True American Godzilla

I've ben keeping an eye on the Box Office numbers at http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=godzilla2012.htm of the 2014 Godzilla. As many of you know, high box office numbers does a great movie not make. Look at the 1998 'Godzilla' (aka American Zilla) Box Office numbers..

'Godzilla' {1998}---Box Office: $379,014,294 [Budget: $130 million]

Recently, the 2014 American Godzilla has just BEATEN this number (and the majority of fans love the new Godzilla/film). This is considering that this film HASN'T EVEN HIT JAPAN THEATERS!

Godzilla {2014}---Box Office: $379,095,000 [Budget $160 million] (so far as of 20140606)

For a comparison of Japanese made Godzilla films (these were the highest Box Office numbers, rest are lower)....

Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S. {2003} [Budget: ???]
Box Office: $12,000,000

Godzilla: Final Wars {2004} [Budget: $19,500,000]
Box Office: $12,000,000

Godzilla 2000: Millennium {2000} [Budget: $8,300,000]
Box Office: $15,000,000

Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla {2002} [Budget: $8,500,000]
Box Office: $16,000,000

The Return of Godzilla {1984} [Budget: $6,250,000]
Box Office: $16,700,800

Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla 2 {1993} [Budget: $9,500,000]
Box Office: $18,000,000

Godzilla vs Destoroyah {1995} [Budget: $10,000,000]
Box Office: $18,000,000

Godzilla vs Mothra {1992} [Budget: ???]
Box Office: $20,000,000

Godzilla vs SpaceGodzilla {1994} [Budget: $10,300,000]
Box Office: $20,000,000

Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack {2001} [Budget: $9,400,000]
Box Office: $20,000,000

i think it has to do with the fact of this was one of the recent monster movies to come out in a long time...In addition to it being Godzilla. I didn't know it hadn't hit Japanese theatres yet, but i'm sure it will be #1 at the box office there for sure!

Dont forget it has yet to be released in China too in one week.

and wow the marking in  japan seems to be much better than the marketing in america.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but your use of $379 million earned by Godzilla 1998 to compare with Godzilla 2014 is flawed as you have not taken into account the adjusted inflation gross. In the US box office, Godzilla 98's $136 million gross is the equavalent of $231 million earnings today, beating Godzilla 2014 which currently stands at $179 million.

And even now there is still doubt if Godzilla can eventually hit $220 million in the US because sales levels have already plummeted faster than expected if you realized and Godzilla is already down to #4 in the box-office list. Godzilla 2014 opened with a promising start, but the negative reactions from the first wave of audiences are affecting its next wave of sales momentum. Comparatively, X-men Days of Future Past, despite opening one week later than Godzilla, has already breached the $500 million mark worldwide.

If we take into account the combined total earnings of Godzilla 1998 adjusted for inflation, this translates to a total of $643 million today. Godzilla 2014 needs to do exceptionally well in China in order to breach the overall $500 million mark to begin with. To picture this realisticlly, Pacific Rim made $110 million alone in China, and $14 million in Japan, and Japan is not that big a market by the way to change anything.

Which means, even if I were to factor in China e.g. Godzilla 2014 does exceptionally well at $120 - $130 million and $15 million in Japan. Add this on to the $379 - $400 million that Godzilla 2014 might make eventually, it still comes up to a total of $530 - $570 million. Even so, it still wouldn't make as much as what Godzilla 1998 did when adjusted for inflation.

DESTROYAH-X - Thank you ever so much for providing the inflation ratios for the films! I was about to look into that very aspect until I read your post! Excellent detective work! :)

Destroyah-X-Thanks for breaking it down like that. We all clearly see that there are very mixed opinions about this film, but if this film were as perfect as some people make it out to be, it would be doing better than it is. Let's say this slowly folks....For the sequel, MORE GODZILLA! MORE GODZILLA=MORE MONEY! Hear that WB/Legendary? How about you, Gareth, wannabe Spielberg, Edwards? It will be an embarrassment if G98 makes more than this film. It's like a bad metaphor.
