“Shin-Gojira” & Release Date Revealed for Godzilla: Resurgence!

A poster revealing the head of the latest Godzilla incarnation has been released! The head of Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi's less handsome and more grotesque Godzilla has been released to fans and the result is unlike any to have come before it—Especially from Toho. Sources close to the material have confirmed this is the real deal.

The head resembles much of the concept work of the 1954 creature and the eye cutting downward resemble's how both the suit and puppet from the original film gazed at its victims. It's still unclear if this is a suit or puppet/animatronic, but there are clues that this may be the latter.

The poster's release date is the previously rumored July, 29th 2016-- Giving this movie ample post-production time leading to its release.

So what do you think of the King of the Monster's new look in Godzilla: Resurgence? Let us know below!

I like it. It's 'nightmarish' and creepy. The direction and suit acting will be the key: hopefully it will frighten and make the viewer uneasy. Hopefully the rest of the design is well-proportioned and powerful looking. But I don't think that will be a problem with Toho.

The eyes are a bit small, but they go with the overall look. And it is evocative of the 1954 Godzilla, with the eyes looking down at you.

This is fine work, design-wise.

He's Hideous! He's Horrifying! He's...beautiful! Godzilla has truly returned to his roots as a symbol of nuclear destruction. Though personally, I would have rather the head look a little more like the 1954 suit, but he is still awesome. I can't wait to see his entire design and to see a trailer (which may still be a while, but I can wait, good things come to those who wait.).

I feel the eyes are too small. Even 1954's was a little bit bigger. Not much but a little bit. It's kinda hard to tell if he's gazing at you if you can't see his eyes well, which is a problem I had with the Legendary Godzilla design, but whatever.

Agreed. I would like the eyes to be a little bit larger, to be a bit more expressive. But, I like this design, look, overall.

I don´t see the big deal with this design. It is just plain horrid. It does not look scary to me, for my taste looks goofy and cartoonish; those silly microscopic eyes plus the big jagged theet mouth looks like a mix between Critters and something from Adventure time!

I know they wanted to pay tribute the original concept from 1954, indeed it has something, but I don´t see a good effort here for a decent design. There are monster that could look scary, but yet quite impressive and good looking, like Destoroyah or the new Gamera.

They wanted to evoke something from the 1954 film... but I feel it is the low budget for the costumes that time...

I hope the plot is better than this look, because I am not feel so hyped now.

I think seeing the new Godzilla on screen is going to be unreal. I have a feeling he's gonna look absolutely terrifying.

"I think seeing the new Godzilla on screen is going to be unreal. I have a feeling he's gonna look absolutely terrifying."

Projecting just this view of the Shin Gojira design onto what the directors, especially Shinji Higuchi, have said about the film, I would agree with what Chris Picard said: it's going to be unreal and terrifying. I feel that this is not going to be a 'pet' Godzilla that makes Japan feel more secure by simply knowing he's sleeping offshore in the Japan Trench. It reminded me, right away, naturally, of the Shodai-Goji design. To me, the influence is apparent. And this is a good thing. Why not just use the 1954 design, as someone has asked? Because the series needs to be renewed, while, at the same time, honoring and drawing inspiration from its roots. Of course, more looks are needed, not to mention seeing this Godzilla in action in some footage, trailers and then, hopefully, the finished film. But, so far, I like this and as a result, have a great hope about the directors fulfilling their vision of Godzilla and delivering a nightmare-inducing, overwhelming monster which dominates a visually spectacular and narratively satisfying film.

Saints alive on Sunday! He looks like he has been burned! The olfactory canal and nasal duct are exposed, his eyes and eye sockets show what I believe to be clear signs of flash-heat vitiation, and his skin has quite obviously been exposed to tremendous thermal trauma! That monster is in a lot of pain if his nerves still function! I find this design to be highly compelling! :)

@Something Real: Yes! This is it! You nailed it. This Godzilla looks like he's been exposed a nuclear explosion. And, he does covey the look of a creature that is suffering. Because of this, even with the horror and destruction he causes, there will be some pathos, some pity toward a monster that is also a victim. He'll be scary, but understood, to some degree, as well. Seeing Godzilla this way gives some insight into what motivates him.

This Godzilla also looks like it's capable of doing horrible things, with intent. I feel that there is great opportunity here to experience him as a real, meaningful character and not just as a plot device. Hopefully, Anno and Higuchi are being allowed to pursue their vision unimpeded and without interference.

We may have a Godzilla film on our hands, the likes of which we have not seen before.

I like the suit concept, but i feel this is a bit much. Yes he is absolutely looks bone-chilling, but it looks too much like a living nightmare. Godzilla wasn't always the terrifying aspect of the films, but rather his rage toward mankind and his unimaginable strength and power. It was the fact that he was a large creature out for revenge that made the audience feel, "Oh crap, there's no hope for the people of the city." I have to admit, this design reminds me a lot of the original 1954 Godzilla suit. Maybe it's just me, I don't know, but I need another trailer to convince me that the director really did an amazing job of staying true to his terrifying on- screen and off-screen presence.

JAMAAL - Indeed! I certainly hope the Shin-Gojira is a step in a new direction for Godzilla films! :)

KAIJUFALL3 - Hahaha! Perhaps they are distant relations - thrice removed on Goji's mother's side. ;)

Well, now that we've gotten this out of the way, on to the rest of the design.

I hope it's powerful, with broad (enough) shoulders and prominent, but traditional dorsal fins. Shin-Goji should walk with purpose, as if driven by the rage he embodies. No sleepwalking like in Gojira 1984. And he should be unpredictable, cunning and of obvious intelligence.

Is it me, I know this guy directed Attack on Titan, but did you have to make Godzilla look like a Titan. If you look at him he has the extra long mouth going back. Look at the eyes, no eyelids! Google image the live action Titan movie and you will see the resemblance. I can see this as a stand alone Godzilla horror movie, not in a series where he fights other monsters. The trailer was not very convincing, it looked unfinished, just people looking back and screaming. I've been watching, reading books/comics of Godzilla since the seventies and collecting. I can see it, but I am not impress, I would like to see him look a little more realistic than this.

Shinji Higuchi, the special effects director, directed Attack on Titan. Hideaki Anno, the lead director, had nothing to do with it. I think the comparison people have been making between the too are coincidental or looking at something that's really not there.

The trailer is a teaser trailer. Toho's teaser trailers have never been very interesting, go back and look at some of the 1990s teasers which feature footage from previous movies or just the poster with flashes of text. Obviously they didn't want to do that this time to remove it from past films.

As for realism... boring.
