I might as well keep things up.

I Tweeted Mike Dougherty and D Man1954 recently about the "pro wrestling/boxing" idea, so I started wondering how else I could spread the message.

What we need are some good influential social media outlets to garner further interest in the film. Maybe start a hashtag brand, perhaps get some media polls and whatnot.

Stuff like this that can help get people aware of and interested in the film's primary draw, Godzilla and Kong. Perhaps the marketing could have a contest or something like on this site between Godzilla and Kong based on social media platforms. The winning team could determine which of the 2 Titans could get something like a particular character focus poster or something becoming the dominant poster, stuff like that.

Encourage a rivalry within the potential audiences, basically.

Kong has always been portrayed as the more sympathetic character. He is more "human" and relatable to than Godzilla. Besides that, the underdog always wins. It will most likely be a reskinned Rocky film.

GojiGojiGodzilla ForumWhat Made You a Godzilla Fan?

Back when I was really really little, I'm talking like 2-3 years old, I saw Ghidorah: The Three-headed Monster on an old tape with my dad, and I was instantly in love. The action-packed fights and charming cheesiness and fascinating (at the time for me at least.) special effects of it all just completely drew me in and made me want to see them all. This sums it up perfectly. And from then until I was around 10, I saw pretty much every Showa Era movie from Toho, the films that my dad grew up seeing when he was my age. Tapes and DVD's from my local library, Netflix's old online-delivery service, thrift stores, and the old Blockbuster and other independent video store from my home town were my supply, and I had almost as much fun hunting them down as I did seeing them. Though unfortunately, by the time I was around 11, I had mostly moved on to other interests, and didn't pay Godzilla and his pals much attention anymore. Kinda makes me sad thinking about, once I got to that age I almost felt a bit embarrassed for liking Kaiju movies, I felt like it made me nerdy and I kinda abandoned it. But that all changed back when I finally watched the 2014 Godzilla with some friends back in May. It made me remember how I felt back when I was younger, watching in awe at these massive monsters battling each other. It felt really good, and helped me fall back in love like I am now. I'm only just now getting back into the game, this summer I've made a goal to watch every Godzilla film there is, I've gotten up to All Monsters Attack, and it's really brought back some great memories, and I'm really looking forward to catching up on the newer films, even if it seems like some are better than others, (1998). It's been great, and now I've just joined this forum to help with that, so hey, it's really awesome to be here, and thanks for reading I suppose.

I feel like a draw would be too obvious and ruin the purpose of the movie, the fight between two massive monsters. One has to win. No one should die but I still want one to lose. It should be Kong. He does not need or want to be the king of the monsters. He wants his island and that’s all.

hawk4117,
Narratively it makes sense because Godzilla was the larger threat in the movie. Kong was more of an anti-hero. Also consider that Kong had nearly 30 years of popularity at the time and Honda and Tsuburaya were likely paying respect to a creature that helped inspired them to create Godzilla in 1954. Whether we like it or not, Kong was the winner--According to Toho back during the film's international release anyway.

Xenotaris,
He escaped the raft being tugged by the boat and swam to Japan early in the film. After he was drugged in Tokyo, Kong was airlifted to fight Godzilla at Mt. Fuji.

Airlifted, I though Kong was brought to Japan by a huge ass boat?

The RealistGodzilla vs. Kong (2020) ForumKong better not win! Here's my storyline. Whats yours?

Kong was airlifted to Godzilla with the intent of stopping Godzilla from remaining on land as a destructive force. When the movie ended Godzilla was gone and therefore Kong's human enforced objective was complete. That implies victory imo.

It just doesn’t make any sense how anyone could see Kong a winner.  Even the writers of that article.   I mean take another peek at the ending scene when the two were fighting hard, and that mansion was between them.  I think they both did more damage on that house than each other.  Then they got tangled up in a monster clinch and both rolled down the mountainside.  So what if Kong surfaced and swam away.  How could that scene claim Kong the victor?  It wasn’t like Kong was getting massive hard licks in of the final round as in Cinderella man where James Braddock was punching Maxx Baer all over the place. Yes Braddock was the underdog, as Kong would be, but come on…I could humbly say that if it went to a decision, it would be a draw. Anyways, I would just love to see a great fight and I hope the writers and producers can get the storyline right.

Another angle I was thinking would be beneficial would be a historical angle.

I was told recently that Godzilla: King of the Monsters may have suffered somewhat from the "Justice League effect", whereby it introduced a lot of new characters all at once.

While we don't have to worry about that, technically speaking, with Godzilla and Kong, it may be a good idea to have some parts of the marketing focused around bringing viewers up to speed on the events and characters leading up to the movie. Character pieces that delve into the creation and personalities behind Godzilla and Kong may be beneficial to getting watchers more invested in them beyond the spectacle.

Perhaps have the actors and production staff come on to talk about Godzilla and Kong as characters in interviews that are made widely available on the internet.

Any other ideas you guys have?

Gomi: Ninja MonsterGodzilla ForumAn Idea on how to Include Battra in the Monsterverse

Well Mothra's 2019 larval design strayed pretty far from the classical facial structure, so I'd imagine to sell the illusion that they are both Mothra Battra's larval design would keep the differences to a minimum, at least at first. Maybe they could grow over time as he matures, as most insects aren't particularly sexually dimorphic in the early stages. That way the diverging character traits get an extra visual layer to track his metamorphosis into Mothra's opposite.

UPDATE 7/01/19:
It came as a surprise to everyone that Godzilla: King of the Monsters held on to the #5 spot in its 5th weekend. The movie brought in $713,000 USD for the weekend--Which is higher than the predicted $600,000 estimation.

King of the Monsters' total now comes to $24.3M USD. Its attendance is now at 1.80 million--About 200,000 away from Godzilla 2000's final take from 1999.

Should it hold in a similar fashion to the way it did this week, it should be able to hit $30 million by August.

5th Weekend Comparison:
Godzilla 2014: $27.9M - Attendance: 1.99M
Shin Godzilla: $51.7M - Attendance: 3.63M
Godzilla: King of the Monsters: $24.3M - Attendance: 1.80M

well Battra being male should retain in his larval form his horn and tusks

I feel this idea has come up somewhere before, but what if the mystery egg from the credits has twin larvae in it, and one of them eventually turns out to be Battra? Like they start out almost identical aside from some defining color patterns(think the Raptors in JW), but one keeps being Mothra-like and the other starts getting increasingly aggressive and confrontational until they finally cocoon and pop out very different-looking. Then we find out the mean one is the once-in-a-millenium male of the species called Battra, whose purpose is to stake out and reinforce the lineage's territory by wiping out any potential competitors or threats, and the humans just happen to be in the crosshairs. That could be a neat way to let Mothra have twins in the MonsterVerse, and give Battra a useful, if misguided motivation.

That's the idea. that mothra and battra are brother and sister

Perhaps Battra is the male member of Mothra's species in the Monsterverse?

My idea for battra laying his egg is that he effectively gives up all his energy in order to create an egg. So while the new battra is created old one dies. But I like your idea too

Zilla, the 1998 one. I really love his design and abilities. He could be really cool like he was in the Rulers of earth comic. People hate him but he has already been determined to be a different monster from Godzilla. I just want to see him get some love on the big screen again. Hopefully it rids the hate on him.

YeOldFossilGodzilla ForumAn Idea on how to Include Battra in the Monsterverse

That’s a good idea, but one major problem with it. Battra is male so he can’t leave any offspring like Mothra. Why not have Battra be a member of another species that evolved around the same time as Mothra’s. There are many species on earth that evolved separately but by chance the same way as another.

Battra and Mothra could have had a symbiotic relationship that later changed into a competitive one after some huge environmental change. Or they could have always been in competition.  I do like the idea that the two species could possibly, and have rarely, mate and produce offspring. Then we could have Mothra Leo be the cross with all the best genes of both. This would be an extremely rare occurrence though considering that mothra’s species are asexual.

I do think Battra’s species should have male and female members because that would mean at least one has an instinct and knowledge of mating.

A Battra egg should have sensed Mothra’s awakening and hatched in response to it. Then we let them fight.

well godzilla won twice in his respective monsterverse movies but we will see what happens in 2020. Also on the whole "alternate endings" of King Kong vs Godzilla (1962) yeah King Kong won in both versions. Just in the Japanese one: Godzilla could be heard roaring after Kong left Japan.

The RealistGodzilla vs. Kong (2020) ForumKong better not win! Here's my storyline. Whats yours?

The rumored 1962 Japanese version with Godzilla surfacing at the end does not exist.

As for the winner in 2020 it will be Kong. It sucks imo because we already saw Kong win once and it feels really cheap seeing him win again.

Neither will die, but I think Godzilla will retreat and Kong will stand victorious on Skull Island.

I just want lots of Rodan, Methuselah, and equal amounts of human and monster action. Which Micheal Dougherty executed perfectly.

I still want more Mothra but perhaps we may be getting a mecha Ghidorah too. Also I really like the new Behemoth but being on an island, maybe a Kamoeba would be more appropriate.

So, to continue the trend of continuing the boxing rivalry angle, I was thinking that perhaps instead of having regular trailers, you could have Kong focused and Godzilla focused trailers.

We could have fewer overall TV spots and trailers, but they could be released in pairs, one for Godzilla and one for Kong. Once again, this would hopefully drive home the point of this being a major film rivalry and attract audiences to root for one Titan or the other.

Other things you could do this for include opposing posters, signs, and maybe even actors that are always paired up against each other. I don't think a rivalry like this has ever really been done in Hollywood before, and I think it'd be a good angle to approach the marketing from.

patty_bGodzilla ForumWhat Made You a Godzilla Fan?

I was a little kid, about 4 y.o at home often because I was sick much of the time. They showed a bunch of old monster movies in the afternoons and Godzilla was on a lot. I have to admit that Mothra and Son of Godzilla were my favourites until I got a bit older (Godzilla kind of scared me at that age). But when I did, I began to appreciate and eventually fell in monster-love with Godzilla. 40 something years later and he's still my favourite movie star.

I love those ideas especially the boxing match. These are the two most iconic monsters in the monsterverse so they should be given an "epic battle" type promotion. Ideally a fast food chain would also do some promoting (maybe kids toys too?) and the movie concessions would do what they did in China (I think it was China!) with Godzilla KotM and have the soda/popcorn containers promoting the film too. If this is the last one of the series, go out with a bang!
