Hey Daikaiju fans!

Well, with the reveal of the Mutos and all, a lot of Gfans are unhappy with the beasts' design! Why? Well, the most popular answer is that it looks uninspired and resembles too much of the Cloverfield Monster:

Huh, well I do see a similar look between these two. But, you know? this makes me wonder: What other monsters have an uninspired design?

Well, let's see...

Wow, a giant Pterodactyl. *yawn*

Really? An emo Mothra? Toho is running out of ideas, I swear!

A pile of sludge... wow....

....

Are you guys catching my drift here? Look, I know people have their opinions, and I totally respect that. But, when you say that you don't like the Muto because they look "uninspired", make sure you take a look at some of the monsters Toho has made.

The monsters above are some of the awesomest kaiju out there, yet they don't have this crazy, new, radical design. don't judge a book by it's cover guys.

Similarly, some people might claim that Angy is just a giant Ankylosaurus or that King Caesar is just a huge shisa / foo dog.

Although I guess I'd have preferred MUTO designs that stun me by not reminding me of anything I've ever seen before, I still think the designs we've seen so far look pretty sweet. Maybe that's because I'm a huge fan of Cloverfield, but hey.

I can't wait to see how the MUTO hooves look on the big screen. A hooved kaiju is pretty original, actually.

(Also, the 'Battra = emo Mothra' thing made me laugh.)

@Megaguirus

Finally, another Cloverfield fan on this site!

Yeah, I'm loving the designs of the Mutos. I can't wait to see their movements, abilities, and personalities! :)

Cloverfield is the movie that got me into the daikaiju genre, so it'll always have a special place in my heart. (That sounds cheesy, but it's true!)

Yes, I think it'll be cool to see how the 8-legged one moves with all those legs, especially. Should have some sweet attacks.

My problem isn't that I think the MUTO is uninspired. They could have made something that looked exactly like an old Toho monster and that wouldn't have bothered me in the slightest bit, or even a non-Toho monster.

No, my issue is that (aboslutely no offense to you guys), that I really don't like Cloverfield, so the fact that they strongly resemble each other annoys be a bit. I don't dislike the MONSTER from the movie as much as I just REALLY DON'T LIKE THE MOVIE, which is why I'm not having a fit about it or anything. Just hoping we'll see at least ONE other monster that doesn't look like the one we've already seen.

That said, I LOVE the MUTO design.

In all honesty, at least judging from that toy Muto image, I don't see that much of a resemblance between the Cloverfield monster and the Muto design, other than the general shape and possibly one or two features (such as the small pair of arms near the legs).

While we're listing "uninspired" monsters, let's not forget some of these...

Kumonga, a giant spider.

Manda, a Chinese dragon (or a snake, in Destroy All Monsters)

Gorosaurus, some kind of Therapod dinosaur

Gezora, a land-walking octopus/squid

and last but definitely least, Varan, a mutated Tuatara that can glide

Just to clarify, I actually have nothing against the Kaiju I just listed above (in fact, some of them I really like, such as Gorosaurus and Varan).

Isn't Kumonga usually criticized for being uninspired? I've never really heard anyone say anything good about it.

You know ... i dont get why people say they look the same .. well for me maybe  the only thing they look alike is the way they stand , thats all , for everything else MUTOS are looking great for me , in fact i like the detail (maybe its just me) that it looks a little bit HUMANOID , could science be playing with human DNA on this one?

You think those are uninspired?  You guys are forgetting that one time where all Toho did was just take a T. rex and stick Stegosaurus spines on it! :)

Very true and a good reminder. From the trailer, we were relieved to see that Goji is in good hands with Gareth. Besides one of our most beloved monsters is definitely uninspired:

Who cares what the muto's/kaiju's look like whether they are original classic kaiju's or just brand spanking new kaiju's/muto's, we should just be looking forward to an awesome monster flick. Jeez luis it's Godzilla for crying out loud and by the looks of the trailer, this movie should be one the best flicks of the year or it possibly could come down to the greatest Godzilla movie ever or monster movie ever. P.S. by looking at the trailer doesn't mean the movie will rock but all in all of this is just my opinion only, you will have yours and I'll have mine but I'm certainly sure that we can agree on is that this movie does look really awesome!!

I just hope this movie will be great, the trailer seems to reasure that but I can be wrong and I'm hoping I'm really wrong, which in end I feel right for feeling wrong. So who knows and who else should care?

Dinozilla0439

Indeed, it does look awesome.

Well, uninspired is definitely the word for it.  This is the first time I actually looked at them side by side, and the resemblance is even more noticeable.  Basically they took Clovy and changed his head and hands and feet, slapped a new coat of paint on him, and said he's brand new.  If they were going to take a design from another monster and slightly update it, they should have done it with a Toho monster, not another American film.  Of course, that's not said to bash the actual movie, as I'm sure it will turn out great.  I'm just disappointed we won't be watching Godzilla fight an updated design of an old foe.  Or if a new monster, a more original design.

@ThisMeintiel

So in other words, like I said: just the general shape.

Seriously, there's not much resemblance. It's like saying that the design of Manda is uninspired because it looks like one of King Ghidorah's heads (yeah, I know, Atragon came before Ghidorah, The Three-Headed Monster, but you get my point, right?).

And what would the difference be between basing the design off of that of an American monster like Cloverfield, and basing it off of a Toho monster (keep in mind that no Toho monster other than Godzilla himself is going to be in the movie, which means that they couldn't call the new monster by the name of whatever Toho monster they based its design off of and say its an updated design if they did so)? Unless it's a somewhat obscure Toho monster like Maguma or Dogora, it'll probably elicit more claims of being "uninspired".

Exactly, Angzilla. :)

@ Angzilla

Considering this is a Godzilla movie, based on an already existing franchise, I would expect monsters from said franchise.  It's just like saying Godzilla's look is uninspired because he's based on Godzilla.

And not much of a resemblance?  Really?  They have the same legs.  Muto just has hooves.  They have the same arms.  Muto just has claws, instead of hands.  They're bodies look extrememly similar, right down to the smaller arms above his waist.  The only thing that is HUGELY different is its head.  And before he evolves into the 4 armed monster, the resemblance is even closer.

I simply wanted to drop in to say I disagree with pretty much everything in this thread. I think every kaiju is very unique and genuine in its own way, that includes what we've seen of the Mutos so far. I've not seen or read one monster that is not highly inspired, original and fun, especially given the time frame some of them were created.
