Godzilla x Kong sequel: Adam Wingard will NOT direct the next Godzilla / Kong Monsterverse movie!

In a surprise update it has now been announced that Adam Wingard, the man who directed both Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire will NOT be returning to conclude his trilogy, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The parting of ways is described as amicable and stemming from timing issues. The door remains open for a future return, per insiders.

Wingard is coming off directing and co-writing Godzilla x Kong: New Empire, which has grossed over $564 million worldwide since its March 29 domestic opening. Wingard, who didn’t have a deal for any new installment, said he had more stories to tell during the press tour but also unveiled a new original feature project that he wanted to tackle before another monster movie. That project, an action thriller titled Onslaught, was picked up in a competitive sale by A24 and is prepping for a fall shoot. -THR

Originally, Wingard was eager to conclude the Godzilla / Kong saga with one more film, focusing more on Godzilla's story this time around and previously alluding to drawing inspiration from the Toho film Godzilla vs. Destoroyah.

A Godzilla x Kong sequel is already in the works at Legendary, with Dave Callaham penning the script right now. Legendary are eager to move quickly in producing the next film while interest is high for the Monsterverse - unfortunately their timeline and Wingard's schedule just don't line up.

Nevertheless, the series will continue and we can only hope the next director they choose handles the franchise with as much care and consideration as the franchise's previous directors.
