't think King of the Monsters crafted a very consistent story around it's choice of theme.
NOOOOOO!!! NOT THE BACON! WHYYY?! What's next? Fruit Loops? I can't imagine a world without Fruit Loops. Or Pop-Tarts.
Monster_Zero 2112 Politics? What politics? KOTM was one of the most politics-free movies I've seen recently. The only thing that comes close to politics is all the environmental stuff and the folly of man and whatnot, but that kind of messaging has been a part of the franchise from almost the beginning.
I just hope that it really doesn't have a LOT of politics in it, because that was the only down part of KOTM.
Well said. Well said indeed.
Moldovan0731 There's always room for improvement. Some times lots of it. I personally thought KOTM's ideas were sound, it was just some of the execution and the details (such as the dialogue) that bugged me. Still loved it, though.
All I hope is that it will be better than KOTM. I'm among those who think nothing was good about KOTM except for the monster scenes (except for the part where Mothra magically protected Godzilla by dying on top. of him).
If Kong gets into waist deep water, the tables could change pretty quickly. A nuclear blast from Godzilla should be devastating too.
Many people are forgetting that this Godzilla is not comic or Toho Godzilla. He does not have the feats or speed and strength of those Godzilla’s. This Godzilla was almost killed on multiple occasions against other titans and required help to win most of them. Kong is faster, more agile, and has more intelligence than Godzilla. While Godzilla is not stupid, he locals the mental capacity to craft a weapon like Kong did when he made the chain blades. Godzilla is more primal, following his instincts. Close combat I’m giving it to Kong because he is all around a better fighter and will be using every building or thing he can get as a weapon. Distance wise, Godzilla. While Kong can throw objects with incredible accuracy like he when he threw a tree like a spear and hit a helicopter with no problem, that atomic breath will be a major problem and he won’t be able to properly hurt Godzilla. If Kong keeps it close range and avoids major hits, he can win. Now if Godzilla pulls his fire state out, then he loses. That won’t happen because their needs to some specific things to happen and Mothra is not around to make one of them happen. This is base Godzilla vs base Kong and I’m going to have to give it to Kong.
this comment might have accidentally gotten too close to real world politics so I edited it.
I think it was that incident that convinced Emma that humans are the real monsters. :)
Madison has chosen death with her mistreatment of bacon.
We will not forget the true hero of this movie....
R.I.P. Bacon
Titan of Water "a problem I have with Emma isn’t really her plan since she’s supposed to be a grey character but for some reason she came off as whiny in some scenes."
Agreed. If I was doing the movie (and I hope to do this in my rewrite), I'd probably have it so that she's a little more bitter and cold all the way up until Ghidorah takes control. Then she starts to break down. I'd also make it more clear that her thing is that she blames humanity for waking up Godzilla in the first place, who in turn killed Andrew.
a problem I have with Emma isn’t really her plan since she’s supposed to be a grey character but for some reason she came off as whiny in some scenes. I don’t know if it was just bad acting or what
Titan of Water Because for half the movie she looks like she's about to gush tears like a leaky fire hydrant.
I disagree, what makes you think Godzilla's slow, he can move nearly as fast as Kong, just not in the classic movies due to him being a man in a 200 pound rubber suit, how about getting back to me after reading Godzilla: Rulers of Earth, but Godzilla is stronger, Kong's strong, but Godzilla undeniably overpowers him, also... Atomic Breath + Burning Godzilla + Possible Spiral Beam, and don't pull the intelligence card, Godzilla's smart too, if they do fight, Godzilla would win, although Kong is underdog and everyone loves an underdog story, so they'd probably make Kong win through writing instead of realism, or Mecha King Ghidorah, or Mechagodzilla, or Mechanikong (less likely, but still possible)
Why do you imagine a faucet in her cheek?
Thanks. Did Lazy Fish get my message I sent him.
Yo Titan, thats a sick profile pic.
I became a mega G fan shortly after seeing the 2014 film. I'm not too good at explaining things, but I've always been fascinated with giant monsters; It really helps me escape.
dk Well, thank you for taking the time to read this. I hope to be back with Part 2 sometime soon.
ThiccolasCage First off, welcome to the site!
And second, Gman is right. The one you watched is the 1998 Roland Emmerich disaster.
Trust me, Godzilla 2000 is a lot better. It isn't the best Godzilla movie in existence, but I think it's a pretty good film, and I think it's a decent way to introduce newcomers to the franchise.
I agree that the goal to entertain is one many blockbusters aspire, but I don't think merely being entertaining denotes good quality. I'm wholly entertained by Alien vs. Predator, but it's anything but good. And in this particular case, I found the 1998 disaster as stale and boring as most action flicks of the decade--So I can't relate to that.
G. H. (Gman) Answer: It was a good pop corn flick to introduce my daughter to who didn't understand the concpt but loved dino action movies. Yeah- I didn't like the romance elements- but that seems to have been a theme with 80s and 90s flicks in general. Even the original JP looks silly to me now but it was huge and cool in its day.
It's a good movie because you can just sit back and enjoy some good action. Every movie doesn't have to be a mind bending exercise in analyzing how faithful it is to a certain canon. Movies should entertain. Some times it is as simple as that.
dk,
Actual question: How is it a good movie? Even taking the Godzilla title out of the equation, it's a blueprint for every bad 1990s blockbuster cliche, from shoehorned romance to elevate the lead protagonist, to bad, petty humor like the Mayor Ebert character. It has more in common with the commercialized schlock of Armageddon than anything.
And the Jurassic Park comparisons border desperate plagiarism more than homage.
BS- 1998 was a good movie but I can see how and why purists wouldn't like it. Remember it came out when JP was on fire at the time and the 98 makers seemed to want a piece of that pie. I just hated that Zilla died in that movie. It was a nice pop corn flick- nothing wrong with that.
ThiccolasCage Welcome!
ThiccolasCage,
Welcome to the forum, but wrong movie, yo.
This is Godzilla 2000:
This is the dumpster fire you're talking about. It came out in 1998:
Hi, first post here. Always heard bad things about 2000, but just viewed it 2 days ago for the first time to gain my own opinion.
Besides the actual design of Godilla that people were freaking out on, the movie made some critical tropes that were all too familiar for that time period. How does someone steal your video evidence and you just magically fall back in love again once they say sorry? That's the main thing that annoyed me, the pressure to have a happy-go-lucky romance shine through some major red flags of continuous manipulation patterns . Trying to keep it vague to avoid spoilers to those whom haven't seen it.
Godzilla himself wasn't all too terrible, it was cool how they lured him out/ gave him a "caring" personality after seeing his babies die, but besides that he is as generic as most monsters come. I think even Rugrats made Reptar a little more interesting than that.
That is a nice breakdown and took some time to put together! I need to give it another watch as well since I had some issues but ultimately thought it was a great movie.
My basic initial breakdown was observing it in 3 parts (BTW- I only watched it because the forum insisted I do so when I asked if it was worth watching):
First part- Massive creature action and almost no character development.
Second part- Creatures went to the background and characters/plot really developed.
Third part- With everything in place and feeling engaged, it was all out and I cared about both the creatures and humans.
I appreciate the time you took to lay it all down in detail with some asides and humor. Thanks- upvoted!
Looks good, I guess. I kinda liked the old one better, but that's just me.
