Apple TV was gracious enough to invite us to become part of their exclusive First Bite program, granting us special access to watch the first 2 episodes of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2 ahead of the February 27th release date. While I can't share any spoilers from the first two episodes, what I can say is, the first episode alone packs more heat than all of Season 1 combined. For those fans who were left feeling underwhelmed by the amount of Monster screen time in Season 1, rest assured Season 2 makes up for it, ten-fold! Visual effects for Titan dynamics like Kong's movements are also massively improved, very reminiscent of Michael Dougherty's visuals in King of the Monsters. Size and scale are back in frame for the Monsterverse after a significant departure in the last Godzilla x Kong movie.
In addition to a significantly improved visual experience, the story also feels a lot more balanced and pacing feels more natural. I was engaged nonstop throughout both first 2 episodes, something I can't say I experienced with Season 1. Character dialogue contains some subtle nods to a variety of other popular sci-fi blockbusters outside of the Monsterverse as well – you can tell writer Chris Black and director Lawrence Trilling of episode 1 and Dan Dworkin, writer for episode 2 really wanted to pay homage to some of Hollywood's sci-fi heavyweights and I think they were tastefully implemented.
All in all, fans of Godzilla, Kong and all things Monsterverse are in for a serious treat with Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2. This new season is an upgrade in every way, giving fans more of what they asked for and less of what they didn't. You won't want to miss the first episode when it airs February 27th on Apple TV and the second episode when it airs March 6th.
