While I feel like having Godzilla and Kong team up against another monster is a little bit of a cop out, I don't think it's a bad or stupid idea if done well. Everyone is pointing to Batman v. Superman as a reason to not do that, but quickly forget that in Ghidorah: The Three Headed Monster Godzilla and Rodan fought throughout the entire movie before teaming up to fight King Ghidorah.

It just seems like the most likely route to avoid fan backlash from claiming a clear-cut winner. And, like I said, both Kong and Godzilla are being portrayed as the protagonists of their respective, solo movies. Setting up two established "heroes" against each other usually ends with some sort of cop out.

Slightly relevant--Here's a fan made timeline of the MonsterVerse. Personally, I don't think it's going to make it past Godzilla vs. Kong anymore. But I suppose it's fun to dream:

Did anybody else see the released design of the actual Godzilla for this???? He is so large! Those mountains range from 1000 to 2000 meters in height! So this, by far, is the largest Godzilla we ever gotten. 

Not to mention, he looks like a combination between Shin, 2014 and Millenium Godzilla.

Holy crap wow! Just Wow! That is so freaking cool that a Godzilla film won best picture (well maybe not for the actual oscars, but still :P )! Funny thing, I didn't even know that was a thing and I am just so happy! XD

Alrighty then, well I honestly can't wait to see what happens also. And yeah, to be fair, Kong's not gonna get that much at the box office considering the early reviews already and just by their change in tone with the recent spots and trailer, they're kinda trying too much to be like the MCU. I honestly hope that Michael Doughtery doesn't fuck it up like he did with Krampus, cause that had some mix reviews. I really like the idea they're going for with this surrounding Monarch and other monsters, it's really cool. 

Now ow with my ideas, those were just some thoughts thrown out there of what they could possibly do. Gamer and Godzilla together, yeah, American wise it wouldn't work well considering the majority of America doesn't have a clue who Gamera is, but it's worth a shot. Gigan they could work very cleverly into this and with Mecha-Godzilla or somethin like the Jaegers, I don't see that happening at all now. Now, with the idea of Kong and Godzilla teaming up together, THAT'S STUPID. I don't want I to be like BVS where they only fight for 8 min. and then team up all of a sudden. To me what it looks like so far, I hope that Godzilla and Kong will be some form of enemies considering that the monsters are now being portrayed as once rulers and the dominant species I earth.

Now with Cthulhu, yeah, he should get his own film.

Oooh I can't wait to see what Legendary King Ghidorah will look like! He should get his own movie!

I think your theory will come down to which monster makes more at the box office. As it stands, Skull Island isn't looking like it will make what Godzilla did. (Or even be much of a success at all.) So continuing the series with a set of "Kong vs..." movies wouldn't make a lot of financial sense.

Additionally, I highly doubt there will be a clear cut winner in the upcoming Godzilla vs. Kong. (Assuming it still gets made.) With both Godzilla and Kong being treated as pseudo-protagonists in their standalone films, there's currently no established antagonist between the two. My money is on them teaming up against another monster.

Say what? How is it any weirder? And giant humanoids/humanoid robots aren't a, "weird Japanese thing"? Pacific Rim and Transformers are directly inspired and taken from Japanese sources that popularized the concept of giant humanoids/humanoid robots:

highly doubt it Krakenbane, highly doubt it. I think it would be more than likely that the Legendary Godzilla will not feature Mechagodzilla but instead something similar to the Jaegers from Pacific Rim because come on Americans perfer a giant humanoid to fight something inhuman. The mechagodzilla is more of a weird Japanese thing.

I wouldn't be surprised if the emphasis shifted to a "Kong versus *-*" series of movies, with the titular ape gaining the title KING after having bested Godzilla.

Yes, the director certainly succeeded in leaving me bewildered and disturbed! As cool as this movie was, I'm afraid a Shin sequel would be little more than a saurian version of "Attack on Titan", which this little monster hunter could live without, thank you. Er, domo!

This kind of critical acclaim is great not only for Shin Godzilla, but for the Series and the Genre. And it certainly deserves it. Shin Godzilla is among my five Godzilla films, easily. As great as the VFX and design are, it's the narrative and the human characters that make this film so dear to me, like GMK, like Gojira.  

This recognition for Shin Godzilla is very satisfying. The whole ride, from announcement at the end of 2014, to the naming of the directors, to the reports about the staffing, to the design leaks, to the trailers, the premiere and that phenomenal theatrical run, including here in North America, it's been a great ride, for which I am thankful. 

I think he means the pressure is just on for the crew of the anime to turn out a really great movie as well. No doubt it will have an easier time making bank though since animated films tend to do better in Japan.

I wouldn't worry about the anime Godzilla film. Anime is the biggest thing in Japan. If films like "Your name" and "One piece gold" can have the success they've had, chances are, the anime Godzilla will be the same. Although Shin Godzilla did better than one piece, but still.

I'm so glad this film is getting what it deserves. In my opinion it is the best Godzilla film since gmk and the 54 original and probably the best Kaiju film since Gamera 3. 

 Always great to see Godzilla get awards.

Must kinda suck to be the animated Godzilla movie following up on this.

Congrats to Hideaki Anno-San & Crew for showing what movies of this caliber can really show people! Happy the Japan Blu Ray Release is on mai 25th Birthday ^_^

Not officially, but it likely will be soon. I wouldn't expect that price to drop anytime in the near future. If at all. With these films, it's always better to take the financial hit if you want them before they go out the door for good.

Hi there! I have a quick question if anyone can answer it. Is Godzilla Vs Biollante on Blu-ray OOP? I'm wondering if i should pick it up while it's still $37 or wait for the price to drop.

Man, King of the Monsters nailed it with spotting what looks like two little people beneath Mothra... Did not see that the first time.

I'm relieved to see Mothra being presented as divine in some capacity. And I can't help but notice the two figures underneath her in the picture...

I like that they're shown in cave paintings. This could mean that the 4 monsters have fought in the past in the continuity of the Legendary universe. 

Even though these aren't very high quality, I'm digging it!

The biggest thing is price. You're looking at $90 for the 4K version, including shipping.

Damn.. if that wasn't the most intense action for a kaiju movie.. it looks like warner bros and legendary finally listened to fans.. and I'm betting Godzilla KOM is going to kick some serious @$$.

I watched shin godzilla a few months back, and look at it, the face! the teeth! it's so scary! Godzilla 2014 looks better and has better CGI and special effects, but shin godzilla is much more powerful. Personally, I like 2014 godzilla way better, but I can't give this fight to 2014 godzilla, because the purple atomic breath? that would wreck 2014 easily! Shin is more like a god or the devil, because even in its regular stage, it looks like its made of dried lava with that red glow! Shin godzilla is basically the devil, because look at that face and tell me it looks friendly, like the 2014 version. When I watched the 2014 godzilla, I was never scared, but shin godzilla gave me nightmares. 2014 godzilla is still possible to kill, but shin godzilla is basically impossible to kill. The only reason shin zilla isn't agile fast or in a position to move is its basically indestructible. That face though, looks like that plant creature Biollante. The 2014 godzilla is still a living creature, but the Shin is on a completly different level. 2014 godzilla is like t rex in JW, but Shin godzilla is like I rex!
