Dave Callaham has been tapped by Legendary to pen a script for a Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire sequel! Legendary have also expressed interest in having Godzilla x Kong director Adam Wingard return again to conclude a Godzilla/Kong trilogy but official word on a director choice has yet to he announced. Adam Wingard himself has expressed interest in a trilogy as well, previously alluding that the next Godzilla/Kong crossover film would focus more heavily on Godzilla's story arc rather than Kong's and would draw inspiration from one of Godzilla's most iconic films - Godzilla vs. Destoroyah.
As The Hollywood Reporter points out:
The hiring comes in the wake of the box office success of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, which has grossed close to $555 million worldwide. That is the biggest haul since 2017’s Kong: Skull Island, which peaked at $568 million. Empire, which is still in theaters, may also be one of the most profitable (if not the single most profitable) of the five movies in the series, as it only cost $135 million, per sources. Thus Legendary is keen to keep the monster juice flowing.
Dave Callaham previously had penned one of the early drafts of Gareth Edwards' Godzilla (2014) so he's no stranger to the Monsterverse. With an emphasis on Godzilla's story arc this might indicate a return to form, bringing the Monsterverse back to its more serious, darker roots - especially if the next instalment is to be influenced by a film like Godzilla vs. Destoroyah.
As news continues to develop on the next Monsterverse movie, we'll keep you posted!
