In a surprising twist, Netflix are officially out of the Warner Brothers deal, leaving Paramount the only contender left! What does this mean for the future of Godzilla in the west and Legendary's Monsterverse? As per the terms of their acquisition, Paramount will soon be the exclusive owner of the Monsterverse's distribution rights.

Paramount have aggressively been in a bidding war with Netflix for months for the acquisition of Warner Brothers and their persistence has finally paid off. But is this a good, or bad thing for the future of the Monsterverse?
Fans were initially concerned by Netflix's potential takeover of WB because it meant less films making it to the cinema and those that did make it to theaters, would have a significantly shorter run at the box office. For moviegoers who prefer the cinematic experience, this did not bode well – especially for movies like Godzilla that benefit from the scale and immersive experience movie theaters offer over home-streaming. For this reason, a Paramount victory might favor an emphasis on more theatrical Monsterverse releases.

Ultimately, Paramount will only own distribution rights, leaving production to Legendary and their partners like Apple TV. This also positions Paramount more aggressively in the market, but they're still the underdog. This means they'll likely be looking to capitalize on their newly acquired assets, which could also bode well for the future of the Monsterverse.
