I can believe that.

Many monsters go through a multitude of design phases before the final one is ultimately decided on.

Feel free to doubt me, I don't blame you since I can't provide proof, but one of my colleagues on Wikizilla did some digging and managed to get some information from a guy who has a Legendary contact, which he says he verified independently. The guy says that the design was almost definitely an official concept done for the film by ADI, but is extremely different from what he has been shown and told to be the final design.

Again, completely understandable if you don't believe me, I'm merely passing on what I've been told. But for the record I completely trust the individual who told me this.

I think the whole realism argument can be brought down to one simple idea. Make the monsters seem plausible, without sacrificing the fantastic and/or mystical elements. Mothra can still be Mothra, but the Monsterverse version might incorporate design elements that are pulled from the natural world without sacrificing what Mothra has always looked like. Godzilla for example, the 2014 design is still Godzilla, but it added some design elements to make the creature appear plausible. Large feet like an elephant to support its weight, visible gills to breath underwater etc.

That's why the whole realism argument is dumb to me, especially on this design. It's always been about plausibility without the sacrifice of the fantastic. This design totally throws out what was fantastic about Ghidorah and it's not remotely plausible.

^Pretty much echos my thoughts word-for-word, blow-for-blow. Realism should come secondary to honoring what's come before and everything the above image represents is in conflict with the things that Godzilla '14 and Skull Island did do well.

It's getting to the point where anyone who uses the word "realism" unironically, pertaining to this franchise, loses credibility for me.

I've been really flattered to see the amount of referrals the GNP site is getting from this page, and I thank all of you!  Hopefully you've enjoyed what you've read so far!

I have a new prologue up now for the 1974 classic Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla!  Its a short one, but hopefully it sets the stage for the 70's insanity to come!

Check it out here!

This "realism" nonsense is ridiculously overblown by the fandom. Edwards stated his vision was "what if this stuff really happened?" not "what if this stuff was realistic?" And Edwards' vision doesn't represent Legendary's, especially since he's no longer working on the MonsterVerse. Giant monsters, especially three headed dragons, will never be realistic in any sense of the word. If Legendary wanted to make the monsters "realistic" then Godzilla would have been a ten foot tall dinosaur in G14. But instead they made him recognizable as the character he always has been, a giant bipedal reptilian creature that breathes atomic fire and withstands conventional weaponry. Trying to make "realistic" versions of these monsters would defeat the entire purpose of making these films.

Kong: Skull Island showed that there is very little regard for "realism" in the series going forward. Isolated undiscovered island where the Hollow Earth is real and animals are giant and have plant DNA. It disregards all science for the sake of compelling entertainment. Legendary's "vision" is making the universe grounded, they want to present this stuff as if it was happening in the real world and show how people would react to it. They already have the advantage of modern Hollywood effects to realize these monsters, it would be a complete waste to make them completely unrecognizable in the name of false "realism." That doesn't mean they can't change the monsters' designs, they clearly did so with Godzilla, but neither does it mean they should completely redesign the monsters to the point they are unrecognizable. As we all should have learned from a certain film from 1998, not that I like having to keep bringing it up.

Let's all remember that even though this may in fact be a Ghidorah design, it could be any Ghidorah design. Remember how many design changes Godzilla went through before they landed on the 2014 look?

Like, good lord. Can you imagine the backlash if this exact scenario happened while G2014 was in production, only this was the design that was on the screen?

If they make this Ghidorah anything close to that design then im out. Ghidorah needs to be big and bulky. If he doesn't then the big 3 are gonna whip him around like a rag doll.

Well I cant really take this opinion to heart. Im sure with the actors in this movie cant be all that bland. I don't believe it. But the assurance of great monster fighting is a sigh of relief. K:SI had way better action and fighting than 2014 so im happy so far.

I just feel fans are being to uptight, you have to let them make their own design. Not everything is going to look like it did, and why should it? I want to see a new Ghidorah, not the old one with remastered graphics.

Honestly this is probably Ghidorah's look, or an early look or him in the film. To be honest I don't hate it, it looks thin but then again Ghidorah is massive so what seems thin here may not look thin in the actual film.

True Gman but it just seems pointless at this point a year away for them to outwardly lie about this design, when if it is the real one we're going to see it probably this year. I highly doubt it is real.

And no, I'm not going to get over something that has been stated as being a crucial part of the Legendary monster series. They are striving to make the monsters look as realistic as possible--and although a wyvern-esque Ghidorah doesn't look right, to them it makes more sense than a behemoth on two legs being able to miraculously fly.

You also equally have to see the character model in action to truly know if it looks good or not. Judging the design by the 3D model's posing can't be done, if we go to that level Godzilla can look too big--or too thin, as for all the others.

I hope that it's not a cover up, although I immediately thought there was something fishy about their statement, because that design sucks. For any monster.

So 2 full seconds of the video show a blurry design on a computer that they say isn’t what we think it is but they still delete the video? Why? Even if it’s not the final design I’m pretty sure it’s something to do with ghidorah. Also a 10 year old scrapped design that has all the trademarks of ghidorah is being used as a background while they are confirmed to be working on KOTM? I don’t believe that.

I have to agree with Gman. It's just a poor look and it seems like we're watching a botched clean up operation because it leaked.

NateZilla10000,
I don't think I've come across any fan art I like of the monster. So it's impressive that the above looks worse than any fan material I've seen.

Emperor GorillaGodzilla,
Once again, there is NO pretext or real life comparison that a wing walking giant three headed monster is more "realistic"--Which is something these movies need to stray from anyway. Get over it.

"why would they lie to people?"

You mean like how the 1998 Godzilla design leaked and Tristar denied it was real, but they turned out to be the real deal? Or when J.J. Abrams told everyone Khan wasn't in Star Trek Into Darkness? Or when the writers of Game of Thrones told everyone a character was dead and not coming back and then he came back for the following season?

As much as I want to believe ADI, believing them up front and asking "why would they lie" is utter naivety.

Although I find there explanation suspect, I hope it's the case. Hideous design, whatever it's suppose to be.

As much as I hope this isn't the real King Ghidorah design, I'm a little skeptical of ADI's explanation. There is a project called Lucifer they worked on about a decade ago that features a multi-headed dragon, but that dragon had four heads, four wings, and one tail, while the "leaked" design clearly has three heads, two wings, and two tails, all traits of King Ghidorah. Plus what are the odds that they happen to have a modified design from a defunct project from ten years ago onscreen in 2018, and be a company working on Godzilla: King of the Monsters? In the video, someone even frantically goes over to the computer and gets the design off the screen, as if knowing it wasn't supposed to be shown. Then to top it all off, ADI took down the video after they posted the comment claiming it wasn't King Ghidorah.

I am not a fan of the design and would be very happy if it wasn't real, but right now the whole thing stinks of someone at ADI screwing up and accidentally leaking the design, and the company realizing it and quickly trying to cover it up.

Ghidorah can't be expected to be a behemoth walking on two legs and flying. This is what should be expected tbh from a realistic interpretation but still, I doubt this is the official and final design. Especially if the company said it is not, why would they lie to people?

@Gman

Out of complete curiosity, have you ever seen a fan made Ghidorah that you liked overall?

Don't get me wrong; nothing against you for not liking the ones you don't like. I'm just curious on what you would consider a good redesign.

True, hope to get a look at them sometime later this year. I just hope they do a Kong style marketing where you actually see the monster instead of literally not showing us them at all, like the G 14 marketing. Although by the amount of screen time people are saying the monsters get, we should get to see a fair bit in the trailers/promotional work.

Real or not, it's putrid--Likely the worst interpretation of the character I've seen including some bad fan art floating around.

I'm skeptical it's the real deal, or anything close to it, but either way it's pretty goofy.

Good to here, I'm not saying that we don't need a good story and characters, but I'm not going to be upset if we don't. The Reddit post kept on mentioning that G's design is basically the same but there's "more red". Wonder what that means?

Reply

While this may certainly be a Ghidorah design (I mean, why else take down the original video unless it's something to hide?), I doubt this is the final design. It's just too early; we're literally a year from release. That's another good 1-2 months to crank out the final designs before entering animation for another 3-4 months. Then you got the last 2-3 for the compositing and final edit. Meanwhile, all the finished shots are used for marketing.

I also might add that it doesn't match the cave painting in Skull Island. Granted those were up to artist interpretation, but they seemed to get Godzilla right, so why would Ghidorah be so different?

Only the early screening attendants would truly know.

And they're legally sworn to not tell us, so that's a dead end.

I get it, it's supposed to look "regal" ala "King" Ghidorah. The design just doesn't look right...I hope it's not the final look. I'd have to actually see it in motion before definitively passing judgement, but right now, it's a no for me.

I already said it in the other post, but I'll say again:

This is coming from a dude who thinks that all a Godzilla movie is good for, and I quote: "just fast forward past anything with a human."

I doubt this is a credible source to take seriously.
