In celebration of Godzilla Minus One, opening in Japan November 1st, 2023, Shin Godzilla (2016) will get a special re-release. A black & white cut of the film, re-titled Shin Godzilla: ORTHOchromatic, will get a limited screening in Japan at the end of October.
Shin Godzilla is one of the top four films Godzilla Minus One director Takashi Yamazaki has picked for screenings leading up to his film. Special guest Hideaki Anno, director of Shin Godzilla, will also be in attendance for the October 27th screening in Japan. He previously picked Ghidorah: The Three Headed Monster (1964) since it was the first Godzilla film his father took him to see. He also picked the 1954 original.
Additionally, on October 13th, 2023, Yamazaki will have a special screening for his favorite Godzilla film, Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack (2001) with special guest Shusuke Kaneko in attendance.
"'Shin Godzilla: Orthochromatic' was proposed by Anno after receiving the offer to be a guest speaker. The production was made possible under the supervision of director Higuchi and associate director Katsuro Onoe. The title 'Orthochromatic' ('Ortho' for short) is a type of monochrome film wherein red colors are not exposed to light. It's characterized by a heavier face tone than the monochrome film currently in circulation (panchromatic) and this aesthetic is incorporated into the title."

Shin Godzilla: ORTHOchromatic will screen in Japanese theaters October 27th & 28th, 2023. There's no word on whether or not it will receive an overseas release.
In 2017, Shin Godzilla won seven Japanese Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director(s). It is the highest grossing Japanese Godzilla film and the 5th highest in attendance.
Set in a post-war Japan, Godzilla Minus One will once again show us a Godzilla that is a terrifying and overwhelming force. Japan, which had already been devastated by the war, faces a new threat with Godzilla, bringing the country from nothing (zero) into the ‘minus.’
Godzilla Minus One is directed by Takashi Yamazaki. An award winning filmmaker and avid Godzilla fan, his work on Always: Sunset on Third Street (2005) earned him two Japanese Academy Awards for Best Director and Best Screenwriter. He was honored with another Best Director and Best Screenplay nomination for the sequel, Always: Sunset on Third Street 2 (2007). In 2016, he won the Best Director category again for The Eternal Zero. Yamazaki also helmed highly acclaimed actioners, Returner, Space Battleship Yamato and many others.
He gave Godzilla a cameo during an opening dream sequence in Always: Sunset on Third Street 2. In 2021 he returned to Godzilla and directed footage for Seibuen Amusement Park's Godzilla the Ride: Giant Monster Battle Summit.
Godzilla Minus One opens in Japan on November 3rd, 2023, Godzilla Day.
It opens in the United States on December 1st, 2023.
