NECA's Video Game Godzilla revealed at Toy Fair '15

NECA revealed their next Godzilla figure at the 2015 Toy Fair this past weekend. Based on the Nintendo Entertainment System game, Godzilla: Monster of Monsters!, Godzilla will join NECA's Video Game figure line with the likes of Batman ('89) and their very impressive Rambo figure. Video Game Godzilla should hit shelves this summer.

The figure is a repaint of the 1984 (or 1985) mold with larger spines to match the Godzilla sprite's sihloutte from the action game. The result has polarized fans.

While some seem to enjoy it based on its pixelated paint and nostalgia for the NES game, others feel the execution leaves something to be desired.

It's interesting NECA went with the '84 design for this figure when the box art features the 1954 Godzilla and the title screen features the 1964 design. (Known by fans as the Mosugoji.) Although the argument can be made that the figure is meant to resemble the in-game sprite it's curious NECA would bother with the orange eyes which are only visible on the title screen-- a screen which clearly features Godzilla's '64 appearance.

One wishes NECA had waited to get a '64 Godzilla out and create a more accurate redeco based on that. Even if they wanted to move forward with video game figure first their '54 mold not only looks closer to the game model, but is actually featured on the cover. In the end NECA said they repainted the three designs they had and decided the redeco worked best with the '84 design. The decision is puzzling considering the '84 Godzilla is arguably their most poorly received figure.

Ultimately the Video Game Godzilla seems like a great concept marred by some thoughtless execution. For fans hoping there will be further modifications to create a NES Godzilla closer to the game's likeness, you're out of luck. On Twitter NECA announced there will be no changes made to the figure.

What do you think of NECA's latest addition to their Video Game Figure line? Is it a respectful realization of the NES game's star? Should they have used another existing mold? Or should NECA have developed a 1964 figure first? Will you purchase it? Sound off!

Neca should have either made the 64 first or make a totally new sculpt for this. Either way I'm getting it.

I don't like it. It's just a way to make more money based off of a sculpt they already have. They should've made a new sculpt or at least one that's more accurate to the game.
