MemberTitanosaurusJun-28-2019 9:21 AMBy this point in time, it's become well-known that Godzilla: King of the Monsters isn't performing too great at the box office. This thread isn't about that.
Instead, it's about coming up with ideas to help avoid this. The current release date is a good start, only facing real competition in the form of Disney's upcoming Onward and Mulan. It's also the only action-genre film releasing within its time frame, has 2 whole weeks to itself without any new releases, and is releasing at the start of Spring Break. Overall, this is a pretty good start.
The next step is figuring out how to draw in audiences, both hardcore fans and casual moviegoers, in terms of marketing.
Some of my ideas include the following:
Market the film like a wrestling match
Unlike the previous film, the upcoming Godzilla vs. Kong doesn't have to introduce as many new characters and give them backgrounds. We have Madison, Mark Russel, Ilene Chen, and presumably other MONARCH characters returning, as well as established Titans with Godzilla and Kong who we've now seen in action.
With all this in mind, the focus of the marketing can be on choosing which Titan to root for, since it's a straight rivalry between Godzilla and Kong. I think emphasizing this aspect will help to draw in audiences who can get behind a "who will win?" angle, especially since both are good monsters that can both be argued for.

Bring potential viewers up to speed
As mentioned before, not as many new characters have to be introduced and given proper background. However, that doesn't mean we can just not remind audiences about them. Just because watchers can watch the previous films doesn't mean they will.
Therefore, I think it's important to have featurettes released online on various platforms (and not confined to MONARCH Sciences' viral marketing website) that bring people up to speed on everything leading up to the film. The basic events of the previous 3 films, what each of the characters are all about, and most importantly of all, the characters of Godzilla and Kong.
It's clear now that the mere draw of giant monsters isn't enough for the general moviegoing audience. It's time to really focus on the characters of Godzilla and Kong. I think establishing these 2 as actual characters and not just part of the spectacle setpieces will help to draw in people, especially with regards to the "professional wrestling match" idea I put forth earlier.

So these are my ideas so far. I'd love to hear what else you guys can come up with, and generally discuss how we can help make the film succeed. I'm thinking of bringing these ideas to the attention of Adam Wingard, Michael Dougherty, etc., so that perhaps they can pass this on to the marketing team.
