Nearly an hour's worth of footage was cut from Godzilla 2: King of the Monsters and none of it was included in any of the film's bonus content when it came time for home release – even though it was supposed to have been... What did this bonus content include? Why was it abruptly removed from the home entertainment released? Will Warner Brothers and Legendary ever release it? Director of Godzilla: KOTM Michael Dougherty recently took part in a Reddit AMA with actor Quinn Lord to chat with fans about their 2007 film TRICK R' TREAT and inevitably, questions about Godzilla came up.
Answering fan questions about any deleted scenes, Dougherty revealed the following:
There aren’t any current plans for a KOTM director or special edition, but we had to cut about 30-40 minutes of scenes that would be fun to see restored one day. They were initially supposed to appear as bonus features on the home video release but got yanked for reasons above my pay grade.
He also touched on his personal theory about how Titans use radiation to reset and heal environments on Earth in the Monsterverse:
As for titan radiation healing the environment, I think a lot of people forget that there are many different kinds of radiation and not all of them are negative or destructive. For instance, sunlight is a form of nourishing radiation (composed of ultra violet, infrared, etc) that obviously creates and sustains life on our planet, and in my mind, that’s the kind of radiation the Titans might emit in order to restore certain ecosystems.
The runtime for Godzilla: KOTM after all the cuts is 2 hours and 12 minutes long. A director's cut could have easily pushed past 3 hours! It's curious to note that the deleted footage was initially intended to be included in the home entertainment release but was taken out abruptly. Unfortunately the reasons why the footage was pulled remains a mystery and we may never find out.
