Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire arrives in theaters next week and fans everywhere are eager to see Adam Wingard's sequel to his previous Monsterverse entry Godzilla vs. Kong. But while talks of a follow-up to GxK might seem like jumping the gun this early, Wingard is already eagerly planning the next Monsterverse installment!
During an interview with DiscussingFilm, Wingard expressed how he wants a Godzilla / Kong trilogy and how he has a lot more of this story to tell:
The whole idea that if you’ve done two movies, like, maybe you should just go ahead and do a third because, as you said, there’s a trilogy in there. I definitely think there’s more story to this, and I think that I have more story to tell. But it just depends on how [Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire] does and how things kind of shape out. I know that sounds like a bullshit diplomatic answer (laughs). But the truth is, If I’m going to be completely honest with you, I do have more story to tell with these monsters and I know where I’d go with it. I would be very excited to be able to come back on for another one if things worked out!
Sounds like Wingard is eagerly waiting to see how Godzilla x Kong performs, hoping Warner Brothers and Legendary green-light another collaboration between the franchise's two titular Titans. Time will tell if Wingard gets his opportunity to turn his Godzilla / Kong story into a trilogy!
