crocodiles don't have gills yet they spent much more of their life in or under water than on land.
i'm all for a story that digs into the nature of atomic mutation and maybe we could see the alleged monster island sequel being a kind of laboratory of genetic science. maybe Rodan could be a mixed from some strange Aztec bird combined with current DNA strains. creating several intersting variations. 3 headed space monsters could simply be 3 head monsters that nobody knows their origin of, they just turned up and wreaked havoc.

I think you might be overselling the "critical acclaim" for The Amazing Spider-Man a little. Although it was reviewed okay, there are a lot of audiences that gave it the cold shoulder. Plus looking at boxoffice turn-outs isn't enough. Tickets were cheaper when the first few Spider-Man movies came out. Did you know if you adjust for inflation, The Amazing Spider-Man would've made around $120 million less than Spider-Man 3? That's a massive audience drop and a lack of interest from potential movie goers which is why Sony was on the fence about a sequel. This doesn't mean The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will do poorly, I just don't think it will do much better than the last one-- which has been the trend for that franchise since the first movie in 2002. Now it's true it won't have to contend with The Dark Knight Rises or The Avengers next year, but then again neither will Godzilla.
As for the Oz movie, I'm not convinced. The last Oz movie (which was live action) didn't make its budget back domestically. Sure it did overseas, but it wasn't exactly a box office smash. I'm not sure if being animated will help matters either. More and more animated movies are tanking these days: Turbo, Mars Needs Moms, Astroboy and Rise of the Guardians highlight some of the worst boxoffice bombs in recent history. It seems like if an animated movie is going to be successful it needs to be a Pixar flick, an established Dreamworks Animation property or really lucky...
Interesting side note on pending boxoffice guesses, SuperHeroHype.com recently ran a poll for what the most anticipated movies of 2014 were. Remember, this is website that primarily gets traffic from fans of comic book superhero movies.
X-Men: Days of Future Past 35.1%
Captain America: The Winter Soldier 18.4%
Guardians of the Galaxy 14.8%
The Amazing Spider-Man 9.2%
Godzilla 6.2%
The Hobbit: There and Back Again 4.2%
Interstellar 3.5%
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3%
RoboCop 2.4%
Transformers: Age of Extinction 2.2%
300: Rise of an Empire 1%
Big Hero 0.2%
Now because this is a website mostly visited by fans of DC and Marvel movies, it's natural that all the superhero movies would be at the top of the list. But the interesting part is that Godzilla is the top rated non-superhero movie on the poll. It even beat out The Hobbit and Transformers. Not bad on a site like that.

To the comment above me, Dinosaurs nor any reptile for that matter cannot breathe underwater. They have to resurface at one point to replenish O2. Even sperm whales who dive to incredible depths need to resurface. If an animal is to live all it\'s life underwater in the abyssal zone, they require gills. I\'m a biology student. I hated the 98\' as much as every Godzilla fan. And don\'t worry, if they are going to realistically put gills on, it should be unnoticeable because gills are supposedly placed behind the jaw, hopefully, and not on the neck or behind the ears like Kevin Costner's in Waterworld.

Yes unfortunately Godzilla movie's have had bad story plots in general, but I think coming up with a good story for Godzilla is extremely hard, and something I want to see how Legendary does.
Godzilla is like every superhero, without their everyday persona. This makes it so you have to focus on a human that isn't directly related to Godzilla for most of the movie until he shows up. This is extremely hard to do when the main selling point in the monster. It's like making a Batman movie but not having the Bruce Wayne character to substitute in when batman's not on screen. You basically have to pretend these side characters are important until the main guy comes in.
Bryan Cranston said the upcoming movie is very character driven, but that means story wise it will either work really well and show a way that you can do a story with Godzilla, or it will fail and because it's so character driven be extremely boring for 90% of the film.
On the bright side most of the reboots do fairly well story wise since it's the first time the monster appears so you can heavily focus on origins and backstory, and be about the main character Godzilla without him being on screen to keep you occupied but if there is a sequel it will be interesting to see how they work the storyline in.

@True American Godzilla
"Realistically, Godzilla would need gills to survive in the water."
No he doesn't, Godzilla never needed any gills before, so why now? Let's not forget that Godzilla is a dinosaur, and if you look back to his ancestors, there are a lot of types of dinosaurs that can breath underwater WITHOUT THE USE OF GILLS!!! The underwater breathing mechanism is probably inside of Godzilla's nose, that's why he was able to stay down there for so long without any problems. Giving Godzilla gills is pretty much useless.
BTW, those things you call "gills" on his neck aren't really gills, those are scales that HAPPENS to look like gills.
ReplyInstinctiveGiganGodzilla 2014 ForumWhy Toho Shouldn't Make Anymore "Old Fashioned" Godzilla FilmsOct 23, 2013
@DURP004 All excellent points, I hope you are right. But it's not so much the effects I'm worrying about with the old Toho films, for pete's sake the original 1954 Godzilla film can still hold up. But Toho hasn't been very good at story telling. Other than the Godzilla scenes where the guy beats the crap out of the monster the title says he's fighting, there isn't much there. The human parts are mere boring transitions between Godzilla scenes. In my opinion anyway.
Godzilla Final Wars is a very prime example of that. That film was Toho's way of celebrating 50 years of Godzilla (their highest budgeted and most cinematic Godzilla film to date) and besides the first 5 minutes and final 30 the movie is a stinker.
ReplyMrAwesomeness360Godzilla 2014 ForumRealism in 2014 Godzilla DiscussionOct 23, 2013
You people are misunderstanding about the realism of Godzilla, some of it out of fear (which is understandable) that no one wants 1998 all over again.
The realism of Godzilla is that:
1. He's SYMBOLICALLY AND METAPHORICALLY realistic, in terms of what he represents, which is #2.
2. Godzilla represents nuclear weapons, the original stood for that, and so will this one. He represents how much devastation a nuclear weapons can cause.
3. Godzilla also represents the destructive and unstoppable powers of nature, like a tornado, an earthquake, a volcanic eruption and a tsunami, and how he attacks is like how a natural disaster would. The power of nature is something that you cannot stop, and Godzilla represents that very well.
4. Last, but not least, like "Gojira", it asks the question "What IF Godzilla was real?", "How DO we deal with such a thing in real life?"
All those things are what makes Godzilla realistic.

I don't think there's anything wrong with toho getting their rights back and doing their own movies, as chances are they wouldn't be released in the US theatrically like most of the movies. Basically what would happen best case scenario for me is this movie does well and gets as many sequels as possible, which will probably be a trilogy. Then toho gets their rights back and goes back to making their own movies for those of us that still want more.
Granted a lot of the new fans wouldn't like it, but as they delve deeper into the character and watch the 28 movies that came out before this 1 and any sequels they'd hopefully realize this is just part of the character. Hopefully toho will adapt and upgrade but personally I don't see that much wrong with suit actors, and if your budget isn't ridiculously high like the mainstream hollywood movies the CGI you get looks worse anyway. The real problem I'd see with complaints in the voice over as no matter how well toho's done it in the past it's still blatantly obvious its dubbed.

Well to be fair being the lowest grossing spiderman isn't exactly a bad thing as the 3 prior movies did amazing at the box office, even breaking records. That and while that was a reboot this is a sequel and after good reviews from both fans and critics of the first movie I think it will do much better. That and the dark knight isn't coming out later in the month of its release.
The wizard of oz hasn't had any real publicity yet, but from what I understand it is animated and unfortunately for Godzilla those are the other types of movies that are doing very well right now. It's also attached to the OZ name which will probably bring a decent crowd if only for that.
I'm not sure about the disney movie as I wasn't interested enough in it to look it up besides the fact it was another movie coming out in the same month.
From what I see though a lot of big names are being released in May, and unfortunately most have bigger names than Godzilla. We all know that name matters more than content unfortunately for a lot of people so even if it does okay those are all still titles that will take away potential profit that could have been made had it been released on another date.

I don't really care how realistic it is as long as it's a good movie. The Dark Knight is probably one of the most realistic movies in the superhero genre, but it's fantastic. Likewise, The Avengers isn't "realistic" at all, but it's a wonderful movie as well.
It comes down to what works best, which I know is obvious, but a good movie is a good movie. And that's really what I care about the most.

As I read these, in some ways I can deal with it. For example the gills, I honestly won't mind that, it makes sense for Godzilla to live in Water for most of his life. However what I don't want to see is the gills being noticed constantly, even if they do an underwater scene. The Atomic Breath, in a way I like how it's put out, Godzilla has shown in previous films he is capable of using it underwater, but I fear it won't look anything iconic. With focusing on realism, they got to do it right, this is Toho's second chance of letting an American Film company handle their monster. So far, even with the trailer and the leaked image (shown at the top) I still think they're doing the right thing in handling him. Even if there happens to be minor mistakes, at this point it's already better than the '98 film just because by now it looks like Godzilla. But will it be more entertaining? That question can only be answered in time.

@Chris
One thing I want to add, unfortunately, is Japan may not give Godzilla a massive opening. One of the reasons Toho isn't making Godzilla movies anymore (maybe the reason) is because there isn't a demand for giant monster movies anymore.
The daikaiju genre is pretty much on life-support with Ultraman hanging on by a thread. Kamen Rider and Super Sentai (Power Rangers) are currently the most successful outlets in the genre.
Daikaiju and the art of tokusatsu filmmaking is dieing and audiences don't have a desire to see it done in their country or others. For example, Pacific Rim tanked hard in Japan. Again this could've been because of the poor advertising, but then again Japan's interest in giant monster movies have been on a decline since Godzilla 2000 was released in 1999: Godzilla x Megaguirus, Gamera the Brave and Godzilla Final Wars flopped badly at the Japanese box office. Meanwhile, Godzilla 2000 and Godzilla: Tokyo SOS performed below Toho's expectations.
I think the genre was rammed down the audience's throats through too many outlets for too many years. Although, I think China is a strong outlet. They seem to dig these giants taking on each other seeing as Transformers: Dark of the Moon and Pacific Rim did very well at the Chinese box office.
But I hope I'm wrong. I'd like Godzilla to be a powerhouse in his home country again.

This is an awesome discussion, you definitely know your stuff. I actually do hope Godzilla still has his regenerative powers. It's understandable that it would'nt be realistic, but the movie's gonna be about a 400 ft tall dinosaur who breathes atomic breathe, I think it's safe to say we can believe this Godzilla can have regenerative powers.
In addition there are creatures in real life with regenerative powers, like lizards/sea stars that can regrow limbs and body parts, even deer can regrow broken antlers; you could apply this to Godzilla's armor. If the guy can still breath atomic rays, I think it's safe to say he can heal wounds quickly. After all I wouldn't imagine a Godzilla without regeneration surviving very long with just a thick hide, we'd just launch armor piercing missiles at him and he'd be done. No fun.

I didn't even know about the Disney movie and the Oz movie. The real threats are X-Men and Spider-Man, but it's not like either franchise have been doing what it used to do. The Amazing Spider-Man sold less tickets than the previous three films. It made $70 million less domestically than the weakest performing Spider-Man movie, Spider-Man 3.
X-Men is somewhat in the same boat. X-Men: First Class was the fifth weakest selling X-Men movie, both domestically and worldwide. Making over $20 less than X-Men Origins: Wolverine (which was only a solo X-Men outing) and over $10 million less than the first X-Men which was released over 13 years ago. Tickets cost less then.
Meanwhile, The Wolverine made $15 million less than First Class, which is not what Fox was hoping for considering X-Men Origins: Wolverine was such a massive hit.
The difference is that X-Men: Days of Future Past is much bigger movie than the prior two X-Men movies. There's a chance getting the original cast together with the First Class cast will generate more buzz. But, like Godzilla, Days of Future Past hasn't been advertised either. Very few people know it's a movie crossing over two casts and some don't even know it's coming out. (Like Godzilla. That will change for both movies in the coming months.)
Potentially, I think X-Men Days of Future Past is the biggest threat. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is as well, but I'm not as afraid of it as X-Men. The fact is the new Spider-Man had a very lukewarm reception and there was even talk of scrapping the sequel because it performed so much weaker than its predecessors. I see it doing about the same amount of business the last one did.
One thing that Godzilla, X-Men and Spider-Man all have going for each other is the fact that they're some of the first big, blockbuster movies of the season. One of the reasons that Pacific Rim, The Wolverine and Riddick underperformed is because Iron Man 3, Man of Steel and Star Trek into Darkness came first. And even Star Trek underperformed, because Iron Man 3 made a billion dollars so quickly. There's only so much money to go around and for the most part, this year at least, the early summer movies cannibalized the others. Especially Iron Man 3...
I'm happy Godzilla is coming out a lot earlier than Pacific Rim did.

Personally I'm not a fan of this realism, and here's why. David Goyer who wrote for most of this movie and has written for a few other movies so based off his past work the realism idea is suspended enough that the main character can be seen, but anything outside those bounds if off limits. This means space monsters, magic, and mechs will be out of the question leaving only the mutants as other potential monsters without back story changes.
The realism will also have to encompass his beam making in probably a lot weaker than it has been for the last few installments which I'm okay will as I've said before I'd like to see a fight reminiscent of Godzilla raids again that actually looks like monsters fighting, but I know a lot of the fan will probably not be as happy.
The military will have to have a lot more effect. Even if the monster has extremely hard skin the level our military power is at at the current time is also ridiculous and while it's a basic staple of Godzilla movies for the monster to shrug off military attacks from a realistic perspective it wouldn't be that easy, and they would have to have some effect, whether that be wounding or just driving away the monsters.
The main characters will also be quite difficult to fit into this realistically, and have them at least matter. For the most part it follows a marine, with his wife and a scientist, but realistically none of these characters would be able to even come close to godzilla, as the radiation he would put out would borderline fatal making me wonder what makes them so special that I should care besides maybe Bryan Cranston's character as the scientist.
The realism that is put in this movie has to be very small, only encompassing certain aspects if they really want to have this be a good movie. It's godzilla so the fact they're doing at all just because it seems to be a trend right now is something I'm not a fan of.
Hopefully the realism ends with how the characters and society copes with the monster attacks rather than going for the full out this is realistically what would happen if a giant radiation breaking monster appeared.

Although Gareth has stated this Godzilla will be slightly taller, you have to wonder just how much that is. Is it 350 ft? Doubt it. Maybe 375 ft? Sounds more like it. I'd personally love if this Godzilla reached 400 ft. It'd just be awesome to have that label, I want Godzilla to be gigantic; big enough for escape to seem impossible for true terror, but small enough to still be beside buildings.

I dunno, even as a kid, Godzilla ALWAYS took precedence over any Super Heroes, no matter which it was. With the tone Edwards and company are going for with Godzilla 2014, it will tailor to both younger audiences as well as older ones.
Yes, Godzilla will have some stiff competition, but I think the public will very soon grow tired of all these super-hero movies being jammed down our throats. So, my money is on Godzilla.
Remember too, Godzilla's opening in Japan - will be HUGE. Will probably blow Spider-Man 2 and the next X-Men film clean out of the water.

Gareth Edwards stated that this Godzilla will be only a hair taller than the tallest official Godzilla (which is 100 meters tall). Your best bet for his height in this movie would be 110-120 meters tall.
The Marvel Godzilla is NOT a real Godzilla. In fact, it wasn't even close to 600 feet tall! The official stats for the monster on Marvel Wiki say that it is only somewhere between 20,000 tons and 60,000 tons. Marvel Godzilla is NOT the biggest Godzilla

Depending on how the American Godzilla does this time around, will in effect Godzilla\'s future. As I have told some Godzilla fans at work, I expect the movie to do as well here like Pacific Rim did if not slightly better due to the name, but really take off in countries like Japan. If things tank with this new movie, then we are liable to see another round of movies made by TOHO like they did when the Tri-Star Godzilla crashed and burned.
If Toho starts making Godzilla movies again I personally would love to see a movie in which we have a worthy Godzilla vs Godzilla, Japanese vs American. I would not want them to use any of the following monsters because they have been over used: Mothra, King Ghidorah, Mecha-Godzilla, Rodan, Angilas (who is my second favorite), Gigan who is on the verge of being over used. I would like to see TOHO use some of the lesser used monsters like Ebirah, Hedorah, Varan, maybe see Space-Godzilla and Destoroyah return, and finally bring Bagan to life. I at least would like to see another long running series like the Showa where the lesser monsters are used, and if Mechas have to be used, have them in the very last movie. I mean there is what, including Mechani-Kong in King Kong Escapes, 8 movies in which Kaiju fight mecha and now there is Pacific Rim and Pacific Rim 2 in the works. I dont want to see another Mecha for a good while.
As for the suit comments, I am praying that they use a suit for this movie, I will be slightly disappointed if they didnt, but I realize that the suit-actor era has pretty much ended with Godzilla Final Wars and Gamera the Brave. Like Gojira signified the end of Stop-motion, so did the Tri-Star Godzilla signify the beginning of the end of suit acting which, barely used a suit in the movie (like when Zilla comes through the pavement for the first fish-bait trap and a couple other scemes) and culminated with King Kong, Dragon Wars, and Cloverfield. Its just alot cheaper to use CG. Whether TOHO themselves use CG when they barely have IMO, will remain to be seen.
